Once there was a family who were very poor. They did not have a father as he had died. The mother worked very hard doing washing for other people just to feed her children.
They all lived in a big box in the street, and when winter came it was not easy for the mother to see how difficult it was for her children. With everything, she was trying the best she could do was feed them and, tried to keep them as warm as possible. It was a very hard life for them all.
There was no school as it was winter and, she knew at least the children went to school they did get something to eat from the teachers.
One day the mother went to the church and said can I please leave my children here as they are freezing at night and I am so scared that they will die.
The minister said, why did you not come a long time ago?
We have room here for anyone who is hungry and cold.
The mother said I felt too bad because I did not want to bring the children to church as they only have one set of clothes and all the other children looked so beautiful in their very smart dresses.
The minister said then you do not know God at all, he does not mind what you look like or where you come from as long as you believe in him.
They moved into the church for the winter and for the first time they had a bible to read and saw that God was good and did not just care for the rich.
He came for the poor and all men on earth. It was nearly the end of the year and the children asked if they can go and look at the fireworks for the New Year.
The mother said, ask the minister as he is the one who is clever and he would tell you what to do.
The children sat with him and asked him if they could go.
He said you have given me the greatest idea ever.
I will go and see the mayor of the town and ask him if for one year he would not just give all the money that was shot into the air to the church.
It only lasted only a few minutes and then there was only the cleaning up to do.
With not a lot of persuasion he did get the whole town to agree and to build a wonderful building where all the poor people could stay and be helped instead of just a few crackers going up and this would be a legacy for the town.
This was not a big town but they did spend as much money as some of the bigger cities yet it was enough to build this lovely safe house for so many people who were struggling.
When the other tiny towns heard what they had done they all started doing the same.
They all realised that these beautiful crackers would only last for one night but the safe house would be there for ever.
From then on everyone was happy and as life became better the children started helping people as well, as they were now reading the bible and realising that without the help of God, we could not do anything.
This mothers children became such good people that they carried on with the tradition and later the building started teaching school children and helped them go to University.
So with just one good idea the whole town became a happy town with children who became doctors and nurses and priests as well as teachers.
This is what happens when no one is selfish and try to help the weak and poor.
