I did my best to avoid spoilers, but I did see a few reviews that were generally positive. @hanshotfirst did two posts (on different accounts). He changed his mind about it.
Firstly I'll say that this is a visually awesome movie. The effects are state of the art as you would expect. The plot has a couple of strands of Rey's quest to get Luke back into things and the rebels trying to get away from the First Order. I don't find Daisy Ridley as Rey the most engaging character, but she does pretty well in this and gets some nice combat sequences. There's a lot of battles and no trade negotiations (thank the Force for that).
It brings some of the characters we met in the last movie together for some essential confrontations. We get some nice Jedi action too, but in different ways to before. There are some new characters, but some seem superfluous. There are several scenes that echo previous movies for some serious deja vu.
There are several cute aliens that are not essential to the plot, but will sell some toys. You will have seen the otter/penguin porg in the trailer.
There is a lot of humour in this movie that got the audience laughing, but also some brutal violence. It's not bloody, but you have to expect deaths in Star Wars. Clue is in the title.
It is very entertaining. My whole family enjoyed it. There were just a few things that niggled me that I can't always put my finger on. I'd definitely like to see it again to pick up more details. We know Carrie Fisher can't be in the next one, but she is a major presence in this one.
Some aspects are bound to upset the purists, but I just take it as entertainment.
May the force be with you.
I'll buy guitar picks for Steem Dollars

Thanks for the review steev, I see you are trying to be diplomatic. From what I have heard this movie was just as bad as 'The Force Awakens', which was terrible. It looks like Disney have finally managed to extinguish a great legacy.

Depends on your criteria for a good movie. I enjoyed it despite some of the plot issues. Movies are a business and the fans won't always get what they want

These Star Wars movies are being churned out since Disney bought Lucasfilm, i have pretty much lost interest in the franchise now.

Fair enough. It's obvious Disney want toys to sell, but this is pretty brutal stuff.

I stopped watching movies a few years ago and the last movie I saw was the last star wars only because my son begged me to go with him whenever that came out. I was there on opening day in 1977 and had seen all the rest of the movies many times.
I completely lost the plot in the last one and knew I was not going to this one. But my son did go see it and he is howling. The comedy, the carrie fisher parts, and the guy with no shirt on, and people dying randomly were things he really was not happy about.
I barely listened, but he ranted for about 2 hours to me the other day. The end of it came to the conclusion that I was right not to bother seeing it and so I won't :) Too busy anyway due to this thrilling place.

Most movies are silly, but some folk take Star Wars too seriously in my opinion. I was entertained, but also disappointed that some issues were not resolved properly

My son is in the "too seriously" camp. So many details! He is hoping the next one will make sense of this one and is very unhappy.

IMO there were too many humorous scenes in the movie. Overall I find the movie being a good movie (even for a Star Wars fan), but some scenes were trying to be fun, but weren't.
To avoid spoilers: first scene of Luke was not fun at all. This is not how Luke behaves and scene of lightsaber + Reys head - either not fun at all.

@steevc, great review and am glad you didn't spoil it, I am planning on seeing over the Christmas Break, maybe next weekend... looking forward to it, love the Star Wars Saga.
I would expect the visual effects keep getting better over time, the technology that goes into making these SiFi movies is what drives innovations in film making. We can thank Lukas for that, he is a pioneer in effects right from the very first Star Wars film,
The Star Wars Saga is such a great storyline of good versus evil, the Republic vs the Empire, that it has attracted followers from many generations, young and old. With a Si-Fi twist, it’s a storyline we can all relate to and has appeal from all cultures around the world. The battle of good versus evil is the bases of most stories, movies and novels, now we can start telling the same Star Wars storyline with a Crypto/BlockChain vs. Central Bank/Gov't twist.
I just wrote a blog comparing the Star Wars Saga to the Crypto Wars Saga, it's a new storyline I am writing.
Let me know what you think... Cheers

My daughter Monique saw it with her boyfriend on Saturday. They said the first half was slow going?

It's a long film and a lot happens. I didn't get bored, but there were a few 'huh' moments. I need to see it again really.
