I have been inspired by the @masteryoda's work on author rewards.
Each payout is split in a 75:25 ratio between authors and curators. @masteryoda did a great job with authors portion of the reward, but what about the curators?
I have compiled the 7-day average rewards for the top curators, and normalized them against individuals Steem Power to derive a ranking. Whats more, the ranking also tells us how much would a curator yield on a yearly basis, if their performance remains consistent.
Chart:
aAvg is an annualized version of the 7 day curation rewards.
It does not include compounding.
The formula I used to calculate aAvg is as follows:
(7_day_rewards_average / user_steem_power) * 100 * 365

This is fascinating. So it seems you don't have to have huge SP to make decent earnings through curation, but it does help a lot and it has a massive effect on the size of your earnings.

If you look at a someone like @positive, virtually every post he upvotes is a $500 post... so he must have some algo to observe whales voting and game it. And now @furion buys it. Why?

I think "top curators" is a misnomer. Most of the users on that list aren't reading that articles they upvote but instead use bots; some have teams that curate for them.
I'm sorry if this sounds harsh. I'm not judging, just saying it's not as simple as this. I also think this post is a nice idea and will hopefully raise the importance of curation on steemit.

I wonder if bots went away, if anything would be different?
Bots simply vote on things that other participants vote on, just faster. If we eliminated bots, some group of top authors would emerge, and people would compete on trying to time the vote perfectly, just like bots do now.

Some bots vote on things that other users vote on, other bots have a "curation list" which they read from. If we eliminated bots, curation would be limited to what humans can achieve manually, which would be substantially different. You'd probably see a lot more "real" curators in the list.

By your list my aAverage is 95.87 (13.57/5196) x 100 x 365 but that doesn't seem to correlate with the numbers you display... hmm.

13.57 is your weekly sum, not the average. 95% is therefore your 7 year avg.
To get the aAvg for 1 year, you need to use your 7 day average, which is 13.57/7.
