Why to see Stedelijk Museum
Amsterdam’s city architect A. W. Weissman constructed Stedelijk Museum in 1895. The exterior is designed in 16th century Dutch Renaissance style, with red brick, a gable and a small tower. The interior has been modernized constantly over the years. Lastly, group of Dutch artists from Benthem Crouwel Architects built the New Annex, for temporary exhibitions. This controversial part of the building was opened to the public in 2012, as a new wing. Though some call it “the bathtub”, Amsterdammers love the contrast on the facade and its bright white interior.
The collection of Stedelijk Museum is celebrated as one of the most creative and most intriguing in the world. Firstly, it’s fun to visit it! Many famous names appear here: Cezanne, Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, Mondrian, Kandinsky Chagall, Pollock, Warhol, Liechtenstein, Rauschenberg, De Kooning, and many others. The museum shows amazing 29 paintings of Casimir Malevich and a superb selection of Dutch photography. Great collection of European and American design and furniture, as well as ceramics, jewelry, industrial and graphic design and installations all have their place in this institution.
Significance of Stedelijk Museum
Stedelijk Museum is one of the world's greatest galleries dedicated to modern and contemporary international art. It rivals Tate Modern in London, Centre Pompidou in Paris and The Guggenheim in New York.
Contemporary exhibitions of young artists’ work in Stedelijk Museum are especially important. They promote new generations, who shape the future of arts. Extensive permanent collection of Stedelijk Museum changes from time to time, because the Museum wants to show as much as possible. It also organizes many special tours and short courses, artists’ interviews, debates, lectures and performances.
