Looking In From The Outside

When we look at Steem we see a community of many nationalities all communicating in English. I would say in the high 90 percents anyway. This is a handicap to many who don't have English as their mother tongue. Steem is hard enough to understand and I am an English speaker.

I think this could be the cause of why so many accounts struggle to grow and not understanding the platform properly and then leave. I engage with many users from across the world whose knowledge in the use of the English language is probably better than the average English speaker. It is good to see some of the apps doing translations now so they can cater to more than one language. This will help break down the barriers that I think existed for some.English is spoken in many countries today but not everyone is comfortable writing in English and the users here in this position I admire you for being braver than me.

I admire the users with foreign language skills and have asked myself if Steem was in another language besides English would I be here today? Honestly the answer would most likely be a big NO. I think it would scare me off for sure as I am not great with languages and it would be too daunting for someone like me. I am not someone who picks languages up easily even though I know another one Afrikaans ,which is not very useful outside of South Africa. Personally I wish I knew French or Spanish so at least I could get some use out of it in the future.

Look at the likes of @anomadsoul, @erikah, @markkujantunen and @exyle just to name a few and reading what they write you would struggle to know that English isn't their first language. Not every user is up to their standards though and are using Steem to learn English which will help them improve going forward. I have no problem engaging with someone who doesn't have perfect English as they are doing better than me if I was trying to communicate in their language.

Steem is a learning tool in many more ways than most of us see it. Breaking down the language barriers for some though is their biggest challenge and I think this is where most users have struggled.I think in time we will see more apps like @wherein which will make things a little easier for those communities where you can communicate using your mother tongue with other users in your community.

When we look at Steem in this way we do start to realise what is lacking to make it more appealing for mass adoption. If everything is in English then those people who don't speak it need their own communities in order to understand this place a lot more easily. Over time I think we will find more of these communities popping up.

Communities are key. Spanish speakers are a big group and while many of them know English well some don’t.

I’ve stumbled across many people from Venezuela.

I was going to comment but quite literally couldn't understand a word you wrote. Google translate was no help even though I selected Afrikaans

You're right on point! I work with @davinci.witness and our translators translate open source projects into more than 19 different languages. A lot of people simply don't realize how important translations are, because English is used by so many people, they take things for granted.
However, the Asian market takes more than 60% with Chinese filling 75% of that. That's a HUGE number of people who don't have English as their first, or even second language. And the Spanish speaking community is huge too. In order to spread blockchain tech and crypto to more people, there is a huge need for translations.
I really hope people are going to realize that soon.

I believe this place would grow overnight as there is a huge opportunity to welcome everyone in then. English is huge but so are other languages and you are right English is not necessary there second language and in some cases is in 4th or even 5th. They can speak it but can't necessarily write it.

Personally, I want to see more people using their native tongue on this blockchain. It would truly foster the global nature of this community, and help people who don't speak English grow their accounts. Who knows, maybe someone will see a post in another language and try to learn that language?

We should encourage non-English speakers to build communities, much in the same way we build our own right now. Not because I think less of them for trying to use a language they don't understand, mind. I want this because I want to see everyone posting in a language that they are comfortable using. Such an effort will grow the site far more than we give it credit.

I think you are right as it would then include everyone and not a small percentage of a blogging community who can write in English. I know how hard some of the users try and it is appreciated. I would also like to see this happen as then you will see instant growth.

I agree with you, you're right about that and thank you for appreciating my English knowledge.

As you say, it's not easy to keep up with those whose first language is English and many users don't realise that we have to work twice as harder as them native English speakers. This means twice as much energy and time but hard work always pays off and I believe what we learn here will help us in the future.

Encouraging users to form their own community is a good thing and it's beneficial to all as those who don't speak English have a chance to learn and get some support from the others.

As @misslasvegas said, they are working hard on translating open source projects and some dapps have started their own translation projects to make this place a better one for non English speakers.

I'm ok with English but I wanted to help and contribute so I'm working with @esteemapp on two languages so far and I'm going to do everything I can to contribute using my language skills.

We're at the beginning, there is a lot to do here but I believe we're on the right track and things are going to get better.

I think besides just not having a good understanding of the language, a lot of people that are not native English speakers also have a problem grasping the concept of plagiarism. I feel like I see it a lot where they are doing it and it is because they honestly don't understand what is wrong with it. I'm not saying English speakers don't plagiarize, I just don't feel they are as shocked when you call them out on it :)

Howdy sir cryptoandcoffee! I think in a few years all apps will have translators and it will really add to steemit's strength. I love that photo! lol.
