What I learned about commenting. π
On Steemit, your success is basically determined by how many lives you can impact via your posts, comments, upvotes, etc. This post will be focusing on the comments aspect.
Comments are one of the best ways to meet people and build relationships with people of same interest or with people of like minds on Steemit.β It can help you build not just your following but surrounds you with people that truly appreciate you for you. Your comment should be able to attract people to visit your blog. Then your posts should be able to keep them there. π
Some authors appreciate comments more than upvotes. But it's not every post you have to comment on. Commenting on posts owned by people that do not normally reply to comments is basically a waste of time.π But if you must comment, it should be an important message you want to pass to others that read the post.
Things to do or not to do;
Make sure to have a bright looking and fun profile picture. Dreary pictures or no picture at all is totally unflattering and uninspiring. π
Avoid dropping links of your posts especially with comments that have nothing to do with the authors post. Unless your specific link is asked for, it's bad form to drop it. π
Always read a post before commenting to avoid off point and embarrassing situations. π±If you don't understand what you have read in a post, either ask politely for an explanation or don't comment at all. Remember, it's not an obligation.
Don't go around echoing or repeating things from the post unless you have something specific to add to that particular line or you want to ask a question relating to it. πGenerally, just make sense in your comments.
Learn to ask questions and challenge ideas politely. It makes you seem intelligent. Create a conversation about the post or add to the post or better yet, just express your gratitude at what you learnt from the post. π
Writing a good comment;
Greet or acknowledge the author. You could mention their name e.g hello @thot2word. It shows proper etiquette and people like to be acknowledged. They like to know that you see them.π
Give a heartfelt and genuine comment. Thanking someone genuinely for a wonderful post not only makes the person happy, but motivates him/her to post more quality content. Avoid famzingπ― IE showering excess praise. It makes you look insincere. Focus more on praise of the post and the author's ability than praise of the author.
Add extra value. You could add a personal experience or a different perspective to a post. You could ask a useful question to open up more discussion. Show that you are valuable. πBe entertaining, be useful, be interesting, be insightful(share personal insight).
Give thoughtful contributions. Contribute positively. For example, if you know more ways to make good comments, please add it in the comments below. I would very much appreciate it. πππ
You could make a goodbye promise to the author, to follow, resteem or share the post on other social media. It makes you stand out. ππ
Add pictures to your comments. Pictures relating to the post, lovely, necessary pictures, not just any kind of picture. Do it intelligently. πβ
These things will most likely help your commenting life the way it helped mine. If you already knew them, it's never a bad idea to refresh the memory. ππ
On a closing note, I quote from @ogochukwu "the truth is that, it is not everyone that will appreciate your comments but it is better to make 10 thoughtful comments daily than 1000 generic and watered down comments. **Here on Steemit, comments are counted as posts and rewarded duly, it is left to you to make each one matter."

These advises remind me of my psychological counseling classes. On my opinion, they actually come together on one point:
You need to show your attending skills. You need to show the other person you are there, physically and mentally. (In this case mentally of course) We all want to feel listened to :)
