❓ Answering Common Questions: How can I explain voting simply to others? ☑️

in steem-help •  7 years ago

What exactly happens when I vote on something?

How does this affect what's in my wallet?

I came across a post by @rival asking for a simple explaination on how voting works on here. So I figured I could lay it out better in a post rather than a comment. If anyone finds they are lacking a guide on something...feel free to mention it in the comments. I'll get it added to my to-do list.

Q: What exactly happens when I vote for somebody on Steemit?

The short answer is that you show support for the content and/or the author of a post or comment.

The slightly more in depth answer is that you give them some money towards their payout. (I'll cover how much this is below.) On top of this, you can earn some money yourself with that is called curation rewards.

You'll never see a message saying "You've run out of votes," meaning you really can do this as much as you want. However, we do have a vote power percentage (I'll explain more below) that as it drops you give and receive (from curation) less money from your vote.

Q: Does my vote actually take money from my wallet to give it to others?

THIS IS THE BEAUTY OF STEEMIT...YOU PAY NOTHING TO PAY OTHERS!!

At least this is the short answer. But, unlike how you'd think of a tip...you don't have anything come from your wallet when you vote. Instead, your vote determines how much of the "Daily Reward Pool" is to be given towards that post or comment.

Yes, having new money printed each day does slightly effect what Steem/Steem Dollars we already hold, but let's just keep this simple.

Q: How much money do I give with my vote?

This is primarily determined by how much Steem Power you hold. That's why you see explanations for Steem Power referring to 'influence' on the site. The more you hold, the more your vote is worth.

I'll cover a few other pieces that can effect this voting below (but you don't have to get that in depth when explaining to others.)

Q: You said I earn some money from voting...how does this work?

When a post pays out (after 7 days) a cut up to 25% can be paid to the people who voted on it. Who gets what of this curator cut depends on how much their vote was worth, when they votes, and how many people voted before them.

I can provide more details on these parts if you want...but when explaining it simply to others, I'd just leave it here.

Q: You said I could vote as much as I want...but how much money I give (and get from curation rewards) goes down. How does this work? And keep it simple.

We all have a statistic called vote power percentage. Every time we cast a vote, this percentage goes down. However, it also regenerates at a rate of 20% per 24 hours (or about 1% an hours.) Those of us that like keeping their vote power high (I try to stay about 75%) try to vote less than 10 full votes per 24 hours.

Brand new users can only cast votes at 100%...it's pretty all or nothing. But once you reach about 500 Steem Power, you'll get a slider bar that lets you choose to give partial votes to people, meaning you give less, but can make more votes.

Let's break this down into a couple short examples.

Example 1: Effects on Vote Power %
Let's say your vote power % is at 100%.

  • Let's say you cast your 100% for somebody and it give $1.00. This makes your vote power percentage go down by 2% to 98%.
  • You then cast another 100% vote for someone else...it gives $0.98. Why? Because you're vote power percent was at 98%.
  • After casting these two Full votes, your vote power is at 96%...so the next full vote you cast gives $0.96 and so on.

If you stopped vote after the two votes, you would see your vote power regenerated back up to 100% in about 4 hours.

So you can vote as much as you want, but there is a limit to how much you can give with your votes.

Thank you clearing that up. It seems that after HF19 individuals became more cognizant of their voting patterns. Instead of gleefully voting for everything, they are more self aware of the impact on both voter and voted so that there is more thought being placed into it thus rewarding value to the individual author. All of this in the hopes of creating more value to a stronger community.

Happy to help! And I totally agree!

Between having few votes (compared to the regen rate) AND our votes meaning so much more...people are starting to be more picky on where they cast them. This really is a very good thing! I really hope it helps to get those better pieces better rewarded.

Since I joined after the new rules were in place, I don't know any other voting system. My first day here, I hadn't gotten read about voting yet, so figuring it was like other platforms, in my extremely zealous pursuit of everything new and shiny I up voted myself silly, which meant going down to 15%. As you know, that affected me deadly for the next couple of days. I wish I had read this then, but young minnows will make mistakes and live and learn, right?

Oh definitely! It's important to just have fun...which often means upvoting so many of the great things on here!

It gets a LOT easier to manage when you unlock the vote slider bar at about 500 Steem Power. This lets you choose how much of a vote you give out..meaning you can instead of 10, 100% votes give:
20 - 50% votes
40 - 25% votes or
1000 - 1% votes :)

I'm still getting used to the new balance myself however..so definitely don't let it add stress. :)

You would think something like that would be setup in reverse, since a new minnow is likely to explore more and find all the hidden gems that are buried deep in the hollows. To go beyond the new, hot and trending in their search for all that is new and exciting in their newly discovered land. Voting on more since they are being exposed to more. Once they have their sea legs and have a better understanding and appreciation of their new environment, then they can make more of an impact on what truly moves them.

Q: What exactly happens when I vote for somebody on Steemit?
The short answer is that you show support for the content and/or the author of a post or comment.

Excellent post & very informative tuto as always my dear @sykochica. And for the occasion, I can't help it but take advantage of this post to also attract your attention to my last article & contest to watch you exercising exemplarily your goodwill maneuvers and the exact teachings you are giving away here. :)

On other hand, I'm still missing your presence among my followers. Still can't see your name over there. But yeah, I know I am kind of an outcast character to follow, but anyway I will await patiently for such a highly appreciated deference. LoL

Meanwhile, this post got my upvote and resteem to educate furthermore my handful of followers.

What?!?! I swear I've followed you 3 times already!! Rofl!
Go look now so you see that I have done this..that way if it magically 'drops' the follow, you know it's not because of me. Lol

I'm taking a look at your post now. :)

Hahahaha, finally dear, now I can see your name among my followers. I bet the magically drops in your following must be the actions of that massive bunch of jealous bots keeping an Eye too close on you trying to keep you away from falling in love with the Pink Attired Cranky Gandalf. LoL

Haha...at least you saw that I did it! Please let me know if it does magically drop it again.

I love your posts and u would be perfect meember of Steemit Team Africa s a western person who adopts a Steemit user froom affrica!
And soon we will be as happy as this little robot! And we will keep the envy bots away!

Haha, such a cute little robot! :D

Thank you! I'm happy to help where I can in general and towards the Team Africa. I do have to be careful right now though, since my days have already been extremely full lately. I can get burnt out if I'm not careful.

Awesome!! Thank you!!
Feel free to request any guides you'd like made up. :)

this post really helped me to understand why my amounts were lessening! It had been bugging me for days lol thank you for explainjng in a way that I can understand.

Hehe, more than happy to help!

Always feel free to ask questions if they come to mind. :)

very nice post, answered some of my questions.
I have one complicated question though, suppose, I want my upvoting worth of $10, ow much Steem power would I be required.
Another question, I see my steem power as "5.172 STEEM
(+27.553 STEEM)", what is with and without brackets?

It does vary on how much a certain amount of SP gives relative to dollars...Steem Price in dollars being the big one. So right now, I'd say about 15,000 SP would give close to $10 with a full vote at 100%..maybe a bit more.

The number in the brackets is SP that's been delegated to you. New users get that from a Steemit Inc account and is a temporary thing. You don't actually own it, but you reap the benefits while it remains delegated (i.e. you're vote give more $.) When the delegation is ended..it will return to the account that did that for you.

Wonderful, thank you so much for answering my questions, the best reply I have received so far.
KUDOS to you!

Hehe, more than happy to help out. Always feel free to ask me questions :)

Yeah sure, I have noticed some of the big guns (not all) here don't even bother to reply, they are just worried about getting more and more wealth on this platform, leaving all newbies alone in the ocean.
@allasyummyfood used to reply regularly to her followers and this is something motivates newbies to continue using this platform.
I hope you don't need the list of those Dolphins and Whales who never care about their followers :)

I can understand...on both sides of the coin.

But I do try to reply to everything, though I haven't been fully able to on the 'great post' sort of things with the 20 second comment timer being in place. But all the rest..I really try to. Though admittedly I have days I do miss things, but those aren't often luckily. :)

Atleast you try and this is what we want.
Keep up the good work!

Another great post. You are my Steemit encyclopedia.
Question: when I upvoted you why did your payout decrease?
From $67.06 to $67.00

That was probably a combination of the Steem Price that's fluctuated in the last few days as well as other votes being cast that dilute things a bit. It was definitely nothing that you did...every vote is still helpful. :) TY!

So much to learn. You must have totally immersed yourself into Steemit before you got your day job to be so well-informed. A maybe you just that smart!!!

Hehe...I completely immersed myself into Steemit for a long time. I'm still learning things. But it's definitely interesting trying to balance it all with the new job. :)

I would imagine that is got to be rather difficult also. Don’t Burn yourself out.

I bookmarked this @sykochica just in case.
I also thank you for the support you are giving me.

Thank you for illuminating the voting process; I must confess to a little confusion relating to this topic, although I have been here for almost a year!! I'll check out your other posts too!!

Keep on STEEMING!!

This is the most informative and most valuable article ...hats off to you ...Thank you to guide us

Very good and simple explanation !

Thanks for the post @sykochica

Very informative. Up voted and resteemed

Enough theory ... Now show us some examples .. like mmmm .. What happens when you upvote this comment ?? ;)

The most informative article..Thank you sir

I had questions about voting thanks you answered what I needed.

I'm happy to be helpful! :D

Very informative... and here I was just spamming the upvote button.. But i guess that's okay cuz im under 500 SP right?

It's really quite ok for anybody to do if that's what they want. Once effect for you is that you're probably not able to give a penny with your vote while a bit under 30% voting power (I took a peak here: https://steemd.com/@itachi).

But it does get easier to spread the votes around once you do get that slider at about 500 SP. (I've heard talk of this being reduced to 125 SP in the future..which would be a good things in my opinion.)

That was a great article easy to understand thank you. Mike

Great post!

Thanks
Very educational

@sykochica, you rock! Thanks for breaking it down and splainin' it so well!

Thank you! :D blush

awesome article , thanks for sharing
VoteUp & Followed you for more content :) good job keep steeming

Thanks for explaining this in details @sykochica!

Thanks for this post @sykochica I resteemed it for my humble amount of followers :)

I also have a question that is puzzling me.
What is the best size for your first picture in your post ?
The one that will show up on the left of your post.
I would love the answer to that since most of the time 20-30 % of the picture is gone missing.
This way it is not giving a good impression of the picture.

Thanks in advance if your willing to explain this :)

This is so helpful, thank you so much.

Thank you for this! I knew some of the things already but some of these questions I had myself.

Absolutely! I love helping my fellow Steemians! :D

Glad there are people like you to help us newbies out! :)

Thanks for enlightening us on certain voting queries!

wow. this is a great post. Thank you always.

Thank you! I'm more than happy to be helpful. :)

Hello mike here I did a post a few days ago about saving in my wallet I didn't get any replys as to where the money goes any help would be very helpful thanks mike

Hi Sykochica , its only my second day on steemit and so much to learn, just wanted to say thanks for the explanations in your posts and for taking the time to help us minnows :)

HolySmoke! ... Great Info... I really needed to find this Post... RESTEEMED SykoCHIcA

Thank you. I always come back to your post to find answers to my questions. 🐓🐓

Thank you for making a post of my question. I guess Its impossible to explain in few short words.

It would have just come across as a wall of text, making it seem more daunting in my eyes. Just being able to break things up in the post makes it easier. But yea, there are a few pieces I felt needed to be included, because in my experience, there are common follow up questions people ask. So I wanted to get those included for you. :)

I understand, and i really like it that you took the question from a minnow like me and took the time to answer it. I think it would help a lot other to explain things more clear and that steemit can grow. And I hope to make my once in a lifetime dream trip in year 2019 to the US. Keep posting :-)

I love answering questions from minnows..it's really a big part of what I've done on here for a long time. Feel free to ask whatever. :)

I have written a few dozen of these guides/faqs which are listed at the bottom of these posts...if any may be helpful. But it's especially important that you all are able to talk about it simply and comfortably with others. While there is a lot that can be learned about the site..often the basics are more than enough to get going...to make it way less daunting. :)

Oh nice!! I definitely hope you're able to make it to the US! Best of luck! :D
