You may have heard that SpaceX has sent a red Tesla Roadster out into space. Well, it has now been registered by NASA as a fixture.

Many of us watched Elon Musk’s Falcon Heavy rocket propel the electric car out in to space.

Amusingly, the car is being ‘driven’ by a dummy in a spacesuit named Starman. Additionally, the legend “DON’T PANIC” is plastered on the control panel.

Tesla Starman – the secrets

The car is now a permanent advertisement on the NASA HORIZONS directory of solar system bodies.

Eric Holthaus over at Grist Tweeted that you can just head over to the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s HORIZONS web interface.

To view the details for yourself head on over to https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/horizons.cgi and then click ‘change’ next to the target body. Now, type in ‘SpaceX’ and hit enter. Next, click ‘Generate ephemeris’.

You’ll find both the details about the Roadster, as well as its ephemeris. That’s its position in the sky (I had to check).

This is the same system that tracks all the other bodies in the Solar System, including satellites and stuff like Mars.

A giggle

However, that rather official page also reveals a secret.

It turns out that, on the dash, there’s a Hot Wheels toy model with a mini-Starman inside.

Furthermore, inside the Roadster is a copy of Isaac Asmiov’s Foundation novels contained on a storage drive.

The car is now in an orbit that takes it between .99 and 1.7 astronomical units, where one astronomical unit is approximately the distance between the Earth and the Sun. On average, Mars is 1.5 au from the Sun.

A mini version of ...?

Ahahaha...

I think mankind's hit the jackpot in the humor department with whoever thought to include that feature on the Tesla hehe

Now to pray no micrometeorites or other space phenomenon degrades whatever keeps it attached to the Tesla !

Great to have you on the platform Jay :)

I'm betting you're one of us people who're going to tell everyone their new astrological sign is "Starman" ;)

Thanks Peter. I'm still finding my feet here but I am liking who I've met so far.

Yes, I am on the cusp of Starman with Blackstar rising :D

Haha, that's hilarious. Let's hope it doesn't come crashing back to Earth!

That would kinda be quite the anticlimax, now wouldn't it? :/
