Being new to this community as of just a few days ago, this is the only part of Steemit that has me wary. That seems too good to be true. Or am i missing something?

@artopium, this is a great question and I hope to ease your concerns a bit.
It is very possible to earn over $100 on your first post. This is primarily done because 1 or more influential Steemit users upvote a post.
My upvote is only worth 17 cents, but a there are a few people who have upvotes worth over a $100. And then if you combine upvotes a lot of smaller upvotes together then you could reach $100 dollars.
The key to a first post being so valuable is being seen by the write people at the write time. And when that is combine with a engagin, creative post then it is possible to earn right from the start.
At the same time, someone else could write the best post ever and no one ever see it and then earn absolutely nothing.
So my advice is ...
And with some time and effort you will be earning too.

That gets my upvote! Which is currently worth zero, but I'll accumulate more steem power soon. ;)

yeah, I can't say I'm here solely for the money, although it's definitely an incentive. I'm just looking for a new social media platform that has an audience interested in my various projects. After playing around with Steemit for the last few days I think I could have more success promoting my work here than Facebook or Twitter or Etsy or DeviantArt etc... I'm actually very excited about Steemit and I hope to be able to contribute some quality content that gets appreciated. If that's by way of Steem Dollars, excellent!

That's the best way to look at it alright! Steemit needs more people with that outlook :-)

@sumatranate So, if someone has enough power to grant $100 per upvote, I imagine they would have to be careful what they click on lest they deteriorate the quality of content on Steemit, no? I also imagine that there are not many who have that power, lest the value of Steem would deteriorate.

My first post made over 1 Steem, but a bunch of my early posts got 0 or .03 or .05 or something small like that. And I was making long quality posts that would take me an hour or 2 to write. Look back at the early days on my blog and you'll see it wasn't an easy start for me. You can't let the small payouts at the start get you down. It's about building up your community of support. People who make 100 Steem on their first post are either already famous and are well known, or they happen to be someone who knows a whale or 2. I'm still just a minnow, but I'm still trying to help you best I can.

Ha! Of course! Like I said earlier, I'm not as interested in the payout as I am in finding an audience. You know I'm trying to promote a wide variety of artists from Artopium, and Facebook is like talking to an echo chamber. I've been here two days and I've already met more new people than I have in the last three years on facebook. That's real steem power! But of course, I'm no dummy, and I'll gladly take a post that makes a nice $100.
