Is There Any Way To Block Someone?

in steem-requests •  8 years ago  (edited)

Just wondering the functionality of mute

What if my abuser shows up on this site? How can I block him? This is a very serious issue. For some it could become a matter of life or death. Has anyone considered this possibiility?

We need that right away

It will hide their posts from you. Everything is on the block chain. Right now that feature isn't doing more than tracking your request.

I just muted bangking to test out the button. For the TEST only and his posts still showed up.

I'm sorry, I didn't clarify properly: I only muted you so I could understand how the mute button worked.
I immediately un-muted you afterwards.

I know there is a mute button. I was asking about the mute button's functionality.
Does it hide my info from them, or is it just so I can't see them?

I assume the mute button will eventually hide the account's posts and comments from you so that you don't have to see them. But as you already figured out through testing, it isn't actually functioning yet.

Regarding hiding your info from them, it is technically impossible to hide your public information from a stalker. All the posts and comments are on the public blockchain. So no matter what the steemit.com GUI does, a stalker could get access to that information very easily. I think providing users with a false sense of privacy is far more dangerous than not providing any (illusions of) privacy at all. So I don't think steemit.com should make it appear like they can hide a user's posts/comments from some other user that wants to see them.

That means it is very important for each user to keep this in mind before posting any information in a public forum. Don't post any information in public if the benefits of posting do not justify the risks of that information being used by bad people to hurt you.

lol i just read it again and deleted my comment.

that's the second time i've encountered mansplaining. rant over.

I misread and thought you were requesting for a mute button. I was trying to help and showed you that steem has one. This is a huge misunderstanding.

I just muted you just for a test you're still showing up, so I think I answered my own question. I guess the blocking feature will probably arise when some victim gets assaulted here. There should be a way to prepare for this inevitability though. I immediately unmuted you after the test. No worries.

I was wondering the same thing. Can we block people on here? I already have some asshole bothering me.

you can use the mute button.

yea...
But the person could still your post and comment..
And other people see they're comments...
VERY VERY Annoying

i endorse the idea, but i assume there are bound to be limitations.

Maybe a ghost button that makes the two people invisible to each other. If you press the ghost button, you sever ties between each other. This way stalkers and predators can't target their victims.

Block is needed urgently.

no shit!

If you mute me, will I be able to see you on Steemit.com? I was having a conversation with somebody and now I cannot go that post now. It seems they blocked me with the mute button. I do not if the mute button actually hides you from the person you mute or not.

From what I know about Steemit and blockchains I think it is basically impossible to properly implement a block. Everything you've posted is public information on the blockchain and can be read by others. The implementation of "mute" in the Steemit web app is just a convenience for users. They could implement a block as a convenience but it would only work on the Steemit website and could be easily thwarted by someone using multiple identities and other ways to browse the Steem blockchain.

Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong in that.

That said, I understand your desire to have this - it is sad that so many folks need to hide behind anonymity these days to protect themselves from dangerous and deranged stalkers who can't control themselves in public (or private I'm sure).

Most of the people harassing others are too stupid to continue harassing them if they are unable to do it through the steemit gui. I do think block would be a great thing. Mute is nice, but there are also annoying people that you'd prefer not to be able to see your posts. It would also help alleviate the situation where someone decides to be a dick and flag all of someone's posts. If the person was blocked they would not be able to see someone's posts on the Steemit GUI and flag them.

Good point about flaggers. I will say that I know a fair number of people who use multiple identities to make Steemit posts (either to try and attain some anonymity, or to cheat the up-voting system). On the mobile apps it is relatively trivial to flip between them.

At the moment Steemit has a relatively small user community in the few hundred thousand range. Although I think proportionately we might have a few more "fringe" users than elsewhere we don't seem to be anywhere near the absolute huge numbers of "dicks" that tens of millions if not hundreds of millions of users would bring.

Too many dicks - that pretty much sums up many problems in life :-(

what if they flag you and keep flagging you cause assholes should be away to block them.

Exactly same happening with me. Some assholes repeatedly flagging posts for no apparent reason

I think you can block someone on busy.org but I haven't tested it yet because I have no problems so far.
