Pets Vs No Pets

in steem-bounty •  7 years ago

Hi Everyone,

I'm going to set a #steem-bounty for my first time ever on this post so you could get paid for your comment. The @steem-bounty payment is in addition to any upvote or curation rewards. This is a very simple question, why or why not is it a good idea to keep pets? No answer is right or wrong, I just want to hear the reasoning. Thoughtless off topic comments will not qualify for a bounty.

Unless you live in a box, you probably know my opinion on pets😸 Most of my life I've had pets, a few cats, a couple dogs and other various creatures. The worst time to have pets is while you are away at university, traveling or if you can't adequately take care of them. I wouldn't have a dog because I live in a condo, there is no yard and I have a full-time job. Crypticat is fine on her own, I don't believe a dog would be.

There was a period of my life where I couldn't have a pet, but now I have a cat and life is better. People who don't have pets without a reason come across as odd to me, just like people who have too many pets. What do you think?

I like pets, however, at the moment, I don't have any but I had 2 dogs and I know how fun is it to have pets. I also had a cat once. All these pets were very loving...I still miss them. I think people who don't have pets may be due to a reason, otherwise, I think everyone, (or most of the people) love pets.

You're right. I'm sure you have a reason not to get a pet right now that shows you respect animals more than many pets owners.

I love pets a lot. I had fish, dogs and cats, and I know how lovely life is when you have pets. I also like hens and ducks, and lamb as well. I may have lot of pets if have enough space.

Hens, ducks and lamb? Are you sure those are pets? If you or anyone ate them, they are not pets! I'd love to get enough land to raise some livestock, I'd have plenty of cats running around and a dog too.

A balanced human has at least one pet, usually a dog or a cat. Dogs have masters, cats have servants. A balanced household has both, the combined weight of the cats being equal to the combined weight of the dogs. (Feline mustelids do not count in the equation.)

If you have a pair of mastiffs you should balance them with about 35 cats. If on the other hand you have a pair of tigers you should probably have about 130 chihuahuas, or snacks.

The best cats are the ones which turn up at your door and ask to be let in. Unless they are old and cranky, but you have to let them in too.

Trust me, I'm a doctor.

I have a lovely frog and some fish. The frog is rather nice but he can be noisy at night so he gets his own room. The fish are repaxing and perfect. Both can easily be left to their own for a couple of weeks thanks to water filters and autofeeders. I am thinking of buying a fluffy white cat but they make a lot of fur and dander and I cant leave it alone for two weeks. There are a lot of low maintence pets that dont cause any allergies. I think children take up more time and money and you cannot keave them alone for even one or two days. Maybe robots can make great pet substitutes beacuse they can take care of themselves and be programmed to your liking.

Robots won't replace pets, they will just replace toys and appliances. Adult brains aren't wired to care for them. Simply turn it off. Glad you have frogs and fish, but I'm sure a cat would enrich your life much more. Find a neighbour who will take care of your cat while you're gone, pay them for their time.

Pets like dogs and cats will give you back a ton of love. Also pets help children to learn responsibility and connect with animals. The only drawback could be the expenses. Sadly not everybody is able to feed himself and a pet (not even counting the vet bills, toys, ...)

My thoughts exactly, if you can't afford a pet don't get one, cats especially mixed breeds aren't that expensive. Dogs often cost more than owning a car. Often kids get pets and dump them on their family, I don't know why any parent would accept that behavior. A family discussion is a prerequisite to pet ownership. Some parents don't want cats because they think they will hurt their children, this to me is also ridiculous, what kind of cat would attack a child who is playing nice?

I have two dogs and enjoy their company and being the leader of my pack. I believe that the responsibility of caring for another life has positive affects on a person’s mental state and out look. One of the most relaxing things for me is sitting with one of my dogs while watching tv or listening to something and petting them and existing with them. Just being around them has a calming affect on me. They have been training wheels for me for when I had children. Now I have my son or daughter or both on one side and one if my boys on other and those quiet moments spent enjoying each other’s company and existing together are my most precious moments. I believe these moments have lead to deep, meaningful relationships and I would have never discovered these precious moments without my dogs. I don’t know if that makes sense to anyone besides me or if that really answers your question @crypticat, but it felt good to share my experience!

You get it. When I come home and see Crypticat it makes me happy to be home. The other day, I returned from vacation and couldn't pick up my cat right away because it was with a relative out of town. The house felt empty for a few days and we weren't as happy, I prioritized half a day to go get the cat.

I would not want to keep pets ... too much responsibility for me

Having no pets is a wise choice if you want to limit your responsibilities

I have some thoughts on both sides of this issue.

First, I'll give you the 'no pets' argument...
A friend of mine has some very extreme views on many subjects including that of pet-keeping. Her argument is that a pet is basically a slave to its owner.

While I do find her point over-the-top in its validity, I do think it has some things to think about. If you are keeping an animal in a cage (except for some very useful purpose - i.e. farming or conservation reasons), you are depriving them of their natural habitat.

For this reason, I really do hate many pet stores because they encourage animal collecting - I have to have such-and-such because its trendy, not because I want and understand the animal.

For me, a caged animal is no longer an option unless it fills those other requirements. (I will be keeping fish soon so that I can use them in aquaponics - i.e. to help me grow vegetables to eat.)

Saying that, there are plenty of people who cannot keep a dog or a cat due to apartment living, so fish, birds and rodents become their main options. In those cases, I would recommend having something that can be cuddled and appreciated outside of their cages. (My son had a rescued pet mouse at one point - he did love that thing and would carry it around with him in his pocket. The subsequent hamsters were nowhere near as friendly.)

The pro-pet arguments are many...
Teaching responsibility - for (supervised) children.
Lowered blood pressure in those who have a cuddly something to sit on their laps or whatever.
Giving a rescue animal a needed home and love.
Teaching/fostering unconditional love...

I think the reasons are many - I just don't want to see animals "collected" in order to be kept in cages... Neither do I like to see farm animals in pajamas or other ridiculous notions - again, there are reasons (i.e. a hairless animal or one who has had something happen to require assistance) but by and large a pet's natural fur/feather/whatever is more than adequate to cope with most of our conditions - and is actually hampered by adding fake coverings!

Sorry so long - I'm a writer, can't you see??? I almost decided to make this into its own post, in fact - may yet do... but not today.
(I have a fiction series you might like to check out when you get a chance.)

Great answer! Collecting animals isn't a nobel hobby. However keeping certain animals in a safe environment is probably better than leaving them in the wild in many cases. We are destroying most natural habitats anyways so may as well try to keep some of the animals alive.

I followed you and will check out your posts. Thanks for dropping by

I think having a pet is a good thing because you are never alone and you learn how to take care of something. This is especially important for ouer children.

Absolutely, kids should have pets

I think it is a good idea to keep a pet. Why? Because it's a win-win situation for you and the pet.

The reasons for this is:

  • You get a loyal, attentive partner
  • Based off of disabilities, you have someone to assist you
  • Upkeep is low, all they want is you
  • They get you tons of views on whatever platform you're on :)

  • The best part is you get to choose a pet or in some cases they come to your place and choose you. You make sure you're compatible with each other by your preferences so they'll most likely be seen as how they should be, family.

Pets are family and they do give you something to Steem about 😺

Different person have different opinion.. But i think, In your life a pet is needed... Sometimes when we feel like a piece of garbage or more like a weapon than a real person, we have to be nice to ourselves to remember how to feel human again. It's like taking care of a pet. we like cats, right? If we had a cat we would be buying it catnip and cat toys and fancy all-meat cat food and some kind of crazy deluxe cat bed. we had be petting it all the time, and brushing its fur out every day so it was all fluffy and everything, right? Even if we were feeling like shit we had take care of the cat, because that's just what we have to do when we have responsibility for an innocent animal that can't take care of itself.. So a pet is essential for our life..

Cats can take care of themselves (as long as they aren't locked inside) but prefer to have human staff. Pets are definitely a component of being human

Absolutely agree with you..@crypticat... I have a pet cat name lucy.... what's your cats name ???

    Elle

    Superb name....

brother I hope that your relationship with your pet is great and you can feel happy with her, pets are the most alive being as could have humanity have a golden and been the best in family we feel sastifecho and happy to have a pet so great and smart greetings @crypticat.

You have a Golden Retriever? Those are the best dogs for families

    Yes brother

It is very simple. Pets are a source of joy. We love them and care for them, and they love us unconditionally 😍
When we come back we don't find one of our family members waiting for us near the door, but our beloved pet 😁

Yes they are! I always find #crypticat waiting for me. Probably because there's a bag of treats by the door😻

I think the answer to your question is situation dependent. If you live an active life style then owning pets can be difficult regardless of if you want one or not. As you can't always take your pet with you on your activities and they certainly can't be kept home alone for days on end.

Positive Reasons to own a pet :

    • Company
    • learn responsibility to children
    • protection
    • Because having a pet is awesome !

    Potential Negatives :

    • Cost of feeding and maintaining them
    • Can be noisy
    • Cleaning up after them
    • You may have to cancel plans or miss life events because you can't find a dog sitter

I am sure there is more for each category but above is my short breakdown.

You're very rational and it's important to be if you want to have a pet. I wished more parents thought about it like you do. Unfortunately there is no test or application required to have pets or kids.

There are people who shouldn't be owners of any type of pet. Why own one if your not going to look after it. Most pets view their owners as their " masters " or leader. No need in mistreating an animal.

Definitely pro-pet around here! There are two cats, a dog and a fishtank here. But I am also in agreement that you shouldn't have pets unless you have the time and resources to take care of them; give them your time and attention. That's a commitment, and an important one! Pets are not "things" they are living feeling beings... you don't get to just "dump them somewhere" if you get tired of them!

    =^..^=

Wow, so many friends for a cat. Hope you all get along. Why would someone dump a pet on someone else? It's just not right and it shows poor character in most cases.

I would like to have a dog, but if I'm away at work, I'm worried the dog would be bored and lonely. Cats are okay but dogs would encourage me to step out and exercise more. And it's also a lot of responsibility to make sure the pet is healthy anyway, I'm not ready to make that jump...

I've toyed with the idea of a communal pet, one main owner but they let neighbors play with it and such, but that's a lot of trust needed to do

A communal pet? That may work in a village. Don't get a dog just to take walks, get one when you are ready. I hear some breeds are okay to leave laying around everyday by themselves, wouldn't do it myself.

So the most reasons for not holding a pet in my opinion are health issues and spare time. I don't need to explain, that there is no need of a pet, if it makes you sneeze the whole time, nor should you have a dog for example, if you're abroad the whole week.

But a pet creates a whole new environment in your space, new scents, new tasks, new duties. Pets are benefiting health development for the younger ones of us, teaching them responsibility and empathy.

Exactly, don't get a pet if it inconveniences you. If you have children, you're probably already inconvenienced and a pet will be good for their development.

We had a pair of baby rabbits kittens. They were very cute. We loved to see them wandering in the home, but as they grew old, they started to smash things all around the house. We had to get rid of them.

Cats and parrots are best to have as pets. They are easy to train. Parrots can be irritating sometimes, but most of the time you love them being around you.

Parrots are cool, I'd love a parrot friend and would get a bird. Do cats and birds get along though? The bird would have to be large enough to defend itself.

It could be a problem. Our cat was born in our house and we bought the parrots afterwards. They are used to each other's company/presence. They play together. Cat tries to catch the parrots with it's paws but never hurt them.

Pets are great.... Sometimes, they are the perfect companions, and don't come with all the hassles humans have!

    So true

"keep pets"? no, no! The cat keeps ME as its "human"

So true. I've read somewhere that cats domesticated humans. They only pretend to like us for an easy meal and their meows mimic the pitch of babies so we think they're cute. They also keep rodent populations under control allowing for easier storage of food.

Is this Spam? You didn't answer the question.

I myself can't keep any pets with fur because i am allergic.

but i could keep birds or fish or some other animals without fur.

i was actually thinking of getting a pet snake, but i have not decided yet.

Taking care of a pet is big work, and when i take a pet, even if it's fish.

I want to make sure i would know alot about the animal so I could take care of it very well.

Happy pet makes a happy human

Pets are work, but not very much compared to children or a full-time job 😸 but if you don't want to care for a pet you shouldn't get one. Most people aren't allergic to a cat's fur, they are allergic to a compound in the cats saliva which is spread onto the fur. There are hypoallergenic breeds out there. Please don't get a snake, they make lousy pets and after a few days it's no longer cool and the snake probably won't like you.

Ok thank you for the heads up.

And yes i looked into it and i am allergic to the compound in cats saliva.

But i am thinking that i am going to get fish as my pets.

You can try a hypoallergenic cat if you are interested. Siberians, Angoras, etc. Fish are great to raise too, just don't get too obsessed and end up with 4+ aquariums

I have 2 aquariums and I may easily end up woth more. You are right dangerous hobby for this reason.

I don't have a pet but my granddad and grandmom each had a cat in their houses while i was a kid. The funny thing though is, i used to talk to the cat and it responds sometime and sometimes it won't just answer me. It was fun then anyways but now too busy to keep pets. No one to take car of it.

Too busy for pets, but not too busy for Steemit, it's all about priorities. It's okay, pets need to be loved

@crypticat has set 1.100 SBD bounty on this post! logo_for-light-bg_1000.png
    What is a bounty exactly?

A bounty is money sent to a post to be distributed to the users commenting on it. It provides a way to reward users directly and works in addition to the steem/sbd they receive from the blockchain. It works independently of SteemPower.

You create a bounty by sending any amount of sbd/steem to @steem-bounty together with a post-url in the memo.

How can I earn a bounty Users are then competing for the bounty by writing their answers to the post in comments that will achieve upvotes from the community and especially the bounty creator. The money of the bounty gets distributed to all top level comments of the post at the same time when the post is paid out (7 Days after it was written). How much everyone gets depends on the votes the comments received. The sender of the bounties votes are weighted higher so that she decideds where 80% of the bounty money goes and all other votes determine the rest.

@steem-bounty does all of this for you automatically. You can use this service to automatically pay out a challenge, ask a hard question or simply to reward the people that interact with you.

Read more about how it works, even in different languages here.
