Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo

Colombo is the heart and the capital of Sri Lanka; anyhow with busy streets, crowdy spaces, and concrete surrounding. So, people needs something to escape that scenery. As majority of the crowd in Colombo are from the outside/ rural areas including me, this space is a much needed one.

I must say Viharamahadevi Park serves that purpose with an amazing atmosphere, beautiful gardens, walking paths, playing areas, etc.

It's one of the largest and oldest public parks in Sri Lanka. The park is located located in Town Hall, where we can access the place from various parts. If you take a 122 route from the Pettah Bus stand it will be just around 20 minutes journey. Or else you can rent a tuck pretty easily.

When I was in Colombo it was my habit to visit there once in a two/ three month with my girlfriend or friend to have some quality time. The most amazing thing about the place is the quality neighborhood. The streets are well maintained, and having most popular tourist destinations nearby like, National Museum, Nelum Pokuna Theatre, Gangarama Temple, Colombo Public Library, etc. So, most of the times the park is crowded with tourists and locals.

It's said that the park was uilt at the reign of the British Colonial Government, and even during World War II it was used by the British army. Anyway, the park was reinnovated and made public. It was named after Queen Viharamahadevi, the mother of King Dutugemunu, one of the greatest kings in Sri Lanka history.

Last time I visited the place was in 2023. The images were taken at that time. You know the entrance for the park is free. There are no gates, entrance, or fence. So, you can enter from anywhere. There are many parking lots around, for a very small fee as well.

There are many reasons for the high popularity of the place. The clean environement, greenery, and scenic beauty is the main thing. There are well-maintained gardens, flowers, huge trees everywhere. The place is a perfect place for relaxatation and stress release.

There are Walking & Jogging Paths. So, people usually come here in weekends, in evenings to excercise.

It's like heaven for the kids. Not only for the huge area, and peaceful envirionment to run and play, but there's a seperate dedicated play area, with swings, slides, and fun activities. It's a common scene for the families to come here.

The park has several small pond with fountains But the most amazing thing is the availabaility of a boat service in one small lake. Well, we can rent boats size of 2/3 people, for around a dollar for one person. We have to ride them manually, and we are provided with safety jackests as well. It's a very nice experience with the breeze.

Muscovy ducks and horses are also a commong sight in the park.

So, with all this features Viharamahadevi park is a crowded place with families, lovers, students, tourists, etc. With the huge space available, it can be booked for functions like exhibitions, musical performances, photography sessions, and festivals as well.
