First question that comes to mind when looking at a new place

Followed by my brother calling me a nerd directly after the thought. :P
What can you do, once you go fiber you don't wanna go back. ^^

You just can't go back, a very valid concern when looking at somewhere new!!!

Indeed. ^^

Well, next best thing to it is 4G. Infrastructure is probably faster to setup from telco point of view.

Yeah its faster to set up, but the latency is just bleh usually. :P

Yes, one bus too many people get on will have this issue.

I do not have fiber connection but using my smartphone as hotspot wifi to connect the internet. Ha...ha.. by the way @acidyo, I just realize that upvote and leave comment manually more enjoyable, but I still use steemvoter and streemian to help upvote task.. :)!

Hehe, I remember when I had 4G, playing online games would just make you depressed with the latency. :P

We have fiber at our office and it is glorious! Our cable went down all of the time, but the fiber has been very reliable!

It feels as fast as the speed of light. ;)

What speed are you running up and down?

200mbit download and 50 mbit upload.

oh wow! That is quick! We have 100 up and down and it seems to work well!

That's more than enough. ^^

It seems really hard to get a faster upload speed here in Finland, but its not like I upload big stuff that often.

It is more than enough for sure!

Does the network of fiber in a given area determine the speeds? My friend got fiber in his area in California and he said it was slower than cable but might have been due to the fact that the fiber network in his area wasn't extensive. Which made me confused because I always thought fiber to be faster than cable.

Hmm, it definitely should be faster, although they put speed limits here depending on what sort of subscription you have. But the most costly thing is if there is no fiber to begin with and they have to specially dig the lines to you, that's why its important to know if the building you consider moving into has it installed from before or not.

A friend of mine did it recently for his house and it cost him over 2500$ for the installation.

We had it installed at our office! It took a while for it to get installed after going back forth with the association talking about an easement of 3 feet. Luckily the company installed it on their dime and not ours! They said it was around $25,000 for the distance they need to string it..

DAMN!

Yeah I know! But they have the only pipe in our complex for fiber! They said that it would be paid off in about 5 years depending on how many of our of neighbors they get!

I might have misunderstood him when he was explaining it. I think it was the subscriptions he had. I did know about the high cost of running the fiber. Im on on cable right now but I definitely want to make the switch to fiber. Thank you for the clarification.

It shouldn't be that expensive once you have it running - its mostly the installment.
