It just came to me: I missed out on millions by overlooking Steem..

in steem •  8 years ago  (edited)

In general I am very happy to be a part of something as big and innovative as Steemit, I have also made some good money out of it and I suspect there is some more to come (reason why I am not powering down), I am here for the long haul, however I had a major shower thought yesterday that literally left me astonished…

astonished

I still remember when steem came out, I am a big bitshares fan (platform also created by @dan) so I read it first on a bitsharestalk. At that time I was working with Bitshares Argentina to create the first decentralized Argentine smartcoin (a smartcoin which is now live and can be bought and sold at OpenLedger as BitARS). We worked very hard on getting support from Committee members, code the coin and provide a price feed, so naturally I was a bit surprised and worried about the creator and some of bitshares most prolific developers working on a new platform.

I thought, I put all of this time and effort into a platform that is going to be left behind?, I have to admit that to a certain degree I was upset and didn`t want to have anything to do with this new coin called steem, I was in fact making some of the same mistakes most crypto aficionados make all the time: thinking your coin is better than the next and refusing to embrace new projects.

Back then I was already running a Bitshares node so I knew how to set up a steem witness node and mine (since it is the same Graphene tech), but I was skeptical and maybe even bitter to some extent, so NO I did not mine in the very early stages, if I did I could easily have 100.000 Steem now, or more.. back then it was a matter of getting a few average vps and running the miner!..

It took me 2 weeks to get myself together and join Steem, started mining, running a node, writing, voting and giving my opinions about the future of the platform.

Why did I change my mind?

Well I basically saw so many good developers working on steem, so many developers that I already trusted from bitshares that had even helped me in the past when I had a compiling issue or whatever. I thought if the likes of @xeroc, @abit, @blocktrades and @svk are here, this really can´t go wrong and it is most definitely not a scam.

I don´t want to be greedy

So even as I write this I feel kind of bad, it’s a weird feeling knowing that if I would have been a bit wiser I could have secured years of financial stability, but my time in crypto has tought me to be wary about new projects and I let that get the best of me.

I don´t want to be ungreatfull for everything that steem has given me, I still believe steemit has a huge growth potential and even the people who join today will be early adopters and have the possibility of being part of a billion dollar enterprise. So I am at peace and happy with myself, but I wanted to write this down and share my thoughts with this great community.

All of this kind of reminds me of a video posted by @cryptogee (the one where the person wins but wishes he should have made a bigger bet), so I will finish with a great quote from “the Gambler”

John vowed never to put such a small amount of money on a bet again…

Great write-up chitty! Btw I noticed your other post from a while ago about 'Raspberry Pi'...

I've just made a tutorial myself, maybe you like it:
Should you ever want to livestream, you could also use a Raspberry Pi for HD streaming... I've explained it how to do in How I made a $50 HD Livestream Camera with a Raspberry Pi and Youtube. Let me know if you have questions about this topic!

Thanks, I like playing with the raspi from time to time.. will check it out!

Hell yeah! The RPi is an awesome machine. I'm using it as a console emulator right now (OldSchoolCool!), but the potential it has at this price point is amazing.

Neat! I'm going to have to look into this technology for sure.

so good,thanks

As a very early investor in Ethereum I can say I know how you feel. I made a very good amount of money with ETH. However I could have made much more. Maybe, double ...triple what I made. (would have had to sell a few things) ...however thats not how winners think. This is what you must understand. Just keep your head up and focus on what you have. Really appreciate what you have right now. Because let me just say this....we are the 1% who know about this right now...there are a ton of people in worse shape than us financially around the world at the moment. So take a second and appreciate where you are and what you are apart of. It took me some time too. This journey has been one of the most powerful roller coaster rides of emotion in my life. It takes a ton of perseverance to stay focused and motivated in this game. Always learn from your past and never look back...dont let it hold you down use it as fuel to move you forward. Hope this helps.

In case you missed this, I am selling my car: https://steemit.com/forsale/@kingjohal/selling-my-car-for-steem-btc-usd-used-2006-chrysler-300-touring-usd8888

Please take a second to check out my story if you have time.

Thank you!

I went through this same thing (different scenarios) two separate times with Bitcoin.

I know the pain.

That said, Steem is still low right now, great time to buy.

Actually, it's current design, for a social media, looks terrible, so at that level they really need to put some work in it

Welcome to Steem! Don't worry you'll still make millions hopefully this is just getting started!

It is better to be late that not to come! Do not think about the money that you might have won, think the one that you will be able to gain, steemit be beginning! Now the better thing comes.! Spirit!.

My husband said the same today...

I think I have made EXACTLY the same mistake. I was very active in bitshares community for something like 9 months, and when Steem just born I felt... betrayed :(

Funny thing is, that right now I think, that steem can actually save bitshares in the long term.

Remember one thing, and I am keeping reaping that to myself: the most important thing in being a milliner is the knowledge how to earn first million, not a million itself.

Thats what Dan was saying but no one wanted to listen.

Nice to have you here! It's early enough buddy ;)

example seeing impaired TEXT
And This is what the early steemer feel like lol.

Thanks Chitty that made me feel calmer

Good post. I totally feel on the wasted coins .. I remember mining BTC via CPU as a joke and later deleting them .. jokes on me.

nooooooo!!!! I dont know if I could ever get over that haha

thanks for the post, its hard to know what is a "disruptive" crypto and what isn't really bringing anything new to the table...The volatility today in Steem shows it is full STEEM-ahead.....I love the concept and think this will catch on like wild fire...volatility will remain but I agree that those that join even today on to Steem and support it will see that they are indeed early adopters and pioneers! Yay Steem! Go baby go!

Haha, classic Chitty!

I have been getting the same thing and I've only been here 2 months, I was thinking the other day, if only I had hung on another week, before cashing out that Steem!! :-)

Nice quote from John by the way; my fave! :-D

CG

great thoughts, the right time is now in my opinion, anytime before now, failure was more possible. I stayed on the sidelines watching for past 6 weeks, then started blogging a week before the July 4 payout so I can experience getting paid, last night I finally went all in

Hey no worries man I was there too with Ethereum and Siacoin.. I just couldn't understand why after the new releases and the bitcoin halving they weren't skyrocketing..

I mean Ethereum went up a minute but since I've been on Steemit for like a week I haven't thought to even look at my other social sites.. Until today and saw ETH going down.

I then realized STEEM was probably the reason why too.. because before Steemit there was no way to earn crypto for "normal" people, and now that people can be involved in a social platform that allows them to express their creativity AND get paid crypto for it!

Steemit has taken crypto currency and social networking to the next level.. and I don't think there is anything in the digital world right now that can even compete :D

yea, I couldn't sleep thinking about it. this was cents days ago now is 3 dollars.

I do believed in steemit and have a great feeling

We all have to start somewhere. Appreciate what potentials you actually have, what things you actually have, and to look ahead. Do the best you can. And hope for the best result. We are ALL still forerunners here.

You still have a lot

https://steemd.com/@steem

Hey man. Why do you think you missed out ? Watch this video:

There is 1 guy that invested 20.000 dollar on bitcoin when it was at around 1$, the current price of STEEM. He is rich now. You still came in at the right moment. So don't worry, there is still a lot you can gain here.

20 x $670 == $13,400 ... I don't think I'll go as far as considering that to be "rich". Maybe 5 years from now.

I think that 20.000 = 20,000 Mr. Ken M.

20,000$ x 1$ = 20,000$ = 20,000 BTC before - after 20,000 BTC X 670$ = 13,400,000 $
he's quite rich ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I love the VPRO Backlight documentaries... The one on Bitcoin was pretty good as well to explain Bitcoin to the masses

Thanks for sharing this diego24. That was great watch. I love how passionate Roger Ver is

I overlooked steem too. Who knew? I have a blog post that talks about where this is all going, with proof here:

https://steemit.com/steem/@intelliguy/bitcoin-and-steem-are-both-going-up-this-month-just-watch

The good news, is that ALL OF US are earlybirds to the game in July 2016. All of this is going somewhere huge.

I know that feeling many times over, its about getting the balance right between skepticism going with your instincts.

I know the feeling dude :p

Welcome @chitty ! Hopefully, you continue Steeming here for a very long time.

Here are some posts to help you get more traction and exposure to your Steemit posts, startup, business or self:

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you become more successful!

I had the same feeling watching the price skyrocket. I saw Steemit a week or two ago and didn't pay any attention to it. Kicking myself big time now.

Welcome man! I'm also from latin america.

cool, de donde eres?!

EDIT: nevermind, reading your intro post right now

To be precise, you are just getting started.

Its still not too late you know, If you believe in Steemit and observe its growth rate you know that its just the beginning of something HUGE and it may overtake Bitcoin capitalization someday !

Nice!

You should look into NXT or Waves. Both platforms look promising, they've been on a steady climb and the price isn't too bad right now.

Agree. NXT is so full of potential. And its a very complex , private-run blockchain project. I think we are witnessing the year of the maturing blockchain ecosystems.

You know, I'm hoping it is still early enough as I just joined Steemit and bought $20 worth of Steem Power with my paltry Bitcoin earnings. I'm wondering if you can mine this with an Android tablet.

Most are still overlooking Bitshares..

You're not alone! I missed the best time to invest as well! Sigh...

Steem it is a place where we can invest our ideas

I just joined after hearing about the growth this week. This is all new to me, but an exciting concept to say the least.

Very good job!

Nice write up, chitty. Thanks for sharing your experience. But be mindful that you are still early for those that will arrive tommorrow.

Don't kick yourself.

The best time to plant a tree is now...

Thanks for the thoughtful post.

I was late too :(

I think many did the same mister chitty. Your post was interesting. It distracted me from being stranded in Bangkok without money.
I also wrote a post about what happend to me.

FOMO is always inescapable with things like this, eh?

It is always easy to look back at a coin after it skyrockets and think "gee.. why didn't I get into this sooner." It has happened to people with Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dark/Dashcoin, Ethereum and now Steem. At least getting in a little late is better than missing the boat completely!

And it will have many pumps as time goes by, because the the demand is higher. basic economics

I do believed in steemit and have a great feeling that it is here for the long run.
