Major spoilers in this so I highly recommend you stop reading now if you have not seen the movie.
The movie was amazing. I feel like it was a masterpiece in every respect but one. Hollywood is not used to stories like this and you can clearly see it in how they treat death of main characters. This movie basically EVERYONE DIES, not most of the characters like most movies. This movie was a relentless butchering of main characters in ways I think are unprecedented in content of its paradigm.
This wasn't regular death scenes followed by remorse either. It was death followed by marching on of the story with absolutely no time to pay respects to ANYONE in any way. Hollywood is not used to this kind of movie in any way shape or form. Especially noticeable at the very end of the movie you get to see a massacre take place at Darth Vader's personal hands in a brutal death march not even seen to the likes of Friday the 13nth Jason Voorhees with a glowing blade and throat crushing telekinesis. Could the guy stuck to the fucking ceiling even BREATH while he felt Vader cut him in half like a Mortal Kombat finishing move?
Two of the characters were killed by annoying grenade mechanics. Basically one of the most annoying ways to die in a video game and you get to see it take place not once but twice with lasting impact on the story.
The movie then ends suddenly with "A new hope" .. Then plays super up beat Star Wars music.
Think we could have at least got a fucking ceremony or SOMETHING? Think they could have at least played sad music at the end showing pictures of the characters like a memorial? How about a scene showing their graves or symbolic caskets being shot out into space. SOMETHING.. Nope, they just plodded along with the usual song and dance like it was any of the other Star Wars films. Imagine if they treated Spock this way?
"Oh no! the Romulans randomly dropped a grenade and Spock was blown apart from the explosion! Lets just continue the movie like he never existed! Bones died because he fell down some stairs! The story must go on!"
Hell what if they treated Han or Obi-Wan this way?
Then to top that off, the first Star Wars movie they failed to actually blow the damn death star up anyway. So not only were they all basically lost in time forever with zero condolences they didn't accomplish their goal. I wasn't feeling this hope they talked about at all. It was more like massacre of Rogue one that accomplished almost nothing at all.
If that was what the movie was supposed to be then fine. But at least be a little more considerate and self aware about it. Don't parade a bunch of amazing characters then pull them apart in front of me like a machine churning out meaningless charred bodies.
It is my understanding that soldiers in action do not permit themselves to get distracted from the mission while it is in progress. Any grief or remorse are set aside until the mission is completed. There are always exceptions, but emotional detachment seems necessary to success when faced with a situation where heavy casualties are expected.
Perhaps the film is more real than you think

Even Saving Private Ryan did a better job of this. Sure, show the horror of war. But dont just toss characters out the window without some kind of closure.
