Here are some examples of what I cut and paste into my replies to comment spammers when I get them here at steemit or in the chats. I can't do a lot as a little minnow, but I do what I can.

Look up "how to comment at steemit" so you can learn what they like here. The big guys will crush you if the see this type of comment repeatedly. You need at least one sentence and it needs to say something specific about the post you are on. Three sentences is even better! Good luck :)

Yes it's not usually a problem. This bot checks all posts against internet search to check for plagiarism in the text.
So let's say you run a blog with a good post. you can't just copy paste the text here or you will get dinged. You have to quote it with markup which I do not know how to do. You need to include the link and paraphrase or quote. Same if you find something online you want to use here that is not yours.
I don't really have all the details of right and wrong about this since I usually write original content for my posts. In this case - I posted comments I had already used here - exact wording- so the cheetah got me.
This is to cut down spammers and if you get a bunch of cheetah hits - the big guys will come knock you down. But one or two mistakes is not a problem. That's why the message is nice. Most of us just made a mistake.

Normally I will ignore those follow me or upvote me type of comments... Sometimes I will visit their profile page to check them out... Sometimes it's just because these people don't know how to start a conversation or English isn't their first language... But sometimes they are really just spammers... I haven't flag or report or block anyone.. And I don't wish to do so too... At most I just unfollow if I happen to follow them the first place.

I do find the problem of new people on occasion, but I think here - it is bots for the most part. Although I do have a couple of people in steemit chat who send me their posts daily in pm's with no text lol.
I'm just happy to put an answer on the comment on my post so it does not just sit there. Hopefully the sadkitten type initiatives are ending most of the problem.

I haven't reported it, but @sadkitten and a few others are working to knock these schemes down. Apparently a lot of these spammers were working from connected accounts. You may have gotten upvotes from those at about 30 rep and voting at 2% power. They were just going to all new posts (throught bots) and upvoting all day long, I guess - farming money which did not amount to much anyway.

I have had very bad experiences of reaching out to people. As a new entrant i did not know how to exactly reach out for help so i used to send private messages and check and there were some very very nasty people who would comment with a foul abusive language.
If people do not wish to work with you they can just not respond but dont stoop down so low and hurt soneone.

Yes, the pm's do not work here. You need to write comments of about 3+ sentences that will make people be interested enough to check out your feed. This takes the effort of reading their posts and coming up with something thoughtful to say. I don't normally comment if I do not have a good point to make about the post. It is not easy here for sure :)

Hey there Shar....I mean @fitinfun. I feel as I've earned some sort of right to spam your ass! lol How have you been? What a great time we've had. That is great how systematic and efficient you are on the computer. You have to be the way you showed me you working it. So impressive. So I put four post today all promoting one another. One is even a video of me giving advice if you miss my voice :)

It sounds like you are refreshed. I've been sick since I saw you - I got on the antibiotics etc and I hope the worst is over. I'm glad you are working. I got going on twitter and I'm posting a lot of steemit posts there - yours too. Hopefully it helps and my traffic is way up so not complaining.

I don't know if you can succeed long term with "reaching out to only those with power on here and telling them to support me or I can't be spending my time on here." They will only jump once or twice for that comment. I think you have to engage with them so they are interested enough to support you. They've seen 1000's of content creators try and fail and they have not been moved.
I just saw a whale post basically saying "don't expect your good content to succeed here unless you get into chats and suck up to us." lol. Sadly, I have heard the "go into chats and kiss whale butt" advice a few times but so far I have not gone in them at all.
There are many people of 60+ here who are or would be fascinated by your travel posts without doing it for steemit - but for their own interest. If they know you are active by your comments on their posts, then they will come help you. It's a strange paradigm here.
A good group for you is also the "I want to leave the states, but I'm too scared" crowd. I see these comments on your posts frequently. Those people will definitely support you if they know you are showing them how to do it.
Make sure and comment to people you upvote and/or resteem and tell them you did it. This also drives traffic to your posts and FEW people take the time to make this type of comment.
I saw your posts getting better payouts lately - so maybe don't take my advice :)

Thanks for the advice. So my only complaint about steemit is that I was misled into thinking I can succeed on content alone. I need to reach out to the I want to leave the states crowed. You explained that as if there is a group on FB I can read directly or something. Guess what the moment I started making a stink to some whales, I've been getting regular up-votes by them. My new strategy is to only spend time socializing with whales. Not to say all the time hey support me or I'm out. But basically engage them and befriend them. Like you and I are now friends. I think I'm naturally pretty good at that. I didn't realize that is what I should have been doing all along. Watch my star rise over the next month. My plan is to go to that list of whales. on steemwhales.com and use it like a telemarketing call list. Then blast out like 4 good articles for them to choose to up-vote and resteem like every 5 days. Like what I just got done doing yesterday. Build whale relations is my strategy. Unfortunately, if you want to make money on a here, 2 cent up-votes are not going to do it. I'll just play the game that has been created.

One more perspective with what i just wrote with a positive twist. All these whales are basically a bunch of wealthy people looking for friends and attention, after all this a social media platform. I like making friends with wealthy people in real life, they are full of connections and generosity often. So my new perspective is quite positive. Make friends with wealthy people, and people in general always find me interesting and want to be my friend. so I think I'll do alright.

Well, yes, that is definitely always a good plan - hang out with the winners. This is why my filter is set high for the posts I go to. I will help little people with my votes when I am big - now is not that time.
I'm getting good action on Twitter with my new steemer friends - so I'm working that for a few days hard to see what comes of it. More non-steemers are rting my steem posts by far! Very unexpected.
I've got about 30 steem tweets a day now and the action is pretty good. I'm tweeting my posts and whatever I upvote. Everyone gets 5 days of tweets :)

This is a smart idea so you can just copy/paste. I usually just ignore spammers. I did flag a few but they got mad and retaliated and flagged me back. Spammers are like toddlers who throw temper tantrums when caught being bad. I hope someday they do an update to punish spammers and abusers of the system.

I do not want to flag! I am not that type of person at all. I will report people and block them but never go against them on any platform. I have a lot of experience with haters and blocking works the best for me - but you can't do that here. I thin ka lot of these were bots anyway now that I read about sadkitten.

Don't feel bad on one of my early posts I talked this this really nice guy for over 3 hours. That was kind of what led me to working with some of the advanced steemit tools really. I think for what you are doing and building the fossbot would help automate some of your tasks and give you more time to chat with people and do what you do best. The guy that built it is super helpful @personz. But I set it up just by following the walk-through guide. It took about 2 hours to read everything and deply my first steemit bot. It is a curation bot mainly but it can also be set to look at people on your white list. @personz might also build a config if enough people are interested so that it only follows your whitelist and upvotes them...kinda like a private trials bot. Really cool. I might be able to build you one and then if you had a heroku account give it to you for free. I'll look into it just incase you or someone else wants one. After I do it a few times It might become a service I could offer through SteemThat.com.

Hello Sharon! On Steemit, people usually run after Steem Power And Steem Dollars. So, you are totally right about the fact that they run after upvotes, comments and followers. I believe this is a very basic post that addresses a very common issue. Moreover, with more people signing up for steem -- this issue will become even more horrendous.
