A shocking defeat in the first round of the Wimbledon event had Maria Sharapova crash out of the competition in just the first round.
Sharapova, who was the tournament champion back in 2004 had faced off against Vitalia Diatchenko in a game which saw her out of the tournament.
It was Sharapova’s first game at Wimbledon since 2015, and she came in with a perfect 13-0 record.
Unfortunately, though she was just a game away from a victorious triumph, she ended up defeated in a three-hour game which finished with a 6-7 7-6 6-4 score line.
Addressing newsmen in a conference after her defeat, Sharapova noted that she had several chances in the match but that day did not see her play her best tennis.
She added that she just had only a few points left for her to carry the day, but even though we sometimes put ourselves in a winning position, it doesn’t always come through the way we wanted it.
For Simona Halep who is currently World Number 1, there were no such difficulties as she struck home to defeat Japan’s Kurumi Nara with a 6-2 6-4 score line.
