I was just grappling with someone who claimed that Stand Your Ground laws are just there to open the door for white people to shoot black people with impunity. He's a guy older than I am.
This is a position so dumb, that it took me a moment to grab on to my thoughts.
It's not true.
No matter how you put it, if you're assaulted, you're fucked by no fault of your own.
Without the law being involved, you're fucked because you're being attacked by somebody who is prepared and wants the fight while you're not prepared and don't want the fight.
If you win the fight, you're fucked because leftists want to throw you in prison for the rest of your life.
There are five elements of self-defense: innocence, imminence, proportionality, reasonableness, and avoidance.
The only element that Stand Your Ground brings into question is avoidance.
Basically, if you're against Stand Your Ground, and you're on a jury, you're willing to look at a person who you acknowledge is innocent, used reasonable judgement against an imminent, deadly threat, and acted properly; but, if you decide in your air-conditioned room in your safe, comfy chair that the person could have run away -- you rule for guilt and send the innocent person to person for the rest of his or her life.
This isn't about race.
It's about basic logic.
Conflicts arise when both parties believe they are standing their ground.
For example, two drug dealers believe they have rights to the same corner. The squatter and home owner both see the garage as their home. Two Walmart shoppers grab for the same Stanley Cup Coffee Mug, etc.
Stand your ground rulings have problems as conflicts often center on who has access to the ground.
