Rocks Rock!!! 🤘

in ssglife •  6 years ago

I collect silver, coins and bullion....but I also really like collecting rocks! I was looking through some of the rocks we found last summer, for any that would be good for polishing. These were some of my interesting ones that were to big to be tumbled. Lighter for size reference.

Iron Ore

Iron ore is Michigan’s most valuable non-fuel, mined commodity. In 1994, the Lake Superior area produced 95% of the US’s supply of iron ore. Check out these pieces we found while visiting Iron Mountain and vicinity. They both have a nice Quartz vein in them, but it's hard to see in the pic.

Pyrite

I know @summertooth is laughing at this tiny Pyrite sample compared to some of the examples from Peru. I found these so that makes these ones cooler. They are hard to see in these pics. Take a look.

What was that??? You want to see them a little bit closer? I can accommodate that.

Then there is this one...

I have no idea what this one is. It has the weight of a rock but is as smooth as glass. It has 2 sides that are "not polished" but very flat. The part that confuses me is the rough broken parts. It seems like they wouldn't be polished if they were broken off. It has all sorts of layers/lines of other colors going across the whole thing.

What do you think this could be? I have no idea but it looks cool. Check it out.

That's all for today. Do you have any idea what that Red Rock could be? Let me know what you think.

I like the red one. I'm pretty sure it's red Jasper.

Nice! It looks like we do have Red Jasper here. I'll have to take it to someone and find out for sure. It sure is cool looking.

The red thing looks like a chunk of fire hydrant. 🤔😉🤣

HAHAHA. That would be interesting for sure. It's heavy but not that heavy.

First of all, are you sure that's pyrite? Maybe it's the more elusive outtafuckinfocusite? I don't know, I am NOT a geologist.
As for that red thing, it is cool but I would bet dollars to doughnuts (WHOLE doughnuts) that it is some kind man-made composite material. Super cool though.

I'm pretty sure it's Pyrite growing on something. They are little yellowish cubes on there and I don't know what else in the area it could be. That red thing is weird. I don't know what it is but would love to find out. Found it on a riverbank with nothing like it around. Just doesn't make sense that the jagged edges are polished but not the "cut" edges.

Just giving you a hard time, that pyrite is nice and it's 10x better when you find it yourself. Nice find VG!

This year I'm shooting for some bigger Pyrite and Agates. Hoping this weekend is the last snow we get, I'm ready to camp.
