Close, but no donut (7 pies instead)

I wanted to find out if the middle class was growing, and at a glance it does look that way, but....

... the pies above don't really show what is required :(

My original plan was to present the total Author Rewards earned by each class, but the problem is we only have the current standings.

These are today's numbers:

All accounts

image.png

What we don't have are last weeks, last months, or the numbers from 6 months ago, on an account by account basis.

E.g. A dolphin earning rewards in February 2019 will boost the author rewards percentage for Dolphins in February (correct). However, in October, they only owned 4000 SP (Minnow) but will still be placed in the Dolphin bracket due to the SP they own today (incorrect).

Yesterdays author rewards should be pretty accurate - not many accounts will have changed ranking overnight (there will likely be some though).

Accounts that received a payout

Which in % terms and grouped by class, looks a bit like

And I suppose I could update this post every day for 6 months - but would it really show much on a day by day basis?

  • VESTS held/SP owned change constantly which makes it an absolute ball-ache to present historical data like this

  • This is just Author Rewards (No interest, curation, witnessing, wallet sends, power-ups) - I'd like to include the lot if I was going to claim to be presenting findings on which class was growing the fastest.

It's quite shocking how much time some of us spend looking at data with a view to trying to present something of interest, sorry it didn't happen today :P

Cheers

Yeah...way to go.

Seriously though, you are a rockstar. I always love looking at the stats and charts you provide. These are things that dummies like myself don’t really think about on the reg, but are important as they provide tons of perspective as to where were are headed.

Major disappointment today, but that's how it goes I guess. Cheers though!

Skills in other areas is much better than 'dummy' :D

Skills...like in pool or arcade games?!? Wait...I lack those as well...

Posted using Partiko iOS

I'm not leaving until you tell me something you are good at!

Sucking at games?!? I’m damn sure I’m good at that. One of the best actually.

I'm going to beat you with this fish I just bought today, and you wont like it because it's in a tin.

One more attempt, you can dooooooooit!

I would say middle class is now 71% of accounts instead of 60% from the first chart. For me minnows and dolphins make up the middle class of regular user.

So it has grown but the real question is in terms of vests and voting power between the groups. I know from other posts that the distribution is changing and that change is speeding up every month.

Posted using Partiko Android

Yes that's what the charts show, but the classification is based only on the size of account today.

If i was a minnow 6 months ago, I would not boost the percentage for a minnow 6 months ago, but would add to the dolphin % as that is my 'class' today.

VESTS is shown each day by Penguinpablo I think, and whilst it is showing distribution, there is nothing that can show that these accounts boosting the class are not owned by a whale.

I would suggest that many of the fastest growing minnow/dolphin/orca accounts (check creativecrypto and the accounts that delegate to it) are owned by larger accounts. There is more than meets the eye, sadly.

We all know there is plenty going on behind the scenes alright but I follow taskmaster and he does a regular post about vests and account numbers too. The percentages are changing and the further they move the quicker it gets.

Obviously that's not 100% accurate with multiple accounts but I do think that with the power some of the apps have that distribution is changing and moving the power. When I started the only way to earn steem was through whale votes which most people never got. Now there are multiple ways for new accounts to earn and grow which makes it far more appealing in my opinion. It's possible to earn decent upvotes from day 1 rather than weeks of zeros.

Very true. In August 2017 we had dtube, and utopian also appeared that month. Now there is a lot more.

I joined in Aug 2016 - Only curie to aim at back then!

I wish. Never even got a sniff of a curie vote. At least now I can get small votes daily from esteem, actifit and steemmonsters as well as using the apps. They build up surprisingly fast if you use them every day. If you know how to operate you can do alright. We just need to show the newbies how to get the most from them.

I guess it depends how you look at or view the data and in what context. So it may have not been interesting to you, but after reading about RC view from the steemitblog people it is interesting to me:

All accounts:
1,220,913 Plankton
13,992 Redfish
9,077 Minnow

Accounts that received a payout:
2,436 Plankton
1,379 Redfish
1,799 Minnows

so percentage of all accounts getting a reward:
plankton = 0.0019952281612203
Redfish = 0.0985563178959405
Minnow = 0.1981932356505453

Thats if I did the percentage thing right, not sure I did.
And steemitblog thinks RC have no effect on user experience.

Tough to say that this is the only reason. You need to chop out the accounts that have never posted, and take a look at how many were active on that day in the past. That what I was trying to do today, but it's not easy due to what I stated in the post.

The price also took many out - if you weren't earning much prior to the fork at 1$, a month or two later with the price at 20 cents - got to be tough for the little guys.

There was a lot of support in SP delegation available from so many accounts to those needing some RC's - I can't believe this message missed thousands.

The next bull run might be a good indicator. How much spam will we get, will people spend the 30$ to become active without restraint.

@abh12345, No matter if you wanted to come up with something else but this data is also pursuable.

Yeah, it took hours and in the end, nothing worthwhile - paid for the process? :D

Atleast this effort let you know that you've didn't accomplished what you wanted to and inturn will push you to know what went wrong and next time you will come up with better attempt. Sometimes we don't need results but whatever results take place it teaches us for the next phase of it. Keep up brother and your efforts are not wasted. Stay blessed.

The day i will become a whale, i am going to throw a party

Will it be a beach party?

BOOOOM! :D :D

ha!

looks cool. btw, what kind of drawing tool are you using?

Looks OK, but doesn't show what I wanted!

MS Excel, boooooooo

Have you played with matplotlib? I've been using it at work and it's pretty cool if you can handle a bit of Python.

haha actually I like abh12345's plot too, which I didn't expect that it was done by Excel. but maybe matplotlib is easier to customize, e.g., https://steemit.com/utopian-io/@blockchainstudio/witness-of-the-people-by-the-people-for-the-people

Scope for a rude comment here but I'm going to leave the snake well alone!

I guess the representation tool is only a good as the data going in, and basically, we don't have it.

It might be possible to roll through the blocks from a certain point in time and build the data-set that way. I don't have the skills or the the desire to be honest.

You have some Python knowledge? Let's see it in action on the Steem blockchain @steevc, make us rich! :D

Excel is really an ultimate tool! especially with macro. Thanks for your reply!

I think you are @paulag's (of @theexcelclub) new best friend :D

You're right! @paulag's plots are amazing! (although I haven't read many since I started Utopian recently) But afaik, the plotting part was not provided in the post, so I couldn't follow the magic :( @paulag, could you recommend some of your posts that I can learn Excel chart skills?

ps. Your SQL script is also amazing! These days client is also powerful, so I came to prefer do the most job with Python, especially when I need more raw level data later anyway.

Its a nice shade of red. Would you possibly have the pantone reference please ?

Como?

Today's red is brought to you by, 'Standard' Excel red

Well its colorfull and red is dominant, and I read it 🤢

Red is dominating for sure - congratulations for reading the whole post! :D

Did you doubt it ?

Uhmm.. I have 5 planktons account and 1 redfish account😊 so it's a total of steem users, I think next time you could makes some donut about how many account with number as their name 😂😂😂

The impossible to finish donut!

I find it quite interesting!

Thanks! It would have been a lot more interesting if I could have shown what I wanted :)

Don't think this is a waste of time as I think it demonstrates the ability of the middle class to earn currently by engaging and posting here. I would have thought whale made up more of this pie to begin with but the fact that redfish and minnows account for 50% or more is encouraging and probably supports the fact to leave the 75/25 split with no changes rather than move to 50/50 as have been suggested.

Well @abh12345 ...

"It's quite shocking how much time some of us spend looking at data with a view to trying to present something of interest, sorry it didn't happen today :P"

... not sure why you've chosen to end this post this way. I am sure there are many of us who have a great appreciation for the effort you put in to "turning the lights on" with posts like this. I know I do!

"E.g. A dolphin earning rewards in February 2019 will boost the author rewards percentage for Dolphins in February (correct). However, in October, they only owned 4000 SP (Minnow) but will still be placed in the Dolphin bracket due to the SP they own today (incorrect)."

Yes, understood. As well as the rest of your post about the "difficulty factor" ... And why it is almost impossible to measure "class metrics" with any accuracy. Perhaps in your "Utopian" or "Witness" role, or both, you could suggest a comprehensive solution to the "powers that be" to consider building.

Why go to the trouble? I think it would have significant "due diligence" value to potential investors to be able to evaluate an "Executive Summary" view of how the Steem blockchain is doing, with some "drill down" options ...

Okay, I'll stop now. I have some database skills myself. Perhaps someday I will be able to join into the effort. For now, I am hoping, before the day is out, to write my "Month 10" update. With my "teeny weeny" attempt to present a little perspective on progress ...
