Sometimes, we have to stretch our imagination...
Here we are, popping the champagne, with a ~$5/Steem. Engagement is up, sign-up are up, alexa rankings getting better, traffic going through the roof. It's good times.
But yesterday, I had fun comparing what Steem could be when it will be it's in "mature" form.
A lot of people compare steemit.com to Facebook...and I think it's a sub-optimal way to look at things when we want to see what is the true worth of the steem blockchain.
Google is a better comparison
The more apt comparison would be to compare Steem with something like Google. Google is an agglomeration of multiple technologies and services that stacks on top of each other. It has search, analytics, advertising, social media, email, chat, live streaming, etc.
Steem is more than steemit.com...it's an agglomeration of all the businesses that stacks on top of it. It solved multiple problems at once. It does instant and free transactions, allows to incentivizes behaviors on social media and probably does other things that we haven't even considered yet. (think cryptokitties)
So far we have:
- Steemit
- D.Tube
- Dsound.audio
- Esteem
- Steepshot
- Utopian.io
- Zappl
NOTE: All of those project do not have ways to sign-up people directly...IMAGINE what will happen when any projects can onboard their own users!
Alphabet(Google) Market Cap is 770.25B
Google market cap alone is bigger than the whole cryptocurrency market cap put together(718B)...for now.
In the next 5 to 10 years, we will see massive adoption of the blockchain and STEEM arrived just at the right time to capitalize on this future growth. We are way ahead of any competitor who might attempt to figure out how to do what we do now.
I am confident that with all the services that will be built on top of STEEM, that we could see STEEM in the future reach similar heights. That would mean, discounting STEEM inflation, that STEEM could potentially be worth $3121/steem.
No one that is here right now would complain that they weren't there at the ground floor. 😂
$3121/STEEM is impossible?
3 years ago, you would have told me that bitcoin would reach $20,000 I would have told you to take a walk...especially because in my mind it was so flawed. But here we are and people are already talking about $100,000 + per bitcoin.
We fundamentally do not know what we are tapping into with this technology and how disruptive it is. STEEM being worth as much as Google is not too big of a leap when you consider what it can do for social media alone (discounting what it can do to payment and money transfer)
It's not in it's final form yet
Don't get me wrong, STEEM has a lot of maturing to do. It has many flaws that makes it sub-optimal right now. But everyday, people are working at making it better. I have no doubt that with time, what we complain about now will subside and make place for incredibly innovative solutions.
Get ready because it's going to be a wild ride in the next 5 years.
I get teased about my absurd claims yet not even I have ventured into $3K+ STEEM ($1K is my max so far).
People do not realize how big the blockchain market will become.
There are a couple ways to look at it.
To start, blockchain is 100x more powerful and disruptive than the Internet was. Since that ended up as a siloed system, innovation was stifled. Now, with decentralization, there are thousands if not tens of thousands of developers working on blockchain all over the world.
Cisco did a study and concluded that the Internet is worth $19T (this was a few years ago). 100X that and you get over a quadrillion dollars. Is that possible? It could be.
The second way to look at this is to consider that the entire GDP of the world in 10 years, with AI and other tech, be over $100T...maybe even closer to $125T. At that time, 90% of all commerce will be done on the blockchain. So is a 10 multiple outrageous?
If not, then you top a quadrillion again.
At that point, a blockchain worth a few trillion is nothing.

Man bots are gonna be a huge part of the work force. Some people are speculating that AI will 1) make humanity largely unemployable, and 2) that the AI's income will have to be garnished to pay for a Universal Basic Income to prevent wide spread looting and starvation from the massive unemployment. Interesting and concerning times.

The tokenized world will be the basic income. People are going to be getting paid for doing the things that they normally do. Steemit pays people to post, comment, and upvote, activities done on Reddit, Youtube, and FB everyday.
This is the first of thousands that will emerge over the next few years.

We're basically going from a society where humans did everything for farming, mining, producing, to a AI/Robotised world where we humans, that grew addicted to social media and the internet get paid to support and surf on. The richest ones being the most creative or interesting or entertaining individuals. At this point, even VR will be another beast, and simulations will be in the neighbourhood.. Add 3D printing to the mix where, eventually, people will be printing out a fair portion of what they need in the house for pennies on the dollar.
There is a ton going on and technology is moving ahead rapidly. We havent even begun to see what is going to take place.
Good point about VR....it went through the crash after the hype cycle and appears to be coming back strong....the developers seem to have made progress and are looking to bring it to market.
5G will really help that technology which will be around in 4 years (In the Western countries at least).

@taskmaster4450, agreed this is very possible, you are valuing it at the higher end on the upside as of today, but very possible. Being the pioneering force, and having a LOT of benefits over your competition, this enterprise knows no limits, on those put on it by the public investment. The public knowledge of this on the investor end is very little-from previously being nil. By the way, a 10 multiple is for companies in experimental periods with little experience of meeting street expectations. Every consecutive quarter Wall Street gets their minds together enough to start making educated projections, and this platform delivers, the sky is the limit, and yes $3121.00 steem is totally in play over the coming years. Thanks for the article, keep up the great work @cryptoctopus!

I really hate that comparison. It puts in people's mind that they can just upload links or video without any effort in hopes to make a few SBD. I prefer to compare Steemit to Medium but even that falls short a bit.
I think this works to a degree since we are able to do so much on the STEEM blockchain. This still may give the 'average Joe' the wrong idea but with a bit of explaining why we see it like a new Google it will pan out better than the old Facebook comparison.
For sure, but just as you said people are working to make it better everyday. Even I started to work on a STEEM project recently. There are so mean devs and programmers out there that are able to take this platform main stream.
Great post as always mate!

$3,000 a steem would be cool, but I'm not much for predictions. If anyone would've told me in 2011 that bitcoin would've hit $14,000 in seven years time I don't know if I would've believed you, but I think that is mostly because I thought bitcoin would be a great currency used to quickly exchange value from one person to another, I understood it was speculative, but I could've never imagined people using it as a currency if it was so expensive per coin (I guess I was kinda right about that, It's getting harder to find someone that actually uses bitcoin as a currency and not as a stock to hold).
Now a days I like cryptos that have utility (or at least the potential of one) Ether and steem (I think) will be the new paradigm (but again, I'm not much for predictions).

Personally, with all the flaws I see with Steem, I don't see it happen. But I do have to admit it's still in its premature stage and things could change in due time. If things come to mature properly and Steem is to stay the #1 in its specifc utility, then yes, it could happen. I see EOS have 1 trillion market cap 5-10 years from now (unless competetion arrives of course ^^), so it ain't too far fetched. After all, Blockchain technology is gonna revolutionize things as we know it.

I do not feel that steem will be comparable to Boogle.
Mostly, because we don't have a search engine.
(Maybe I should write one, but for that I need a lot of the developers time to ask inane questions)
I do not doubt that we will see $3121 STEEM.
But mostly because of other factors. As more money flees from fiat, we will easily 1000% increase in price.
As the US$ goes into hyperinflation, there will be people who would gladly give up $3000 US for one STEEM.
So, even without the optimism you have of where steem is going, your claim will be fulfilled.

I agree with this article completely. People are goin crazy over blockchain. No one wants to miss the opportunity to earn. With small amounts people are making big on blockchain. With more successes steem brings to common man it will attract more people on board. Imagine if 1% of planet i.e 70 mn people comes onboard over steem what will happen. If your social media skills can earn you everyday for yoh then why would people waste there time on Facebook or Twitter. They would instead come on Steemit to earn for their time on social media. Time is money as they say and steemit is paying for your time. For the first time someone is paying for your time. Enough of free comments on FB. @cryptoctopus,
You are absolutely correct. We made a huge mistake by comparing Steemit with Facebook. But today it cleared. This is not only a social media. This something bigger and better than all social media platforms. The power of 3rd generation blockchain technology also absorbed to Steem and decentralisation also there. This is just a beginning of a new era and yeah what you said, what you calculated here can be true in next couple of years time. Thank you very much for sharing this great article with us.

I really don't have trouble seeing Steem at this price but I'm confused, what made you settle on $3121? The number seems sort of arbitrary.
I really think all estimates are wild guesses at this point. The truth is that this is completely unexplored territory. I don't know what sort of metric you would use to gauge the value of this thing called Steem or any other blockchain. If one went back to the early 90s and looked for guesses on the future value of just one aspect of the internet you would find them all woefully lacking now.
$3121? I wouldn't be surprised at $31210.
Thanks for the post.

Combine these two facts with the two million SP @dlive has delegated and the therefore rising promotional possibilities and you will see another application of the STEEM blockchain with a huge potential to benefit us all ;)
Otherwise I completely agree with you on seeing tons of potential - Even though even a three digit price seems totally unrealistic(or at least unbelievable)!

Compare to Bitcoin (BTC), STEEM is not only a coin that do things better than BTC (e.g. 3 second confirmation, 10K TPS), but also an asset class that powers many popular DApps. With SMT launch it will power many media companies, therefore, in the long run, STEEM price will increase not due to speculation but due to utilization and functionalities. I believe lots of top coins will loose market value because they are competing for same niche for example, all privacy coins- DASH, XMR, BCN, ZCash, PIVX, VERGE, BitcoinDark, Zcoin. Do we really need 10 ore more coins for same purpose. STEEM is unique and has almost no competitor. Therefore, projecting $3K at three times the market cap of BTC ($750B) is not very far-fetched.

I hadn't realized that all of those projects can't on-board users directly and that at some point they will be able to. It makes sense that it would cause an explosion in the price of Steem and the use of the Steem blockchain.
The highest price I can allow myself to consider realistic right now is $300. That would put my current Steem Power holdings at around $660,000.
If we reach your price of $3121, my current holdings would be worth almost $7,000,000, so...

It is indeed the proper longer term analysis, altho you're assuming everything goes 100% perfectly. But surely it's worth having some money in Steem while it's growing.
In the shorter term, think Steem can easily go up 10x to about $80, simply bc we've already seen some other cryptos get that popular and achieve the market cap Steem would have at $80 per.
For Steem to reach beyond that, however, it's going to need to fix some things, and that always seems quite hard in crypto due to the nature of having to secure votes for everything, and votes always factor in self-interest which may not match the goal of achieving high market caps for the overall entity.
so we'd rather hear more about upcoming Steemit changes and how the witness votes are going.
But great target price, much more helpful than the chart-based stuff certain folks are posting.

You have to bear in mind that there are 240+ million more of Steem than Bitcoin, but in my opinion, price of few dozen dollars per Steem is nothing that can't be done.
Maybe in the near future, lets hope :)

Honestly... This is my first ever Steem comment and I feel like the luckiest guy ever in viewing this page. Like a life changing moment you see in a movie where the protagonist drops his jaw and stares at his screen and then runs out into the rain. Good luck everyone! John

I definitely agree Facebook is not the best analogy but being new to Steemit I used to say "its kinda like Facebook, kinda like Youtube, kinda like Reddit, kidda like Twitter" but moving forward I am going to simply copy and paste this link because I didnt know about the other apps on the Steem platform with the exception of DTube, and I had heard of Steepshot but frankly, being new, I didnt trust it because I didnt want to attach my Steemit private keys to another app, guess I can do that now that I know its part of the wider project.
Excellent post, upvoted and resteemed!

Great post!
I definitely believe that Steem has the potential to reinvent social media and online content curation. I'm sure that there are many other practical applications as well, but those are the areas where I see the most utility.
I do believe however that comparing to the likes of Google are a bit overblown. Google has wide-ranging businesses in many verticals beyond just online search and social media... they also have hundreds of other offerings and services as well. They've also had over 20 years to mature to where they are today, and Google is a far different company now than they were 20 years back.

that will be the best day when steem hits $3121,
but what if Google decides to enter into blockchain, it already has huge capital backup as you mentioned and everyone trusts it..and also all the google developed applications are widely accepted

Yeah that's true, We are lucky to have found Steemit. and yes SBD can be valuable coin as you said worth $3121/steem. But it takes some times, may be 3,4 years . But one day worth $3121/steem will be true.

I'm really looking forward to the ride! I think it's going to be great.
But anyone that thinks it's not going to be up and down is deluding themselves :)
I agree that Steem is much more than Steemit, and we don't even imagine the possibilities yet.
I think that right now part of the price for Steem is driven by an incredible euphoria in Crypto in general. I actually believe that there is a flood of 'stupid money' (buying indiscriminately because you think it's going up) in Crypto generally with a smaller impact on Steem because of the Steemit platform.
I think in the end, supply and demand will rule Steem and Steemit. But I also believe that Richard Thayler's behavior theory is in play. It'll depend a lot on how the individuals act and react how far Steemit can and will go.
I think some of the big players here will have immediate impact on the platform. As long as considered and considerate money runs the game it will run spectacularly. If some get greedy or seek prestige more than sense it could go otherwise.
Either way, I'm in. I believe in the basic goodness of people and see the potential for this platform to have enormous impact in the (near) future.
Thanks for a great post that asks and answers at the same time.

I will be happy with Steem being at $100. With the recent rise of SBD and Steem above and near $10, the possibility of Steem getting to $100 became a reasonable expectation. I am very optimistic about the future of Steem. Only thing that can really stop it is the emergence of a competition that can offer solutions for the problems Steem has.
For Steem to get to thousands there has to be some serious improvements to attact investors, new users, and advertisers. Platform seems to be too complicated for new users to adopt, many simplifications can be done. SP lock in seems to be discouraging for people to invest. The promoted feature is broken, when it could easily become a pioneer in innovation of next generation of online advertising.
But yea, with no efforts put in, I can see Steem at $100 in couple years :)

Also DLive, busy.org, dmania, bescouted, chainbb, and that's before all the SMTs start coming in with things like Appics.
If you look at the market cap of something like LBRY and compare how much better DTube is, you can already see how each of these platforms should be adding to the value of Steem.

I don't think industry realizes the huge computing power at their disposal (pretty much for free) when they use block chain technology. Most companies have to house their own servers in their own datacenters and then also have DRC (disaster recovery centers). Obviously these won't be replaced for any data that corporations wants to keep secret... but when Bob's Repairs uses Smart Contracts on the Steem Blockchain for their service repairs, they won't need anything more than a laptop to process those. It's a massive cost saving as the computing load is shared by thousands of witnesses.
I have no idea how this is all going to pan out... but I think miners/witnesses will do okay in the long run.

Evrything above 100 dollar will be amazing hard to imagine how far bitcoin, etherium ,Steem can go.
At the current time everything seems to be connected, bitcoin goes down all other altcoins move down as well.
Maybe we will finally see some break out in this trend , and Steem can become something bigger.
time will show and people will be tested if they cash out or if they will Hodl long term and go for the full distance with steem :)

As long as steemit remains pay to win it won't gain traction among serious users of social media, just my opinion. I do think it can rival the utility of google's platform as long as their products keep getting worse and worse and steemit's get better by the day, but it seems like some moves lead to sideways or even downwards growth patterns. I think it's important to note that tech has experienced a bubble thanks to all of the spare money floating around because of crazy monetary policy.
All cryptos have the issue that until their real-world use cases cover a complete supply chain scenario then consumers cannot use it to replace fiat, and neither can producers, and as such their value will always be exposed to an ecosystem of both external and internal speculation and arbitrage. As long as people fight to increase the percent share of what they already have they will continue to stymie the growth of what could become the defacto platform on the internet, and their short-sightedness will harm adoption.

I have to disagree. It's not pay to win and that kind of thinking will keep you in the poor house. Capital is a form of value that can be brought but what has paid the most is project and value creation. Those who do that win the biggest and I can cite many example to support that.
Also, SMTs will completely change the way distribution and curation happen within communities of interest.
As for a complete supply chain, when 1 Billion people Own some steem or SMT, you won't need a complete supply chain.
More than anything, the steem blockchain is a distribution mechanism. Imagine if FB was to distribute a crypto and the ability to transfer within messengers...how long would it take for people to use it as world money? If everybody owns it and it has a monetary value, I don't see why it can't happen.

Great post. We have to be in Steem for the long haul. As someone from a family of Farmers and Teachers it's amazing how both inspiration and disruptive Blockchain technology is. This is a rare opportunity to free ourselves and our families from the FIAT money and the central back, while simultaneously changing the world for the better.

$3121 is a possible match for steem but something is lacking behind
I think steem needs it's own wallet apart from creating a steemit account, just like the blockchain wallet or lino wallet as we have here in Nigeria
I think if steem wallet is put in place, the $3121 won't be a big deal

Also add to that the fact that lot of new ICOs are starting to launch themselves based on the steemit blockchain like APPICS!! $3121 per steem is quite a bit of a fetch for now, but as you said, even last march who would have thought bitcoin was going to near $20,000. I remember even around august people were waiting to buy bitcoin once the price falls below $3000. So who knows!! :D
