North Carolina Memorial at Gettysburg

in statuefriday •  6 years ago

Today is #statuefriday for the #sevendaysoutside challenge by @erikah

The Battle of Gettysburg was the largest and most deadly battle of the American Civil War. The battle lasted three days and involved over 160,000 men.

More than a quarter were killed, wounded, or taken prisoner.

Today, Gettysburg National military Park has 1200 monuments.

The monument was sculpted by American sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who later went on to carve the mountain in South Dakota known as Mount Rushmore.

The Text on the Monument reads:

"To the eternal glory of the North Carolina soldiers. Who on this battlefield displayed heroism unsurpassed sacrificing all in support of their cause. Their valorous deeds will be enshrined in the hearts of men long after these transient memorials have crumbled into dust."
"Thirty two North Carolina regiments were in action at Gettysburg July 1,2,3, 1863. One Confederate soldier in every four who fell here was a North Carolinian."
"This tablet erected by the North Carolina Division United Daughters of the Confederacy."

The Parthenon stands as the centerpiece of Centennial Park, in Nashville. The re-creation of the 42-foot statue Athena is the focus of the Parthenon just as it was in ancient Greece. The building and the Athena statue are both full-scale replicas of the Athenian originals.

Stories of war and conflict are illustrated across Athena’s shield and pedestal.

A golden snak symbolizing the Athenian people—stands protected between the goddess and her shield.

That is certainly golden! 42 feet! She must be amazing to see in person! Great photos!

The color tone suits this photo a lot. Loved it!

Great shot of the statue. Very touching information. The sheer number of those who died in the Civil War is mind boggling. I have not been to Gettysburg, but have been to Kennesaw Mountain in Georgia a few times.

Thank you, All of the battlefield sites are heartbreaking. I've been to Savannah, but otherwise have not spent much time in Georgia. It seems like such a beautiful state.

Postingan yang sangat bagus sekali sahabat aku ,saya sangat suka sekali dengan postingan mu ini terimakasih telah berbagi

I am happy you like it!

Great job Melinda, I haven't seen sepia for a while but it's a great choice for statues and old monuments like this. it gives the whole place a vintage feeling. Well done!

Thanks! I'm happy you like it.

We should do more sepia!

I do like sepia. Did you know that after the war Abraham Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address at the cemetery that was created due to this battle?

I didn't know that, thanks for letting me know.

When I was 10 or 11 years old in American history class, we were given options for several projects and one of the choices was to memorize the Gettysburg Address and that's what I chose. I can still say a lot of it, but I need a few prompts now and then. I loved being at this place and knowing that's where Lincoln stood when he said those words.

Great memories, must have been nice.

the gun still uses bamboo ...

I'm not sure I understand?

the weapon is still using a stick for war.

I hope the day will come when there is no more war and we have peace on earth.

Hey @melinda010100, i loved your capture and loved the sepia effect and it involved over 1,60,000 men :o

The American Civil War 1861-1865 was a horrendous event. So many men died. This was just one awful battle. It is estimated that 620, 000 people died because of the war.

oh 6,20,000 people died thats so sad :|

hopefully in the future there will be no more civil war and hopefully get well soon the person who was injured in the war and hopefully always peaceful in the future amen.

World Peace. A dream for us all to dream. Thank you for sharing this.

Nice photo, that tree branches in the background make this photo looks even more dramatic. And I love the description, it really nice to learn something new.

Thank you, my friend! I love the new things I learn from you. too.

Ok,,sangat @melinda010100

I have always wanted to visit the Civil War battlefields. I haven't gotten there yet...but hopefully one day soon. Thanks for sharing this glimpse into one more reason why I should go.

We made it to several of them over the years, but this trip was particularly filled with history. Besides Gettysburg, we also went to Manassas, Monticello, Appomattox, James Madison's home, and spent a day in Washington DC on the mall. It was one of my favorite road trips.

Wow! That sounds wonderful! Id say you are an expert 😀

howdy there melinda010100! what a great post. I love sculptures and memorials to soldiers of all wars and boy would I love to visit Gettysburg!

The only way to get there is just do it! This would be the perfect time of year.

haha! well I tell you what, I will keep that in mind for next year and that will provide a whole series of posts because of that trip! I like that idea, and I'll tell em Melinda made me do it!

There you go! It will be worth it, I can guarantee it!

Striking shot and facts of life. North Carolina got hit hard in Gettysburg. The battlefield is a vast open field, which I didn't expect. Now that I live in Virginia, I can see they are all like that.

I went to the reenactment they had a few years ago at Gettysburg and it was truly an eyeopener to see the conditions these men endured.

Thank you for an awesome post and a reminder that freedom isn't free. Have a fabulous Friday!

I was surprised by all the monuments. You could spend days there just stopping to see those. What a hearbreaking piece of earth.

That's a beautiful photo, Melinda! resteemed :)

Thank you! And thanks for the share! 😘
