Your thoughts on Puerto Rico becomming the 51st state of the U.S.

in statehood •  7 years ago

I had seen on the news early this morning that Puerto Rico has voted to petition to become the 51st United State... While it has always been kicked around that Puerto Rico should go ahead and become a state , The Majority of Puerto Ricans had been either against it or simply had no desire to do so. During the time i had lived in Florida, the many Puerto Rican's i had known and worked with said they didn't think it would ever happen. Having said that most Puerto Ricans liked being a territory while still being self governed.

So, like many of us who aren't Puerto Rican, I gotta ask..... What changed you minds? like why now? What has changed in Puerto Rico that has the majority of Puerto Ricans voting FOR statehood now? Maybe some of our Puerto Rican friends can weigh in and tell us.. Even if you're not a Puerto Rican i want to hear your thoughts on the issue. .. I'm very curious to know what everyone's opinion and thoughts are on this issue....or even if this is the first you've heard of it...i mean anything...

I've thought for a while it should have happened a long time ago. They're already US citizens down there. They may as well be an official state.

same here.... but for many Puerto Ricans, they have always wanted that separation, and distinction of being their own country.

They've been having these votes since I was a kid. They have even voted to be a state before. I was always amused at how these votes get ignored. I don't think the voting has anything to do with the US Government and it's plans for PR.
