Bridging the Gap with Steem!

in steem •  8 years ago  (edited)

Hello!

This is @clains and @spectral . Together we founded BitSpace. In this post we will talk about how Steemit Bridges the Gap between early adopters and early mainstream users. Then we'll talk about how we are doing our part for the success of Steem and cryptocurrencies.

Steemit

Steemit is bridging the gap between the cryptocurrency enthusiast and the mainstream user. People who know nothing about Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies can easily sign up and start earning money by posting and upvoting content.

By bridging this gap, another gap opens up: The gap between the cryptoeconomy and the old economy. To bridge this gap we need gateways where users can trade back and forth between cryptocurrencies (e.g. Steem dollars) and fiat currencies (e.g. dollars).

The Gap Between Early Adopters and Early Majority

In the cryptocurrency space, we have for a long time seen a chasm between the early adopters and early majority:

Technology enthusiasts and visionaries are developing and using the technology, not concerned about immediate practical use. But to get from that population to the early majority you have to create a product that has practical value right now, and that’s what Steemit has achieved.

The Gap Between the Old Economy and the Cryptoeconomy

This is another gap yet to bridge. If we look at STEEM trading, only about half a percent of the total volume is traded on the decentralized exchange BitShares. Most of the volume is traded on centralized cryptocurrency exchanges like Poloniex and Bittrex.

While these are great exchanges vital to the existence of Steemit and the STEEM currency, there are certain problems with centralized exchanges.

In a centralized exchange, all the deposits, withdrawals and market data, exist in a black box from the user perspective. There is an all-powerful centralized entity, usually in the form of a company, responsible for everyone’s money. We have seen earlier that such centralized trust can lead to disaster. One example is the famous Mt.Gox scandal where hundreds of thousands of Bitoin were lost or stolen, due to the vulnerability of centralized control.

This situation is creating artificial bottlenecks for the growing cryptoeconomy, in addition to centralizing the flow of value through middlemen. We’re kind of stuck in an old world / new world limbo, with an unsatisfactory solution for bridging the old centralized economy with the new decentralized economy.

The main problem is that when Steemit users want to exit from the cryptoeconomy into the traditional economy, or go from the traditional economy into the new cryptoeconomy, they have to interact with the world of laws and regulations.

To bridge this gap we need a hybrid solution that can be part of the old economy, complying with regulations like KYC/AML, while existing on a decentralized network with nobody in charge.

Is such a solution possible? Yes. In fact, it already exists!

BitShares Decentralized Exchange

BitShares was the first major project created by the co-founder of Steemit, Daniel Larimer. You can think of it as a financial trading platform where you can trade anything and transfer it to anyone.

BitShares bridges the gap by allowing Gateways to comply with regulation, while interacting directly with the rest of the network.

These Gateways can supply the system with regulated FIAT currency that can interact directly with the cryptocurrencies in the system. You can see the gateways represented by the trusted currencies they supply at the edges of the network.

Since BitShares as a platform is completely open there are many new interfaces (wallets) being developed, including OpenLedger, MoonStone and BlockPay, as well as our own BitGate Wallet. You can see a picture of the OpenLedger wallet below:

STEEM and BitShares Gateways

What we still need is more gateways. Both for Steem and BitShares.

Ideally the cryptoeconomy will grow to have crypto-gateways in most countries in the world. If you want to participate and set up a gateway in your own jurisdiction, we encourage you to do so, and please don’t hesitate to contact us! Here is more information on how to do so:

http://bytemaster.github.io/update/2014/12/18/Benefits-of-Being-a-BitShares-Gateway/

The Steem platform benefits from more gateways making it easier for users to invest and cash out their STEEM and STEEM Dollars, increasing liquidity and making it more attractive to participate and earn.

Hopefully the Steem project is the start of a whole new era of mainstream application based on cryptocurrencies. Gateways can expand to include any number of other currencies and assets that will exist in the future, enabling a transition from the old to the new economy.

BitSpace

BitSpace is a company started by @clains and @spectral with the aim to bridge the gap between the cryptoeconomy and the old economy. We do this by providing knowledge through consulting, courses and workshops, and work on projects that offer services related to the mission.

Here we are at Oslo Blockchain Day holding a full day workshop with several core Bitcoin community members in Oslo:

We also got superhero @witness.svk @svk to host a session on issuing assets on BitShares:

Overall BitSpace is positioning itself as the go-to blockchain hub in Norway, particularly with regard to Graphene (BitShares/Steem) technology. With the BitGate project, we’re also focused on becoming the largest cryptocurrency gateway provider in Norway.

What is BitGate?

BitGate is our Gateway to the cryptoeconomy based out of Norway. The gateway will make it easy for Steemians to trade in and out of Bitcoin, Steem, Steem Dollars, BitShares, Euros or Dollars, and for Norwegian Steemians using the norwegian NOK currency. We’ve developed this idea over a long time and have waited for the right opportunity.

In June this year we got an opportunity to pitch our BitGate project in front of several panels of expert judges. The pitch was overwhelmingly successful, and we realized that the time was right to start working full-time on BitGate.

The next day we proceeded to win the Fintech Challenge at Oslo FinTech Week, pitching in front of a panel of bankers and FinTech Experts. For winning the challenge, we automatically qualify for the Fintech Factory accelerator and pre-accelerator program. We also get to pitch the project at Oslo Innovation Week in October, which we are very excited about.

Soon after we got our first seed investor in BitSpace and we are currently preparing for the FinTech accelerator program. We’re really excited about the project and the synergies between our company BitSpace, the gateway BitGate, the financial platform BitShares and of course Steemit!

Very well written great job! Did you find out about this from your friend at school? I saw the video of your friend in the photo you guys are smart wish I could go to that class he was teaching in!

We are brothers. :)

Oh nice even better! Maybe you will both become Millionaires! hope so because that means I will be worth a lot too!

nice

it takes two to tangle

👍nice post @bitspace, very interesting, keep up ur work

The day Steemit can provide users with an experience that doesn't require any prior knowledge of Crypto is the day it will replace current social media platforms. I think that day is coming.

Absolutely agree with you. And that is our goal with BitGate and BitSpace!

Nice done guys.
Lock forwoard to the results.
You from Norway also?

We sure are. We're helping build the cryptocommunity here in Oslo!

Nice, cool that you make something here in Norway.
I wondering how long time it takes, to get BTC etc into shopp.
Is not manny that aksept BTC in Norway yett.

Norway will probably not be among the first countries to embrace cryptocurrencies for direct payment. We have a heavily banked population with good access to easy-to-use payment services. Countries that have underbanked populations have more interest in using crypto for payments right now.

As an investment and trading vehicle, however, as well as an interesting playground for enthusiasts, there is a lot of interest in cryptocurrencies in Norway, and that's why we believe that a gateway for BitShares and STEEM has great potential in this country.

Agree with you there. Norway does not have as many opportunities currently for Bitcoins etc. Yes some countries that are struggling with bank and similar unfortunately. But good for crypto world it happens like that, then you get more confidence in such Currencies.

Yes I think Steem can do it very well, is the brand new so is not on so many users here yet. But fremmtiden and long term investment then I think we can go far. I see the two of you want help with a drastic increase in the use of Bits Hares and Steem. I think att it is this that makes such projects valuable. You are doing a wonderful job. And stands for and reach one goal with this.

I can not wait to see where we are about 1 year. Great opportunities in this Networks.
Thanks for what you do, appreciate it.

same here.

It sounds interesting - are you going to add support for pounds sterling?

That is certainly an option! Our plan is to start out with the norwegian NOK, then proceed to support USD and EUR. Now with Brexit and all, maybe the GBP will be a better bet than the EUR! :)

There is definitely a gap in the market due to Brexit. At present I, as a Brit, have to sell bitcoins on Kraken for euros, and then use SEPA to send the euros to my sterling bank account (the bank does the conversion). I don't know if Britain will have the option of using SEPA once we officially Brexit - so if an exchange like yours could do direct payments in sterling, there would be a lot of Brits interested.

Seconded I have the same problems

That is very interesting! Thanks for this insight, we will be sure to look into the GBP!

Something very new to me in cryptocurrency. M seeing all these are gonna be big in the future. You guys are superb and always with great ideas! Steem on guys!

Question for you: You mention early adopters and early mainstream users ... if I understand correctly Steemit it is about 3 months old now. What would the cutoff be to be considered to be early adopters? Is this referring to the investors prior to it being released as a public beta? Thanks, asking more out of curiousity then anything.

Yeah, Steemit is fresh out of beta, and that's when the early adopters started streaming in. We believe that Steemit is still in the early adopter phase, and we have yet to see the early mainstream embrace it. Also, we believe that more streamlined withdrawal/deposit services are needed in order for Steemit to reach that crowd. And that's what we aim to address with our gateway.

Yes the ability to go straight from Steem to USD or other main currencies is a must in my opinion to get a mass following like the likes of Facebook or the large social websites.

nicely asked question.

Remember when i read about bitspace for first time.
I was think: Wow what a fantastice idea.
And now i seen you have great sucess! Really nice to see this.
This only confirm that we should always believe in our dream's!

Thank you for your support! :)

i like to see Doge on the infographics 8]
great update @bitspace keep it up!

Awesome that you noticed! Makes it all that much more worthwhile :)

Cool to know these things are happening in Oslo! It's where I live. Looking forward to see how you'll bridge the gap and how bitspace will evolve

Awesome, you should come to our next meetup/workshop! Join us here:

Thanks!

I could not be more excited for you two and the project you are working on. I hope you can use the funds to further your research and development and gain the viewership of many others. Blockchain technology is here to stay and you are making a wise move to innovate it and bring it to the masses. Much success to you!

Thank you! :)

Great info, we are truly in interesting times in crypto, maybe the calm before the storm. Nice graphics showing this gap that exists and the need for something to close it, Steemit and Bitshares are important here seeing how many people are using crypto for the first time. Nice job!

I agree, these are truly interesting times. It is like the world is waiting for answers on many questions. Will Steem be the blockchain application to finally break into mainstream? Will Bitcoin scale? What will happen to Ethereum Classic? So many questions and when the answers finally come, it could trigger an explosion in interest :)

A really informative and well written post! Thank you guys for sharing your insights about the future of economy.

Interesting read. Looking forward to seeing how this devolops

same thought here

You have long way to go to bridge the gap. But up-voted Good luck with it.
You have my support.

Welcome ! Steemit need more creative Crypto Enthusiast!
Hats off to you both!

Congratulation @clains and @spectral. Graphene technology is the only crypto-technology offering performance, scalability and design to be economically viable....Period. BitShares , Steem and PeerPlays teams are showing it by building solutions that poeple need thus bridging the gap between technology enthusiast and early adopters. I support BitSpace and the BitGate project to offer more gateway to the global crypto community.

Graphene is certainly a fantastic invention whose implications we've only seen the beginning. We're really excited about the prospect of the many-chains paradigm. Thank you for your insight and support!

Norway is a lucky country for having you guys. I confess I cannot foresee or predict what the results will be but I feel complete success coming in your way!

Thank you, your kind words are appreciated!

This is really great and we can see the future on cryptocurrency. There is a lot of potential and it's great to see efforts being made as you have done! Thanks!

is likely to become very good at all

Bridges are a necessary until people and merchants start using crypto currencies without the need for a "trusted" middleman. ie without first switching over to "fiat". Steem with it's $teem dollar is helping early adopters make this transition because they don't have to convert something like .000275 into something more meaningful. Every transition requires a "device" to bridge the gap. The music industry went through this with the eight track -> cassette player and then the cassette -> CD player.

Similarly, there are new crypto "devices" coming onboard, like the many bitcoin -> debit/credit cards . People HOLD their coins and spend them as required. Examples are e-coin.io and advcash.com.

cryptocapital.co is also attempting to fill the gap by reducing bank friction.

Keep up the great work.

Awesome to see others working toward the same goal! Great analogy with the music industry and "devices" to bridge the gap. We are definitely in a such a transitional period now - the cryptoeconomy is the future of finance. :)

You've set lofty goals to unity crypto and fiat with direct transactions. I look forward to the day when STEEM conversions to fiat through the exchange can be made transparent to the end user.

I am really interested into BitShares and how it can help Steem and other features. I am an NXT guy and have also seen some of these talks on the Asset Exchange and tokens for making a trustless platform. I am still at edge on using OpenLedger for Bitshares but maybe Bitsquare could also be a good alternative. I installed Bitsquare a couple of weeks ago but the markets are really not there yet. Hopefully more people will jump in it.

Interesting post. I enjoyed reading about what you are doing with BitSpace. I am now following @bitspace, @clains, and @spectral. I look forward to following your work.

It sounds like you envision crypto-currency usage to one day become a mainstream form of payment, and BitSpace is working on making that happen. Is that correct? It seems that while currently there are still very few people who see it as a legitimate form of currency, one day it may become as mainstream as paying with a credit card. I think it's totally awesome, and definitely within the realm of possibility.

I'm curious what you think of this guide I created. I saw a growing number of people getting involved in Steemit with little-to-no Bitcoin/crypto-currency experience, and yet a lot of excitement about the possibility the site has to offer. While a lot of us see the process of buying Steem with Bitcoin as a simple process, it does not look that way to a lot of people. Wallets, crypto-currency, and even Bitcoins are still a foreign concept to many of the people that are signing up for the site. With the help of this guide, I am hoping that we can get more people to participate in the purchase of Steem/SP, even though they may not have any prior experience with Bitcoin or digital currency.

All whales in that room , im suprise that room fit for so many whales .. So wow such shibes many whales ! :p

This is not how Steem is supposed to work. We upvote posts because we like the content - it's not meant to be an act of reciprocation.

hello nice post friend

Great news! Bridging that gap is essential not only to Steem / BitShares but the whole crypto ecosystem.

So how exactly does the gateway pay users fiat? Is it with a bank transfer, or PayPal, or maybe using a debit card?

For now, we're looking to support wire transfer, mobile payment and credit/debit cards, but ultimately we will add support for any practical payment method. Paypal would be amazing!

this what the community wants anyway, cos we will love to see that the tradition way of economy translate to the new digital economy

beautiful but wish to see powerpoint in video centered.

That would be nice, but for now, check out our blog post. It has a link to the slides from Oslo Blockchain Day:
http://bitspace.no/index.php/2016/05/02/bitspace-presentation-at-oslo-blockchain-day/

My brother told me about this site a few days ago so I opened a profile for the fun of it... he knows I like to write and create random content so this is a great place to do so; however I have no clue how it works and I'm rather obtuse when it comes to anything remotely technical; as such, it's really hard for me to follow your work but I recognize you're work is, well... awesome. I mean, it's creative, user-friendly, clearly written with passion and so I figured I'd just write this comment 'cause such work deserves kudos.

Hi, thanks for the great post. I've heard that something is coming up in the bitshares world, kind of like how payments started on July 4th with Steem. What exactly is coming up, and would it be best to buy into bitshares BEFORE that happens? Thanks

Fantastic! More gateways are sorely needed so great to hear about your progress!

Poloniex isn't polish exchange.
