I have an unloaded Pistol, one backup food supply (beef jerky), and I ate some berries earlier today. I choose Option 1.

If we stay near the town for a while anyway, then I might as well look around and see if I can find something useful in the dirt. I'd be weary of lifting the board, as there's no telling what creepy crawleys might be hiding under there.
