It seems like no galaxy is too far, or price tag too high, for some Star Wars franchise fans..
Less than 3 weeks ago Disney opened the gates to it's Star Wars theme park extension, Galaxy's Edge. The park has been abuzz with excited fans young and old since it grand opening on May 31st. While there are plenty of Star Wars themed attractions including rides, games and food; what has seemed to captivated Rebel and Imperialist sympathizers the most is undoubtedly the merchandise..
From Apparel to Artifacts, Artisan-Style Toys to Holocrons, and everywhere in between. Star Wars Galaxy's Edge has got you covered..
Disney has obviously pulled out all the stops for the the latest expansion park, and the quality of memorabilia definitely shows. Of course the items being touted don't come cheap.. From a set of "Chance Cubes" that cost eight dollars, to a chance to build your own Custom Lightsaber, which will set you back $200, you better come with a planned budget or be prepared to take out a second mortgage on your house..
But by far the most jaw-dropping piece of equipment comes with a correspondingly astronomical price tag.. for a mere 25,000 greenback, you can fetch yourself a 3.5 ft life-sized fully-automated R-unit Droid.. Yup, 250 Benjamins..
The purchase comes with an array of customization to choose from including your choice of color, and even whether you want your astromech fighter-pilot companion to come sleek and shiny, or weathered and battle-worn..
The robot looks and sounds like a mirror image of R2D2 from the famed trilogy of trilogies.. it's enough to have any die-hard fan salivating.. however, the price tag will certainly make everyone immediately banish any thought of ever owning one.. right?
Wait, people are actually buying these things??
Apparently so! Disney has off-loaded a grand total of three of the units in the first week! If you're doing the math.. that's $75,000 worth in one week.. and no, there is no chance at a season pass discount, or refund or exchange for that matter.. you better hope you like what you get, cause there's no going back once the transaction has been made..
Now, it seems unlikely that Disney would continue to unleash these behemoths at a rate of 3 per week, but if they did, they would be raking in $3.9 million annually on Droids alone..
If you don't have the stomach, or the wallet, for a remote-controlled hunk of metal that costs as much as a car, you can always go for the much smaller 1.5ft build-a-droid at a lot more manageable (but still expensive) $100. All droids can be build and bought at Galaxy's Edge store Droid Depot.
