The Steem start-up craze

in steem •  6 years ago

I remember when Ethereum was having a surge in price the first time it landed on 3 digits and the ICO craze started occurring, so much Eth being locked up in new projects all promising big things but few ending up delivering anything. Many got lucky with Eth and made a fortune only to find they shouldn't have doubled down and see their greed take away what they had made and not able to sell when prices started hitting 4 digits and instead having the projects they had invested in bring the price back down along with the rest of the cryptomarket. What can we learn from that here on Steem?

Well, we may not be the best at discovering great content with what the current system offers, which I'm hoping will change for the better soon, but one thing we can try do better is invest in the startups that are and will be happening here. Steem has a great advantage as it already has a big community, one of the biggest in the cryptosphere and can give new projects a great boost in usage early on. This is something that many lack, if you look at Eth it was struggling to have daily users of their dapps for a long time, transaction fees sure didn't help and that's not going to get better any time soon.

I am hoping we will be able to use proof of brain better in this aspect though, and the way our platform is built where words travel fast within our system it is going to be interesting seeing how things evolve. There are quite a few projects moving from the other chains onto Steem and many new ones starting up, something I encourage my readers and anyone else stumbling upon this post is to be careful where you place your Steem. A big advantage we have is that the cost to run applications on our blockchain is fairly low, this means that many startups won't even require a direct investment but offer stake through delegation instead. I've mentioned many times in the past how much better of a way this is to invest in what you believe will be a successful project cause it will be as safe as possible while only costing you the reward pool for what you could've earned with that Steem during the period of the investment, the stake itself remains in your control at all times. Not many other chains can brag about having this opportunity.

Not only is it safer but it will also cause for more competition between similar projects, they will want to offer you more stake, better returns and keep on improving and delivering cause else it will mean you can just adjust your delegation at any time. We've already seen a few of these become quite popular such as steemhunt and now the upcoming actifit and their sale, and all this during one of the harshest bear markets Steem and their dapp ecosystem may have ever faced. It's a pretty good sign for the next ones.

We're already privileged to have these advantages and never have to risk our own stake to invest in these new start-ups, but let's aim high and be clever about not being tricked by things that seem too good to be true and riskier than need be. Let's help each other make wise decisions cause in the end we will all win together as that's how the system is built up. I believe we can do much better than the ICO's that happened with Eth and that we can save a lot of the possible damage that could be caused if we were as reckless as those investors were.

I am really looking forward to investing my stake in future projects here on Steem and trying my best to give unbiased views on what I think will be good investments to my readers. It's really exciting to me of what is yet to come as the possibilities are endless in this open environment of this ever growing and evolving technology. Let's make the most of it. :)

{I’m still waiting for your explanation comment on the downvote post}

Yeah me too! i demand you give back my voting manna, you tricked me into doing it, i was taken advantage of, i'll give you 24 hours to come up with the goods otherwise i'll find you on drugwars and SMASH! That reminds me, am i on OCD white list yet?

Ahhahh, @michealb: you rock! 🤘

lol, hope he doesn't think i'm serious about the white list haha

I’m extremely excited about Steem, the fact that you can support projects basically risk free should be a big incentive to hold SP long term.

Ps: I’m still waiting for your explanation comment on the downvote post, suspense is killing me 😂

Long slow sigh for reliving your ETH scenario... Oh how life would've been different if I wasn't so brainwashed to "hold strong" then.

If and when SMT’s, investing in these new project would be ideal. Still waiting for it 😂

Delegation is a really interesting way of financing a project. From a borrower's perspective if you borrow say 1million SP at 17 APR you need 170,000 Steem over the year or around 465 a day.

You can buy that all now for around 72000 USD at 42 cents each. Then you can start a slow power-down. You can also buy it slowly, say once a week. Or whatever you want. The nice thing is there are options.

You may get someone cancelling the delegation though :|

Start Ups are nice. The days of just borrowing to blog and hoping for the best are ending fast. The margins are too narrow. However, I think if you have a website, especially a forum, moving it to Steem could be lucrative.

Maybe something like hot or not would work?

It's a timely reminder.... and delegation is one of the biggest strengths of steem if you ask me - investing without risking your capital - that should be one of steem's major straplines it's such a mindblowing concept!

I believe steem have a great future ahead but just need time to unleashed. People may not discover it yet. The future is bright. Projects will soon keep and continue coming up.time will really tell soon

You've always been so strategic and constructive in opening your audience's eyes to the potentials that lie within Steem. Thank you for always advising.

I see Steem as a blockchain that helps anyone to start with almost nothing due to "brain value" concept. It far reduces the risks of funds.

Agree on the content but I have to say that that must be one of the best photos you've published. That's because it has a strong composition. The channel acts as a leading line to the main subject, which is the bridge. The reflections look good. The clouds and the snow on the ground look good. The channel begins from a corner of the picture.

It is both good and bad. With the ease of migrating to Steem it makes it extremely easy for nefarious asshats to take advantage. But it is also easy for quality projects to build a serious Dapp that will have impact outside of the Steem chain as well as in.

What I would like to see is a metric for measuring the various Dapps. Some way to effectively determine the viability of a project, its team, and its direction.

but one thing we can try do better is invest in the startups that are and will be happening here.

@acidyo you're right about this, I can't help but want to throw in support each time I see a startup with a plan that blows my mind, but I'm also trying to reserve a little SP for curation, I'm not sure how much longer I can resist giving away all my SP. gosh!

Considering what the community, not Steemit Inc, has been able to do to make the ecosystem stronger is encouraging. Now with Steemit Inc bringing ideas (even though not popular) to the mix, things could get interesting. There is no way to deny that the value being created is more than it was a year or two ago despite the price. It is making this more sustainable for the long term.

I am looking forward to more investment done this way rather than having projects fight for direct votes. I think that this becomes more effective once SMTs allow for contributor rewards so SP becomes investment collateral.

Projects are already taking investment via delegation and this takes active SP out from content rewards to some degree (narrows it at least) but later, SMTs take the reward function part and if projects are successful, will generate more value across the network than Steem can alone. It also reduces the conflict and arguments about how to use SP.

This is a blockhain. Any use of SP is correct if it's allowed by the blockchain.

I support such method to nurture and promote new startups to mushroom through Steem ecosystem. There were already great platforms like @utopian-io, @tasteem (which currently under siege 😢), @steemhunt and more. As a whole, the startups need to provide eccentric values to the market which if not, it will not last even it gets funded with stakes of Steem. With a limited stake I have, hope to venture together with these projects if I’m able to (financially). If not, then perhaps through utilization of their products also part of the support I could give.

Again, hope that Steem will be a suitable ground to sprout more startups in near future!

acidyo is there a list of the top authors here that write about as much as this post, not really interested in long form stuff though. i'm looking at adding people to my feed. oh prefer ones that write maybe once every few days / once a week

@acidyo, We never know what will be unfold by future but one thing is for sure and that is, if we give right value to those who are coming up with right practical ideas and projects then definitely there are chances that these projects will going to develop effective Ecosystem.

Let's collectively put valuable steps wherever it's possible and let's enjoy the journey. Stay blessed.

hopefully it will add enthusiasm to this startup steam

Yep things are looking good. :) Now if only we could fix the content that would change a lot of things hopefully. Or maybe not. I dont know.
I always think that the price will go up if proof of brain is fixed, but then again i might think that because i am a content creator and i am biased. Maybe nothing happens to the price if proof of brain is fixed.
