What I mean by private messaging is that once I submit a private 'message' or post, it will become unintelligible to everyone apart from the person or people with the means to unlock/decode it. Transparency as a principal is wonderful, but there are certain uses to which the Steemchain might be put that are not comfortable without privacy.
There may be many benign reasons to have private messaging on the Steemchain. I'm going to suggest a couple of reason that would be useful to me;
Personal messages -
I would like to be able to leave messages for members of my family that they will be able to read at some point in the future. For example;
- I'd like to compose a message for my daughter and have the Steemchain look after it until she is old enough to comprehend it. When the time is right, I will provide her with the means to unlock the message. She can log in to Steemit, find the relevant post and unlock the message that has been waiting for her in my blog.
- I might like to leave instructions for family members should certain advents come to pass.
- I might want to leave private messages to myself....like a diary, work notes, ideas or script drafts. Our blogs could be personal bodies of work as well as the means for sharing information and connecting.
There may be reasons that businesses, scientists or researchers would like to use the Steemchain but would also like a degree of privacy.
It would be very useful to be able to assign locks to groups of posts which could be globally removed....or even timelocks.
Perhaps there are issues with implementing private messaging on the Steemchain in the manner I'm suggesting. If you know what they are, I would certainly appreciate it if you left a comment or two to explain. There are ways to do all of the things i'd like to do off the Steemchain. However, the Steemchain is so advanced, resilient, efficient, secure, convenient......I find myself wanting to do everything on it.

@l0k1 described a way to do it with a memo key, in chat yesterday:

Thank you for this baah. So there is a way to do it but it's not currently exposed. Can it really be because of too much data? We're hoping to scale up the Steemchain quite a bit more aren't we?! lol

I don't know why they didn't implement it especially since the function is basically there. I don't believe because of data limits, they could limit the amount of data the message is plus they limit the amount of transactions you can make in a time period so why not do the same for that. It seems it might have been forgotten, I don't know how else to explain it otherwise.

Well, hopefully we'll be able to find out what the issue is or will be able to implement a solution fairly rapidly. I think it would add enormous value to the network/Steemchain.
Perhaps if there are concerns about private spam....private messages have all rewards disabled.

Yes but a way to block users from sending transactions, or otherwise from receiving transactions/messages from certain users in that regard seems like a natural solution to preventing such spam.

These are great features. I think something like https://lbry.io will be more appropriate since Steemit is a blogging platform by nature. Private messaging would be very nice feature indeed.

Thank you. Steemit is a blogging platform, but the Steemchain can be used in almost any way imaginable. I think privacy features could be built into most of the principal apps including Steemit and Busy.
lbry looked like an interesting project, thank you for the link.

It's possible to encrypt message in your posts or comments with a program like CTI but that's not exactly what you're talking about. I too would love to see private message.

That's actually not a bad solution for a onetime future message. So you encrypt the message externally and post the encrypted message. Then in the future, copy the encrypted message back into the external encryption tool for decoding. Very cool, thanks teamsteem!

@benjojo, what an awesome idea my friend. I love the idea of leaving a message for daughter to read at a future date. Steem On my brilliant friend.

Thanks bud! Really glad you like the idea. I know we could still do it transparently, the truth is, I think i'd be a bit embarrassed. I'm silly like that :)
