If you live in Bangladesh this question probably needs no answering as you already know of the prominence of Bangabandhu and why he has received so many honorable accolades. I am not from Bangladesh so I only found out about the history of its great leader after hearing about the Bangabandhu-1 which was launched by Space-X Falcon 9 rocket. I read the satellite being launched today was named after a great man so I decided to do some deeper research and i was very interested in what I learned.

The first thing I learned was that Bangabantu was not his actual name; He was actually called Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He was a renowned Bengali political figure and he is known as the founding father of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. He was bestowed the honor to serve as the first President of Bangladesh and was later also elected Prime Minister of Bangladesh in March 1971 but was assassinated a few years later in August of 1975. The Public knows him as the Bangabandhu (Bôngobondhu) which means The Friend of Bengal. He gained prominence and eventually was given leadership of the Awami League. This was and East Pakistan based Political party founded in 1949. He has been credited as one of the most important figures to help gain political autonomy for East Pakistan; He went on to become the Driver behind the Bangladesh Liberation Movement and a major figure in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. His actions as a revolutionary also gained him the moniker Jatir Janak (Jatir Jônok) which means Father of the Nation of Bangladesh. His legacy lives on as today his daughter Sheikh Hasina is now the leader of the Awami League and the sitting Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Sheikh Mujibs stent as Prime Minister of Bangladesh was plagued with unfortunate circumstances that eventually led to his demise. The government he created had a constitution that espoused socialism and secular democracy. Since they were war heroes the Awami League won big in the country's first elections in 1973. despite this powerful party cohesion Bangladesh was plagued with the usual developing nation challenges of unemployment, impoverishment, and graft. the administration faced rising political agitation and responded by implementing a one party socialist regime in 1975. By July of 1945 he and most of his family were assassinated by army officers during a bloody coup.

Regardless of his fate at the hands of his supporters the people of Bangladesh hold Bangabandhu in high esteem as he was recently voted the most influential man to have live in Bangladesh. This legacy of respect has continued on as the Bengali space agency has chosen to name a class of satellites after him. It is good to see that the people still honor him even though he wasn't the greatest ruler.
