Another traditional art attempt with Grey Jedi, Mace Windu. The expression of Samuel L Jackson was not able to display his badasle fierce some look but it is extremely therapeutic in the process. I outlined the image with color pencils to mark out the different tones which later will be the essential information in the art making process. The light sabre was not as straight as imagined but nevertheless the addictive practice of blending oil pastels made it worthwhile to execute illuminated effect.
I took reference on my tiny iPhone goggling online for the image to produce this piece on A3 size. Overwhelmed with digital art around us so this is my way return to the basics and not as if I am a digital art person but finding balance to appreciate traditional art tools, which I neglect during my childhood days.
Oil Pastel is difficult to work on small area so make sure you get bigger piece of paper to work on it and mostly it depends on the subject chosen for the art making session.
Pointers to take note as the following:
Make sure the subject have larger area for the oil pastel to blend and detail, meaning that more areas for long strokes for blending of colors which encourages the process to be fun and consistent for beginner.
Manage your expectation of the final product whether it is extremely realistic with endless details or simply 70-80%.
You will not have all the required colors in a limited art set so essentially grasp the concept for " there is unlikely wrong colors but only error intensity of tones in the image." Just imagine that you can edit colors to create sepia, monochrome effects but if the tones are inappropriate it simulate the similar failed effect of the extremely light or over-toast photocopied images. A creative approach is utilise what limited colors you already have to achieve the same result and recreating the subject under a different light environment.
Always get 48 colors collection as oil pastel is relatively affordable and do get another box in different nip size, preferable one box in smaller size for detailing and the other larger to emphasise on the bigger area.
