It's almost one month I'm back on Steemit.
It's almost one month I'm trying to get back all pieces of information I missed last year, updating my knowledge about cryptocurrencies and, more in general, about how Steemit works right now.
Therefore, I spent hours watching videos, reading comments and stuff, and one of the most common advice I've found is "commenting on whales' post to get their attention and, potentially, get new followers. Sometimes it works out, sometimes not, some other you can simply receive an upvote for your comment...The thing is: what's the subtle line between adding value to the community, and stuffing someone else's posts with useless comments to get a hint of an inch of visibility?
This "lick-ass" dynamic might procure some gains, but on the other side, it is a really poor way to use Steemit. It's the same pattern we see in our society: an obliging mass which learned how to smile and say good things when "necessary", but not when THEY want to. So, again, consent be manipulated? Yes, of course. Choosing is way harder than just following.
I'm not saying that every comment posted on good authors is totally useless, but just scroll down yourself the comment section below some whales' post and you'll see some funny ones. For instance, there's a pretty popular Vlogger here on Steemit which I use to follow. His yesterday's post wasn't as great as usual, he received tons of upvotes and comments though. I started reading them and there were a bunch of newbies saying things like "what a great contribution to the community!" or "this post is amazing"...
Actually, the guy just wrote a few lines about the time he spent with his family during Christmas holidays, like thousands of other users did. The same users that didn't get a single upvote for their post and, no matter how frustrating has been for them, they go spreading fake good vibes to the same people they have been ignored by. Sorry if I sound too much moralistic, Steemit is a great opportunity to gain money, but PLEASE, let's start the change using these new features in the best way possible, instead of reproducing the slavery system which has chained most of us for decades.
Leave your opinions below if you want to say something about that, and if you like the topic check out also
this post...
Cheers!
Licking asses is never a good thing.. its just dirty and leads to infection. If its an accident then okay, move along, but otherwise just plain dirty.

There was a time I wanted to start doing all that.... Hoping to get noticed... But something kept me back... My pride. In real life... Ion lick azz.... Why should I fake myself here by doing it?
Now all I do is stroll around the hallways of steemit, when I see a post I like, I check it out... Upvote.. Comment and my day is fine...
Most peeps are not saying things they wanna say.
A whale posted a very confusing topic once... Being a minnow.. I couldnt understand a thing. I went in.. Reading like twice, still didnt make sense to me.... Then I commented "I dont even understand a thing this post says"
Sure got me attention..... Maybe if i had ass licked... I wouldnt have gotten any.
The things is to be Natural.

It's a reflection of who they are in their real life.
There are people out here who will find the closest coat-tails, and hold on for dear life. I think a lot of the whales, and minnows here too, are smart enough to know a well thought out meaningful comment from a boot-licking comment. Some people will put in the hard work and be rewarded, some people will look for a shortcut. A few of the people will find a way around the hard-work and get lucky, but the vast majority are going to realize one day there is no shortcut to anything worth doing.

I personally try to upvote every comment (avoiding spam of course) - even if it's just 2 cents- because I want to reward who put an effort by giving a contribution to the conversation, no matter I agree with it or not. Paraphrasing what you said, laziness is still a big problem in our society. =)

people comment irrelevant stuff on my post all the time sometimes I have to read it again to make sure they didn't just have an issue translating to English but usually its just some copy past nonsense

well, for my part @lukestokes has deserved the succes he has here on steem and he has written a lot of very usefull posts so adding a personal one once in a while is not so bad in my opinion
there are a lot worse things written here on this platform. I tend to comment on his stuff but mostly because what he writes is usefull and well thought through so why not comment on his family posts as well

I don't know who @lukestrokes is but I'll check out his profile now. I didn't mention whom I was referring to in my post because it would have just been useless pointing the finger at someone who's, btw, doing a great job every day. It was just an example, you can find plenty of them on this platform. Also, I don't think it's the only and one problem, neither the bigger. It's just a shade I've noticed and I wanted to focus the attention on. ;)
