Do you think a modern-day spy would use a VPN?

I just finished writing an article about A Spy AMong Friends, a brand new TV series produced by ITV in the UK. This is a special series as it is made to bring some publicity to their new streaming service ITVX. It is one of the first productions like this and they do hope that many people will register for the streaming service because of this.

But, that leads me to another question. The series is about spies. The story takes place during the Second World War (as far as I understand), and back then, you didn't have computer, mobile phones, and thus, no need for VPN connections.

But, even though we live in a different period, there are still spies around out there to steal information and share it with people in other places. Even though it seems strange, you can be sure that there are spies in all the countries of the world today. They are present to steal information and they have double identities in order to seem trustworthy to both sides. I remember, not long ago, I heard about someone who worked as a spy from Russia who almost got a good place in Brussels and the EU where they could get intel and intelligence useful for Russia.

But, do you think those modern day spies use VPN connections? They might not use a public VPN as we know it, but you can know for sure that they use technologies that will encrypt their data and hide their online activities from the masses. And if you are a spy, it isn't enough to just use a VPN extension in your browser. They need to hide every single part of activities that might put them in dark light. As a result, they encrypt their hard drives, pen drives, every single online movement.

Modern day spies...

I just did some reading, and often a spy in the modern sense is recruited in his/her own country. How are they recruited? There are officers working in that given country who has the task of finding useful and important intel currently out of reach. While doing a normal job, they try to get in contact with people in the right positions. As they get friends, the officer will try to turn the inside person to hand over information, but this is a very tough task, because if they do it wrong, they will blow their cover and suddenly they are in danger. At the same time, the insider has to be careful. That is why the officer teach the insiders all sorts of technics to remain hidden, how to share data, and so much more. And this is probably how VPN services also come into question.

But, what about spies back during the Second World War? Take a look at the series A Spy Among Friends on ITVX to find out.
