How do I Steem ... Tips for Beginners

in steem-help •  7 years ago

Yesterday I was at the second Steemit Meetup in Dublin. A great chance to put faces to a few names and get to meet some brand new Steemians in the flesh including one that has not joined up yet.

At the meetup there was a lot of talk about Steemit, Steem, Cryptocurrencies and the Interests and hobbies of the group.

The small group that gathered in the Duke Bar in Dublin city center included a Photographer, a Developer, 2 Models, an Artist and an Actuary. An interesting Mix and rather fitting to have the Duke as the meetup location, a meeting point for artists and writers for over a century.

A new type of writer met in the Duke yesterday for the first time, Steem Writers.

Steemit Apps

Some of those that gathered were new people to Steemit and were interested to hear how best to write and compose posts so I have put together here a few apps, and websites that I find useful when I am posting.

Read more about the meetup at Dublin Steem Meetup!.

Posting on Steemit

This post will be of interest to both new users of Steemit and veteran Steemians. I will share what works for me at the moment but if you have a better way of doing things and I would love to learn what works for you.

I generally use one set of apps when I am on my desktop at home and another set when I am on my phone out and about (or the couch).

My Favourite Apps/Sites

Other online editors I haven't tried but which look useful

How do I Steem?

At Home

I find it hard to write well thought out formatted articles on my phone. I usually wait till I am at my desktop at home.

Writing and Posting

The best tool I have found for writing is Steemwriter by @unipsycho. I write my articles on this then copy and paste the text to http://www.steemit.com to post.

Steemwriter is great because it lets you save drafts, export them and save code snippets such as taglines etc that you regularly use. You still need to write in markdown but it displays how what you have written in markdown will look after you post it side by side.

Commenting

I generally use the Steemit Website to comment on posts.

Browsing

  • Busy
To browse I often find myself back at the main site https://steemit.com/ but an alternative site that provides a different front end to Steemit posts is https://busy.org/. This site is much slicker than Steemit and lets you bookmark posts, select tags easier etc. This site is not an app but you access it through your webbrowser. It works great on my phone and my desktop.

On the Move

When I am on the move, I will generally upvote, comment but I usually save the writing till I am on my home computer. I prefer to take notes, photos and draft posts on a notepad and later transferring them to my computer.

On the move the Steemit website does not work great on my phone. It is a bit unstable for some reason and slow but there are some great apps that you can install on your phone that make the experience more enjoyable.

Writing and Posting

Some people have different writing styles and may prefer to post on the go. There are two great apps to make this experience better.

  • Steepshot
If you want to use Steemit like Instagram and post photos directly from your phone there is an app which you can download that makes this process really easy. Check out https://steemit.com/@steepshot for more info.
  • Esteem
This app by @good-karma lets you write, draft and post directly from your phone. There is also a desktop version. I haven't used the desktop version yet but I plan on trying it out.

Browsing and Commentating

  • Busy
As already mentioned to browse and vote I often find myself back at the main site https://steemit.com/ but an alternative site that provides a different front end to Steemit posts is https://busy.org/. This site is much slicker than Steemit and lets you bookmark posts, select tags easier etc. This site is not an app but you access it through your webbrowser. It works great on my phone and my desktop.

Promoting Posts

The hardest part to getting upvotes can be tackled by post promotion. Get your hard work out there for people to see.

  • Post links on Steemit Chat and Discord after you publish a new post.

  • Tweet about your post on Twitter using hashtag "#steemit"

  • Use the services of @randowhale, an account that lets get an upvote from a whale.

I used to also promote posts with SBD but I think I wont do that anymore. It helped for a while but the last few times I tried it, it didn't seem to have much impact and just cost me money.

Notification of Comments and Likes

It can be very useful to get notifications of mentions, votes and comments so you can engage with your readers in real time. The best app for this is Esteem by @good-karma

Obsessing about followers and votes

There are two great tools for this:

  • Steemdb
Steemdb by @jesta. Just add your name like https://steemdb.com/@eroche to see lots of stats, graphs and useful info about your account.
  • Autosteem
The Second tool is the app AutoSteem. This app is not just for autovoting. It also lets you analyse your followers, posts etc. There are many views on the left side which update with your details once you have logged the app into your account.

Thank you for reading this. I write on Steemit about Blockchain, Cryptocurrency, Travel and lots of random topics.

I would say be careful to post in the appropriate channels. Don't just spam #general or #price for example

Good point, as with tags and promotion, you need to keep it relevant.

Thanks for the tips eroche! I'm understanding more now but still not there about how the money works or why one day I up vote and I give nothing other times a give a penny or two and other times I give more I'm confused help!!🆘

You voting power is related to how much Steem Power you own. The more you have the more your vote is worth.

Also each time you vote you deplete your voting power. The more you vote the less your vote is worth. It regenerates over a few days.

Behind the payouts on posts is a complicated formula but basically depending on who has voted before you and how long since the post was made your vote may make the payout value jump more or less.

Thank you for the tips eroche I appreciate your time and you answering me I do up vote alot because I like so much stuff but now I'll be more careful I do love to resteem good stuff 😊🙃🙃😜😜

You can also change your vote percentage. So basically you still vote for a post but your voting power will be depleted less.

Thank you for the advice and for helping us newbies out much 😊 appreciated

Thanks eroche I'll look into that thinks for helping me and others who are new🌞🌞

You gave a very useful and valuable advice. I'm sure for many it will be interesting to read. I also use some points for myself. resteem

Thank you so much.

Thank you @eroche . This is very helful! While I "get" Twitter, FB, Instagram etc., I don't think I quite get how to post on/use Steemit yet!

If you have any questions I am happy to help you get started.

Thanks. I "resteemed" this so I have it for reference. Is there a way to "save" posts here?

Depends on which editor you use. If you use the editor on Steemit.com it automatically saves. If you close the browser then open it again the draft is there. You cant save multiple drafts, that is why I use steemwriter, using that you can save multiple drafts.

Thank you
