Sometimes you build something for one purpose and the market takes it and uses it in a way that you never expected. When this happens we are left with a choice of fighting the market or embracing the unexpected. For the past month or more the Steem Sports posts have been garnering a large portion of the reward pool. This is neither good, nor bad, but simply a reflection of what the majority of the voters want to do.
Disclaimer
That said the current interface on steemit.com is not well suited to the application. A much better interface would allow people to simply "click" to cast their vote and would have a simple interface for funding a bet. Their wallet would allow them to view the current status of all bets they have cast.
Meanwhile the Steemit.com bloging infrastructure would filter these kinds of posts into their own dedicated section to make the main page more appealing to those looking for content to read.
Should we Support Steem Sports
As a community we should either embrace this market segment or actively choose to downplay the these posts. If we were to embrace it, then STEEM would morph into more of an entertainment platform that could attract sports fans from around the world. While this could be a huge opportunity it does come with some risks.
Placing bets on sports is much riskier from a regulatory perspective; however, doing so with a virtual currency almost makes it a pure game that keeps score with virtual points. Under the current Steem Sports set up the posters are taking the risks. If we were to customize our interface to support this use case then we would end up taking slightly more risk.
Custom Blockchain Support
The current implementation of Steem Sports has a lot of rough edges:
- most of the payout is held in VESTS of poster
- participants must trust the poster and his algorithm
- the interface isn't well suited
- posts are not well indexed / sorted / displayed for users
- posts use unreasonable portion of reward fund
- posts spam those not interested in sports
I would propose that the blockchain add native support for the Steem Sports use case and make the entire process as trustless as possible. This would involve adding a new custom post type with custom rules for dividing results.
- Anyone can create a new sporting event, just like anyone can post
- Anyone can vote for an outcome and upvote the event at the same time
- Voting for an outcome is economically equivalent to betting with an amount equal to
post_reward * vote_rshares / total_vote_rshares
- Anyone can fund their vote with additional money
- After the event is over, the losers can concede voluntarily and receive a small reward for conceding.
- Those who do not concede voluntarily get no consolation reward when a decisions is ultimately rendered
- In the event of a dispute, witnesses can vote on the winner.
The idea with these rules is that a rational loser will concede and receive his consolation reward rather than risk his consolation reward in the hope that he can manipulate the voters. The winners would never concede because they would give up their real reward. A dispute would be easy to identify by looking at the ratio of concessions from both sides. As long as the community actively polices abuse attempts few will attempt abuse.
Benefits to On Chain Solution
Under this approach the system would be self governing and distributed. The rewards could be paid in full immediately after payout. The market would automatically identify the events that are most interesting and the blockchain would subsidize the rewards.
A new kind of Market - Negative Rake, 0 cost Sports Betting
Where else on the internet can you bet on sports and win money without having to put a dime of your own money on the line? Where else can you have a guaranteed edge in a series of 50/50 bets?
Auger may be doing it all wrong. We don't need full fledged prediction markets with all the complexity involved. We just need a simple, fun, no-cost betting system.
Does this fit within the Scope of Steem?
If Steem is a blockchain designed to distribute currency as rewards for user participation and encourage growth of a social network, then I think we could easily argue that Steem Sports fits. Sporting events drives discussion and betting puts people's skin in the game. The effect of the bets would be to generate useful market odds for observers. Demand to increase individual bets would drive SBD purchases and STEEM token value.
Further Work
There are many additional variables that could be considered. A portion of the rewards should go to the person who started the bet. It might even be sufficient to allow this individual to be the de facto judge rather than the witnesses. Only the most trustworthy individuals would get upvoted and those who cannot be trusted to judge the outcome the right way would earn negative reputation and no longer be able to earn rewards by starting new events.
In general I think the simplest possible solution can enable a wide range of fun games and might just tap a huge market that is currently unaccessible to Steem.
What are your thoughts?
DISCLAIMER: this post does not originate from angry or bitter feelings, as I believe Ricardo and the steemsports team have been doing a great job and I have a very good personal relationship with him (after some initial misunderstandings.) :-)
To the best of my knowledge, I have been the first person to offer an upvote-based bet on Steemit. I wrote this post over three months ago https://steemit.com/steemit/@claudiop63/steembets-bet-for-free-by-upvoting-and-win-steem-dollars-inauguration-bet-clinton-vs-trump
You will notice that its URL and content seem unrelated to each other...the reason is that originally the post's content was about a bet on the Clinton vs Trump race. The post got flagged by @smooth for "vote buying". I then felt that this was a strong warning from the community that vote-based bets were not in the spirit of Steemit, so I changed the content of the post (since I did not want to waste the promotion money I had invested) and forgot about my project on vote-based betting.
A few weeks later, Ricardo started steemsports, and to my surprise, he had gotten the explicit backing of several whales. His project then developed nicely. At some point, I created the steembets account, but never managed to unlock its potential, so I sold it a few days ago.
Why am I recalling all this? In order to claim ownership of the vote-based betting idea? Not at all... :-)
I am talking about this because this is a background to my proposal below, which aims at fostering the emergence of new ideas on Steemit in a "smooth" way (unintentional joke) :-)
Since the SP distribution in the community is still very uneven, and a few people hold strong "moral suasion" power, it might be useful to promote a "new projects" tags in order to allow innovative and potentially controversial projects, such as vote-based betting, to be put forward and collect community feedback. This would enable creative people to get some credit and visibility for their ideas, while reaching some sort of preliminary consensus on whether or not the key people in the community would support the project, mitigating the risk that projects which are similar to each other generate different flagging patterns....
Once again, I congratulate Ricardo for his success, and I look forward to disclosing on Steemit an innovative project of mine in the next few weeks, and seek community feedback...

Although I am not a fan about Steem Sports, it surely brings attention and engagement and consequently provides some value to Steem. However, IMHO, Steem Sports should solve two major problems.
As @dantheman pointed out too much VESTS are going to @steemsports as fees. It earned 217 MVESTS (while it vested under 100 STEEM) since its beginning. In percentage, probably around 37.5% will go VESTS. Additionally, around 10% is kept as writer's payment and development fund. So in total betters spend about 50% as a fee. (if we consider curation reward, around 35% as a fee)
Odd ratio is too low. Some users complained that it is not exciting as much as expected, since the payout was very low, usually under $1. I think simple binary betting is not a good way for sports betting. Instead, combination of multiple binary betting, or score-based betting can be used.

Steem Sport is taking a large portion of the rewards pool right now because they have very little competition as a STEEM distribution blog. As other STEEM distribution blogs like @thegame @bola @steemit-health come along and incentivizes users to participate in their blog for a portion of the rewards, we will see users migrate from "sports betting" to STEEM distribution activities in their field of interest.
Blogs are now realizing that they can share their rewards with users, incentivizing them to participate in any type of activity. This is why I started @steemit-health. Once we have 10 activities a day that distribute STEEM to the health community, people who are interested in health stuff (more than sports betting) will migrate from Steem Sports to Steemit-Health.
And this is good for Steem Sports as well. Once there's competition between STEEM distribution blogs in many different fields, Steem Sports will be left with true sports fans, which will make it a lot easier for them to package and sell their users' attention to companies that want to advertise to sports fans.

I've been running a pretty healthy alternative to the SteemSports games. I have a smaller audience, but the payouts are much larger for the winners and my cut is mostly limited to the SP award. It's not a "distribution" game, per se, but it does distribute and I have a loyal group of players/sports enthusiasts. Competition is good, so I'll be looking at new ways to expand what I'm doing and will take some of @dantheman's ideas into consideration if I do decide to branch out.

Nice, I was thinking if anyone has been doing SP distribution on something more participatory than left/right betting. But in any case, I like Steemsports for its simplicity (not sure about value though since i'm not into sports). Will check out @steemit-health. Actually would be interesting to see this model for external curation!

Let me know what you think! @steemit-health is experimenting with two different distribution models right now, one activity where all participants receive an equal share of STEEM and one activity where all participants are entered into a lottery. - It's a very soft launch right now but I think it has potential.

Yes the distribution style is different, but it's still distribution. Right now, I'd guess that the vast majority of users participating in Steem Sports are not very interested in sports betting at all, but they are very interested in acquiring more STEEM in exchange for their attention.
Each field of interest, whether it be health, sports, fashion, music, technology, etc. will develop blogs that have their own distribution model that suits their audience.
My point is, that once there are second level (blog level) STEEM distribution options in many different fields of interest... new users will come to Steemit and find additional rewards in the fields they what, rather than all piling onto Steem Sport.
ps. I think Steem Sports is great;)

I upvote every steemsports post and place my bet. And I'm kind of disgusted at myself for that because I only do it for fear of missing out. I don't like the direction it has been taking steemit in the last month or two.
When I first joined steemit VOTE-BUYING was highly frowned upon. Yes, they redistribute the liquid rewards. But the reason this activity was originally downvoted was because the community didn't want to push the platform into a direction that would make us look like a niche that doesn't attract the masses. If steemit becomes a "gambling" website we are doomed to that particular market alone. If the blockchain accommodates those kind of posts but doesn't reward them with SP, then maybe that could work. But as it is, I see the community digging itself into a hole that months ago we said we wouldn't dig. Just because sports is more attractive than lottery or other types of vote-buying posts, this particular genre was encouraged and even those who don't like the idea (such as me) will support it in order to prevent myself from falling behind...
Steemsports and vote buying doesn't encourage any participation or quality. And in order to make steem(It) appear legitimate to the masses we need to be encouraging quality, not quantity. Steemit currently refuses to take one direction and make a name for itself.
It's not a social network it's a blogging platform
For that matter, it's not a gambling site or a porn site.
Currently the landing page says "Welcome to the Blockchain". Why not reach out to the most viable demographic and call it a Blogchain?
Welcome to the Blogchain
Why not? Because we want to reach everyone not just a demographic? Totally unrealistic. Nothing ever gets adopted that way. Facebook started with university students. Perhaps there could be a gambling platform on the blockchain, or better yet a different blockchain! Or perhaps there could be steemporn. But if you think those things can be on steemit mixed in with the smoothie blogs and travel blogs and everything else, then we aren't ever going to get anywhere because we aren't taking any direction.

I should clarify I've worked in a bookies and do enjoy sports and betting (though I'd never work in one again because of the amount of addiction I witnessed). My issue is mainly with the lack of direction. I fear that if steemit takes a direction that is inconceivable to most people (free Money for free bets) then that will forever be how it will be associated and we will lose our opportunity to present a platform or financial insurance system that people can believe in.
People don't buy what you do they buy why you do it.

Although Apple has marketed on the basis of "resisting the status quo" in the past, I don't see it much now as opposed to the "our products are better" message. First of all, steemports is not just gambling. Every single post is also blogging, with a writer who writes about the the game, the players, etc.
Second, I'm pretty sure that sports and gambling are bigger markets than personal blogging. I don't think being inclusive of different types of content is a bad thing nor impossible (especially with better tools for organizing and filtering), but if hypothetically we did have to choose, I'd probably choose the bigger market over the smaller one. As an investor/stakeholder, why shouldn't I?

The key here is that this is an ecosystem that is worth more together as a network than on its own.

You invested in Steem token not Steemit token. Each company has multiple teams (which sometimes are working on the same engine), but another idea should not always be incorporated in the most well known product of a company. Youtube is still a Youtube, not a Google Video.
Of course, one product of a company can/should promote another products in a common ecosystem, but this not mean, that those two products has to be merged for ever.
As a investor you should remember about diversity. If Steemit.com will fail, I would prefer to have still SteemSports.com thriving, but if SteemSports will fail, I do not want to see Steemit taken down together with it.

They're all using the same blockchain and therefore drawing from the same pool of content. If Steemsports switches its primary interface to steemsports.com, the posts will still appear on Steemit.com. Steemit.com is a view of the blockchain, it is not a separate platform with its own content.

Of course, but why would you do that on a leaderboard of the highest payout posts (which is what the badly-named "Trending" represents)? Steemit.com can offer a different home page with whatever sort of filtering rules, and indeed I think the biggest problem with this platform is people can't filter and display what they want. You can't even look at one person's blog without seeing resteemed posts, nor can you look at posts with one main tag without seeing posts using the same tag as a secondary. The entire organization is terrible. But this has very little to do with Steemsports, which are not only games but also (sport-oriented) blog posts BTW, so it isn't even clear to me how that would be categorized if it were possible. Some other game posts are more clear though.

Actually it isn't gambling at all. I lose nothing at all if I lose the bet. I might even still get a curation reward. It's nothing but vote buying. As for the analysis of the game - that could be rewarded for the writing without the vote buying included.
Sure you could choose the bigger market of sports fans. But this type of content encourages no participation whatsoever. It's nothing but a free bet. So you can invest in a platform that gives away free money for zero participation but in the end, that's a much harder sell than "blog for rewards". Why would bigger investors see a platform dedicated to giving away free money for zero work as a legitimate investment.
If that's what steem is going to be forever associated with, because it's the biggest most highly rewarded thing on the blockchain, then I doubt we'll ever be taken seriously.

Speak for yourself. I take steemsports seriously as generally well-written sports content that engages sports fans with a fun game (as you say, not really gambling) that offers daily prizes. A way to earn and distribute cryptocurrency (the latter being the original purpose for the site after all) that doesn't require being in the narrow group of successful content creators. To me that is all very serious, and potentially very successful.

I didn't say people wouldn't take steemsports seriously. I'm talking about a blockchain that gives away free bets for nothing.
I believe that the original purpose of the site was not just to distribute cryptocurrency, it was to be a financial insurance system - stakeholders paying to financially support projects or people who need or deserve the rewards. For people to take steem(it) seriously, in my personal opinion, there needs to be a purpose - not just profit and distribution - that doesn't make sense to people and as suggested in my reply to dantheman, it's a result, not a purpose. Free money for free bets will just never sell because it makes no sense. Earn money for blogging and creating and adding value (to the platform or otherwise) that makes sense and excites people. Free money for free bets might entice people to check out the website skeptically, but as soon as they see that it's a "steem" dollar it would be laughed at as it just can't be real. As for the current content creators, I would say that it's disincentivising competition.

As a stakeholder in the platform, I do not believe I derive any value from all this content that you claim adds value. It is an illusion, but there is no actual economic or monetary value that derives from it which would support the notion of investors' money being given to bloggers. None.
The only mechanism that supports this being viable is to distribute crytpocurrency widely and have that grow into a self sustaining economy.
Free bets are a game. If people enjoy and participate in the game, it adds value for the participants. It adds value to the economy by distributing tokens widely, seeding a market which can then be tapped by entrepreneurs offering goods and services. (There are other games on steemit that I also like -- I noticed one where you have to guess the combination of a safe.)
It makes just exactly as much, or as little, sense as paying people free money out of thin air for posting their blog, although in reality I think it makes more sense because the market is bigger and the barriers to participation by users is lower.
FWIW, the issue you raise with people not believing in 'free money' already exists. It especially exists when they try to post and earn nothing because they aren't particularly famous, or talented, confirming their view that the whole thing is a scam. Now contrast that with what happens when they pick a side on a steemsports game, and win. They actually earn a payout, into their account, which can be cashed out (and methods for doing this more easily will only improve over time).

You're exactly right. @claudiop63 made a comment about another vote-to-bet game that I had flagged for vote buying (some time ago). The experience of steemsports tells us that this is an evolving platform. Many of us are strongly in favor of experimentation and being open to new directions. I don't particularly care if this turns out to be a blogging platform, a social network, a betting site, a porn site, or some or all of the above. Whatever works to drive enthusiasm and attract, retain and grow a user base is fine with me..The technology itself can continue to evolve and usage of it can also certainly continue to evolve. There is no need to and no particular benefit from getting stuck in one particular model before any significant success has been achieved with it. (This includes Steemsports, maybe that model will turn out to be a dead end as well. I don't know, and I doubt anyone else does either.)

I don't bet, nor use Steem Sports but I did see an increase in frequency of these posts and I wasn't aware it took such a large part of the rewards pool.
My suggestion for @dantheman is to have a "root" type of operation at the blockchain level, that can be subclassed in the client.
"content" and "activity-on-content" could be the root classes and they could be subclassed in a custom implementation.
Steemit.com could implement "content" => "article" (or photo, video, etc), "activity-on-content" => "vote". And SteemitSports.com could implement "content" => "event", "activity-on-content" => "bet".
There really are only those two main operations at the blockchain level and putting specific cases at the blockchain level would clog it eventually.
Also, having the custom implementation in a client could also help with regulatory problems (I'm not a lawyer, though). A gambling website is regulated independently of the WWW protocol.
Also, I have a few use cases on the gaming niche as well that could greatly benefit from such an implementation.

If we imagine Steem long term future, we have to be aware that this kind of initiave can fill a niche but can't be too big in the early days. We can have tens of niches like that in the future but if we give too much importance to sport betting in early days, we will transform the wide potential of Stem and orientate the plateform to this market. That could arm the future of Steem by removing the potential seriousness of it and lead people to think that it's a plateform for betting, photo challenges and cooking receipes ;p

My thought on SteemSports is that it is driving a lot of engagement and is another way for people to interact with Steem that can attract a different type of user. I think most types (not scammers) of users should be encouraged to interact with Steem, and if SteemSports fills a niche as it seems to be doing, I'm all for it.
What has me concerned is the frequency of their posts: 4 or 5 per day with automatic whale upvotes is a lot of the Steem pool to be absorbing. I would hope the voters on these posts look at the big picture and see how much of Steem's posting rewards are going to SteemSports, and consider if it's an appropriate amount.
As for whether to significantly change Steem to accommodate these games, it should hinge on whether or not it makes Steem a more valuable platform for investors to invest in. Any rewards that users cash out would be given value by the people buying STEEM on the market.

As one of the voters (though my vote on steemsports is rather small -- at 30% vote power by itself my vote generates <$1 of reward), I'm pretty sure that I believe that the steemsports method adds more value to the platform than most of the other posts which would otherwise get rewards if steemsports didn't. At least the rewards are widely distributed to dozens of people, and it gives users who aren't themselves bloggers a way to earn (by playing games each day). Those who enjoy sports probably also find value in the fact that each steemsports post is also a sports blog post, generally well written, that discusses the game, players, etc.
I would like to see more competition for this type of post (distribution-oriented, though not specifically sports or gambling), that invites wide distribution and user involvement rather than just one blogger posting something that may or may not have any lasting value and receiving all the rewards. It may turn out that sports gambling is not the most popular format, though it does seem to be for now.

I actually find that rather insulting to the people trying and failing to get a small reward from the platform maybe once out of ten posts while steemsports gets 10 - 100 times what they get 4 or 5 times per day. This is only encouraging everybody who wants SP to compete with these types of vote buying posts. And though you think giving and redistributing the liquid rewards is good for the community, it's hardly likely that any content creators who come and see the same authors on the trending page every single day and more than once a day would see it that way.

I'd like to see the "home page" of the web site improved. Trending (misnamed) is simply a leaderboard of the posts with the most rewards (most weighted votes by SP). There is no reason that necessarily has to be the home page. It should should content people are interested in. For those looking for original (non-sports) content creators, it should be easy to see that and find it.
That does not mean that people should stop offering games, sports blogging, etc. just because others don't like it.

If I was to compare it to the growth of Facebook, there were many who came onto Facebook to play games and many that couldn't stand the games. Game requests would be randomly sent out and eventually methods were brought in to segregate the two communities of interest.
I think there is merit in letting the 'gamers' have their own space. Personally, I'm annoyed by the noise on the feed from all the games. I have zero interest in playing them, but would never seek to deny others what they enjoy.
Encourage but keep separate.

This is absolutely true but it isn't just games. Many have been put off by a lot of the ancap content. Others have been put off by technical analysis charts or whaever. The fact is whatever you post there will always be some people who don't like it. There should be better ways to organize and filter content that interests you from content that doesn't.

SteemSports is just another example of why Steem needs a 'content-type' parameter, which is more than just a tag. Front end applications of all kinds should be able to filter based on content types, and rules can be created for each content type enforced by the consensus mechanism.

I am a fan of any additional game or mechanism that provides an incentive to power up (beyond the original reason, which is to be able to choose how to allocate your voting power).
I foresee SteemSports to be one of several 'games' that utilize the STEEM blockchain.
Other options include freemium RTS games. And instead, here, the game developer requires you to POWER UP in order to train more units, build faster, attack more, etc.
With proper thought into the design, this could bring in another demographic besides those interested in (sports) prediction markets.

I agree. This is why I am generally not in favor of trying to build these things into the blockchain on a one-off basis. Let people experiment, use scripts and bots, build subchains, etc. If there is something built into the blockchain it should be more general (such a scripting or smart contract function) so that it can be applied to many of these different concepts, just not the one that happens to be hot for a few months but may go the way of "Introduce Yourself" in time.

fact 1
engagement is always seeing as a value by potential investors
fact 2
There are no single unit for measuring user engagement. There are clicks, votes, social shares, time on page
Question
How much particular engagement type is worth on the market (in eyes of the investors)? I am not an experts in this area, but this for sure could be described with few numbers
Conclusion
We should measure all those engagement types and compare among types of posts, to make sure, that our hypothesis is correct. Then we can with about taking actions.

I don't see the problem with Steemsports but I can see that from a marketing perspective it may be beneficial to spin it off to a separate APP like Busy that uses the same Steem Blockchain.
That would also protect Steemit against any negative blowback from regulatory issues or just public perception.
We can also then market that separate app more appropriately and essentially get the best of both worlds.
Right now having it mixed up with the blogging may act to confuse people.

This is very interesting. I'm a big fan of @steemsports and was the first winner of the weekly stats payout. However, recently I have noticed more negative sentiment among users about the amount of SteemSports posts on the trending page and the amount of rewards its sucking up from the reward pool.
My thoughts are ideally for @steemsports to find enough sponsors to supplement payouts and maybe to decline payouts when that happens. Also to incentivise greater rewards for participants and to boost price of Steem, maybe the bar could be raised for people to participate and receive rewards. Eg. Participants will need to have minimum of 500 SP to vote.

Dan, this is sick, crazy in the most amazing way.
Sports betting is a trillion $ deal every year. And that's just football. Your proposed solution solves so much I don't think you have any idea how big this is. And I don't only mean this ina financial way. This might sound insane but in your vision of making the world a better place by replacing violence or in this case abuse with open markets.
The most amazing things usually gets invented by chance or side effect. I think this just happened to you.
The key here is:
no cost betting. This changes the game entirely. From gambling and abuse to a skill game that people can play for free or money and actually will provide value to society.
the fact that you can combine any bankroll and cover fantasy players who just do this for fun, to professional gamblers who do this as a living and anyone in between.
-don't forget that this can replace Wall Street as well.
Like you said, augur and any other system that charges even 1% does not solve the problem. You just happen to build the perfect blockchain for this.
Even a fraction of a % of fees in these markets is huge, because the markets are usually quite efficient. As such even a very good pro can only make a few % per bet. If your a champ you might be making 3-10% before any fees. This is why online even if the fees are less than 5% over 90% of players lose in the long run. This makes betting on sports a slot machine, that's almost a scam. Except for very few elite players.
I play poker regularly and this game is a serious income for me. The problem there is the same. 90% of players lose because 80% of the losses are fees. Every time I sit a table half the players are watching games because they have bets on them. The excitement and discussions around sport betting is amazing energy. I don't bet on sport but I can tell you the feeling these people have and the love for the games and their bets is truly spectacular. Unfortunatley today these guys all just give all their money to the casinos.
Everyone is betting illegally. With bookies and offshore sites. Then there are 100s of millions that love these games and would love to make a bet without $$$.
To me if you fix this rigged game, that would really make the world a better place. I hope you go ahead with it.

Blockchain: Gambling for Nerds
Less and less people even attempt to write quality posts. I guess the blockchain has managed again to gather the short term gamblers. The only ones that profit is the House, the organisers. Everybody else is just another lottery player trying to get rich fast.
This is the biggest hurdle for blockchain mass adoption. Nobody trusts our community because it is simply an elaborate gambling scheme no different than the real world. The idealist "better world" stuff is just a marketing promo. All words, no action.

Hmm, then perhaps there's no way around it.
In an ideal world, people wouldn't be lazy, or greedy, or capable of rationalizing away their back-stabbing of loyal and trustworthy people in order to fulfill their desires, but that's not reality. In the privacy of our own minds, we aren't as pure and innocent as we like to lead people on to believe.
Furthermore, let's face it, we're addicted to free, especially free money. Why wouldn't we be? Why wouldn't free giveaways of money draw in huge crowds? Of course it would. Of course it does.
I'll admit it, I prefer to have things handed to me. I prefer to take on little or no risk. I prefer to feel comfortable and secure, like I don't have to put anything on the line, or out in the open, for that matter. I prefer these things, which is why I'm drawn to these SP distribution blogs, which is also why Steemsports gets so much action (attention).
My suggestion is that we not kill the cash-cow, even if it pisses off the minority of people who're willing to put out a lot of energy to compete for their stake. At the risk of coming across as callous, I'll say it anyways: let the whiners leave if they can't accept the collective voice of the market, because the money lies in the majority, not the minority.
Stick with the thing that appeals to the bigger crowd, which may perhaps be the less (intellectually/ emotionally) evolved crowd, but that's where the money lies; that's the consumer market which is the steam to the capitalistic engine; that's where we, as a community, make our money on this platform, IMO...and I could be wrong, but it seems to me to follow logic.
Take it for what it's worth (two cents?).

Let's allow the market to decide worth. Again, we aren't living on ideals here, neither yours nor mine. Reality likes to piss us off.
Also, I don't agree that it doesn't offer anything new. Reward potential without any risk profile whatsoever is an attractive model, no? It becomes even more attractive when we consider that a single Steemsports payout is like 10,000 times the payout of your average "dust" curation reward.
The question here is "how to grow (voting) influence?", and consider now that less than 1 out of 10, randomly chosen, 13+ years old, people enjoy blogging. How to attract? How to retain?
Low effort for reward is a good starting point, IMO. Basing the reward on a topic that is a common interest is pretty much a no-brainier. Enter Steemsports.
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

This is different from steemsports, IIUC. In steem sports, the payout is divided equally, regardless of the number of rshares (which is why it distributes funds).
You could make an argument either way about what steem sports is doing, but what youre talking about -- collating the payout to the SP balance of the bettor, is not legal, at least by US standards.
At that point, youre essentially having people buy "betting power" So if I pay 100 dollars for XXX steem power, i can cast say 40 one dollar bets a day (actually way less than a dollar, but regardless). and if i pay double that, i can cast 40 two dollar bets a day . Similar "casino-club" workarounds have been attempted in the past, and none of them has ever flown.
Of course, what happens on the blockchain stays on the blockchain, so it might not be something us authorities can do anything about, but its defintiely outside the law.
Legality aside, the problem with this model is that its the same old song. Lets run a sportsbook. But instead of having people bet with (and risk and win) real money, lets have them bet with votes and get paid in SP that they can't really use.
So its like a sportsbook, but a half-assed version that you need hundreds of thousands of steem to participate meaningfully in.

If one may take the opportunity you have given to express thought....
Thoughts...Queries....
If we believe in free market Capitalism...then why is this an issue?
Is @steemsports following the current guidelines set up by Steemit?
ie. of no more than one post per four hours.
Also, the concept of Steemit is the future...as long as man seeks freedom...the freedom Steemit provides will be a winning attractant. Freedom to fail....Freedom to succeed. Steemit has the potential to be everything to everyone under free market concepts...and there will be everything here from soup to nuts...the market will decide who soars and who falls flat.
Principle...True freedom guarantees inequality.
Final thoughts. If Steemsports were conducting anything remotely similiar to betting...there would be far fewer participants in my opinion as then one would have something to lose.

Hmm. I agree that there's a type of freedom that guarantees inequality, but I'm not sure I'd call that form true freedom.
When I think true freedom, I think complete and total freedom from psychological suffering and freedom from the seemingly incessant need to compare and/or prove oneself to others (seeking approval). I think absolute and total independence, as in accepting NO authorities in any walk of life. I think a total loss of a subjective sense of judgment (loss of ego-identity), therefore, no basis to determine who's equal or unequal, on any terms.
I think freedom FROM choice, not OF choice, kind of like how your heart beats without any conscious efforts, whatsoever.
This type of freedom, a Buddhist would call "nirvana". Freedom FROM self, not FOR self. Freedom FROM competition, not TOWARDS competing. In other words, the total opposite end of the spectrum from what you called true freedom.
What you defined as a true freedom, a Buddhist would call "bondage" (to the material; to greed; to psychological suffering).
BTW, I'm not a Buddhist, nor do I practice Buddhism in any way. Just thought I'd share a different perspective, one that I believe has some merit (it makes sense to me that freedom from one's own ego would lead to a great sigh of relief, so to speak, as a great deal of personal burdens would go away with it).

Sports betting for payouts is fun because you are betting on a 50% chance of a win or loss, and like you said Dan, without coming out of pocket. Everything to gain.... nothing to lose.
To me, Steemit is more of a creative outlet for art, photography, creative writing, or pretty much anything that is interesting reading.
Steem Sports is fun, but it is not really a creative post. It is creative in the sense that is very popular (I wish I thought of it first!), but it does seem a lot different than the traditional posts by the many creative people that I watch daily.
I am not an attorney, but it does seem as though gambling with monetary payouts could have legal ramifications, because gambling is heavily regulated, but the same could be said for posting a photograph of a sunset and receiving a monetary award.
To me, I would rather have Steemit influenced by creativity rather than gambling.

It is time to have communities my friend! It is time to bucket off certain businesses who have a home on SteemIt or potentially want a home on SteemIt. How does this look ? Check out what our dear friend @frystikken has suggested for 'Adult Content' . This should be allowed for any 'subset' of business that is taking place on the main platform. Let's shuttle them off into their own SteemIt type blockchain and let the people create a whole new economy and business model around it. In fact, the future of SteemIt requires it. Adoption only comes in the form of a communities. Reddit is built on that idea. I even see a future where there are tools to let the people who are the leaders in their communities to even build more customized based communities with the 'rules' similar to what you mentioned in the above post. Maybe, wordpress'ish looking SteemIt communities. Thoughts ?

They must be doing well from all the SP they get. I notice they get more votes on the post than on the comments, but that's probably just the many bots.
I do think Steemit should make it easy to implement games here as a lot of people like that. If it keeps them coming back then it's good for the site.

I like this idea. But, of course I also like the current STEEMSPORTS. Is it really considered betting if nobody is fronting the bet up front, including the OP. It's just doing a payout from the rewards that ANY post has the chance to make. If I recall, the only post I've noticed where you could put money up front, was the Hillary/Trump bet. Voting for a bet semantically means voting to add funds from the daily rewards budget to the "pot" of the bet. If we allow bet content-types where this kind of funding happens (in addition to gamblers putting in their own money), then it should be both technically and socially acceptable to vote against the rewards pool being used this way. Downvoting a SteemSports or similar post should have no impact on the accounts reputation. It is merely a stakeholder expressing a disagreement over fiscal policy.

Voting to reduce rewards does not in general reduce rep. If voter A votes to allocate $X of rewards to a post and then voter B votes to reduce rewards on a post by $X (or any amount up to $X) then the effect on rep is (essentially always) either neutral or positive.

Sounds fun. One thought/suggestion is that it could be made more generic, to basically allow a game to be created out of any predictable event. (Who will win an election, etc.)
I think the main argument against it is that it uses rewards out of the reward pool, but as you stated - if that is what the community is voting on, then it is the community's decision.
If the community decides at a later date that we no longer want to be using the rewards pool for this activity (or at least less of it) - then we (i.e. the whales) would just need to stop voting for those types of posts. It is the type of thing that we can always stop supporting in the future if we decide to.

This would be something huge.
Especially this, many dice sites out there have around 1% house edge, which doesn't sound like a lot (considering casinos) but building up a place where players can bet against other players, without fees or third party winning on their betting activity, would be revolutionary.
I had a project in the making for soccer prediction betting after following @nanzo-scoop's score prediction posts, it had a lot of rules that would be related to the part at the end of your post. Players would earn points for correct predictions in the past, gain more influence in future bets, etc while using the Steemit reputation system as first filter.
I am very excited to see how this will evolve further on the platform, glad you brought it up.

I am not a sports fan. It is just not my thing, though I can tell the writing is good. I've bet on a few of the bets on which way STEEM might trend and I think another, but it's not really my thing so I generally don't vote on any of these posts.
With that said I believe Steemit should be as inclusive as we can reasonably make it. I do not believe we should restrict this or other types of posts if we can avoid it. If you can make an on chain solution that makes this work better for them, and perhaps at the same time might protect some of the reward pool then that sounds like a WIN/WIN situation.
I would like to see eventually any type of content (legal) be permitted on the blockchain. I'd even like to see porn be viable, but I think we need a tag filtering system before that, and that PORN be a tag that is auto-filtered and you would need to manually remove the filter for it not to be filtered. I don't necessarily need to view porn myself, as the internet is full of that and there is no shortage. There is so much you could spend every waking minute looking at porn and still be behind. So I don't see a NEED for it. Yet I like the idea of no censorship and being inclusive, thus why I mention it.
I visit sites that have porn tabs now and I don't tend to view them, as there is no need, but the option is still there.
So all I can say is INCLUSIVE++ and if you can make it work better, that is even better.

I am not interested in sports much, and the only questions I have about SteemSports is related to the rewards payouts. I read only about half of the comments, but what I didn't see anywhere in this article or its comments is WHY the rewards payouts are depleting the pool. Seems to me the idea of rewarding content isn't working well if the depletion is due to the sheer volume of traffic and not on content.
It also seems like this controversy is another example of potentially changing the rules to prohibit an activity. If the activity clearly hurts the platform, as was the case with the "premium names" rule change in BitShares last year, then perhaps the rules need to be adjusted. I say perhaps because "changing the rules" violates trust, reputation and social consensus. It also impacts the platform's reputation as being censorship free. I can see the perspective that prohibiting SteemSports could be viewed as censorship.
This is why I replied to @tuck-fheman saying we need a way to directly measure community consensus. Whether @dan & @ned choose to listen to the community is of course their decision, but at least it would be an informed one rather than a centralized authoritarian one.
