Calling all Steemians to Protect and Defend Steem's new Wikipedia pages

View this post on Hive: Calling all Steemians to Protect and Defend Steem's new Wikipedia pages

In mid-February 2020 Justin Sun acquired the shares in Steemit Inc and proceeded centralise the blockchain under his control, improperly using Steemit's founders stake (intended for development and decentralisation of the blockchain) and tricking exchanges into initially supporting his power grab.

After extensive efforts to resolve the dispute failed, the community revolted and formed a new, fully decentralised blockchain - Hive - without the pernicious influence of Justin Sun and his minions.
Because of Open Source licensing, Hive was legally able to duplicate all the code and content on Steem.
The vast majority of the community and decentralised applications and projects moved to Hive and Hive was listed on many cryptocurrency exchanges without having to pay the normal listing fees.

On 19 May 2020, a Steem hard fork (0.23) designed to steal the Steem from 65 accounts associated with creating Hive became public.
My position on this hard fork can be found here: https://peakd.com/hf23/@brianoflondon/letter-to-exchanges-do-not-run-steem-hard-fork-23-hf-0-23-0

This was the final straw for my involvement with Steem.

I will now post exclusively on Hive at https://peakd.com/@apshamilton/posts
All my old Steem content can also be found on Hive.

Thanks to the great efforts of @vikisecrets, @theaustrianguy, @theycallmedan, @singhcapital, @reggaemuffin, @lauch3d, we now have excellent Steem Wikipedia pages in English and German.

However, we can't rest on our laurels. These pages need to be defended!

In the past, sterling individual efforts of Steemians such as @southernwolf to put up a Steem page without broad support from others have been stymied by ignorant Wikipedia moderators.
Hopefully now they get the message that Steem and Steemit are different and that you shouldn't just judge a blockchain by its market cap.

However if they don't get the message from the excellent content, we need to give them the message that we Steemians have a powerful community that is very active.

The best way to do this is have lots of different contributors, each adding a small amount of valuable content and thanking all the other positive contributors on the Wikipedia edit history page.

Anyone can edit a Wikipedia page. You just need to sign up for an account.
Accounts that have contributed to Wikipedia before will be treated more seriously than newcomers.
Fortunately I've made a few contributions (as SJC123) since 2012.

An obvious area of contribution is adding Steem DApps to the list on the Wikipedia page.
There are still a few prominent ones missing.
Please stick to the top 20 or so on State of the DApps, so they are notable enough.

Keep a watch on the page and if you see a major deletion by someone that appears to be ignorant about Steem then undo it.

Wikipedia is crucial for more mainstream adoption of Steem.
Its the first place many people will go to find out about Steem.

So together we must protect and defend it.

The work y'all have achieved cannot be understated! You succeed where I could not, and I am most impressed! You appear to have made sure that even the most ignorant Wiki moderators couldn't deny the importance, and separation, of Steem as opposed to just Steemit. For those curious about my original efforts, check out the Infogalactic link where I uploaded the same wikipedia article I wrote (Infogalactic is a mirror of wikipedia that is less restrictive and controlling). Feel free to pull any useful information from that article, as the templates and stuff work identically to as they do on Wikipedia. And soon, I will update the Infogalactic page to reflect the updated Wiki page as well! :)

One thing I did notice is that the template at the bottom for cryptocurrencies lists Steem incorrectly. It lists Steem as a Proof-of-work SHA-256 currency, which is the same category as Bitcoin and Peercoin. This is very incorrect as Steem is neither an SHA-256 coin, nor is it even a Proof-of-work coin, it is a (Delegated) Proof-of-stake. You can see what I mean in the picture below:

The reason I bring this up is because boilerplate templates like this can't be edited by normal users and requires "established, registered users" to change them. So someone will need to submit an edit request to change the template to correct the info. I would do this, but I am choosing not to as I tried to do this with my previous attempts to make a page for Steem on wikipedia. The TL;DR version of what happened is that Wikipedia mods don't like being questioned about their choices and I got blocked for 48 hours. Because of this, I'm choosing not to submit the edit request for fear my account history might cause it to be not accepted. For those that wish to submit an edit request, just click the "E" in the top-left corner of the boilerplate (you can see it in the image) and it will take you to a screen where you can submit the edit request. Hopefully, with a fully fleshed-out wikipedia page for Steem existing now, this boilerplate info can be corrected quickly and without trouble.

Thanks @southernwolf for all your hard work and for pointing out this issue in the template area.
This is now corrected.

Thanks for the follow, @apshamilton. Saw the article about this the other day. Best of luck with the Class Action! I'm sure you can tell that I think it's gonna go well :)

Thanks. Don’t forget to sign up for the class action as well. All Steemians are eligible. Www.jpbliberty.com. You’ll get some extra SUFB tokens. :-)

Count me in

Thanks. Was it you who added in a point re eSteem?
Someone tried to delete it but I undid their deletion.

Veteran editor ("Slgrandson" since early 2005), correcting you a bit.

Nearly all WP content can be edited by anyone, regardless of registration. Several pages can be only edited by users (semi-protected) or administrators (fully protected). Furthermore, article creation is restricted to credible users. Otherwise, good call for action!

Thanks for the clarification. I've corrected The Cryptocurrency template info referred by @sothernwolf in these comments.
If you can assist me in watching for changes on the Steem and Cryptocurrency template pages that would be appreciated.

Great point - I've never been a Wiki contributor but I hope some that have some 'rep' on Wiki will help defend the cause. Thanks for point this out :-) Cheers!

Yes, I hope to flush out some other Steemians with Wikipedia experience.
I've reversed two different attempts to delete different valid sections of the page with no further push back.
We'll see how it goes.

This is a great idea I haven’t considered! I will look at it and see how we can find ways individually to improve it for those seeking relevant information about our great community led ecosystem. Thanks for sharing!
