Daily Coin # 90 A 1945 Swiss Franc

in steamsilvergold •  6 years ago  (edited)

The coin from today yesterday the day before that and tomorrow all pretty much look the same with the exception of year and value ! The old saying "If it ain't broke don't fix it" certainly works for the Swiss . The designs of the 1/2 , 1 , 2 franc coins have changed very little since 1879. One of the major changes was in 1983 the design was updated when Jura seceded from the Canton of Bern and became the 23rd canton of the Swiss Confederation so an extra star was added . The last of the silver francs of course was minted in 1967 . These coins are still being minted in cupro-nickel today in Switzerland . Today's coin however is minted from .835 % silver , weighs 5 grams , and is 23.3 mm in diameter by 1.52 mm thick . In 1945 they minted 7,794,000 of these coins in Bern .
The obverse of this coin of course has the much adored figure of Helvetia holding a spear and leaning on her shield , while being surrounded by 22 stars and her name below !

The very simple and beautiful (thanks Ron) reverse has nothing but a value and year surrounded by a wreath and a mint mark (B) below the ribbon !

The edge of the coin of course is reeded .
