Thoughts on the Soft Fork (v0.22.2)

in steem •  5 years ago  (edited)

After ten days of work of multiple people including top witnesses, community members, and some stakeholders, we have successfully rolled out the new soft fork yesterday. If you haven't seen the announcement post, please read it, first.

As a consensussometimes backup witness, I've reviewed, tested, and approved this change. In fact, I was the first witness reporting v0.22.2 :) This was a hard decision to make, I've thought a lot before approving this change. That action -censoring some ops on certain accounts- is something I hate, and I hope we will never do it again.

On the other hand, for the moment it was the best solution until we have a direct communication line with @justinsunsteemit and their intentions about the usage of the ninja-mined stake. It was a safety measure we need to take to keep the blockchain safe.

I'm not really good at politics, so won't be going to details on that subject, already gave my support and it's written on the blockchain level with the reported steemd version, and this. Posting this short statement to make sure all voters of mine are aware of my stance.

If you do not agree with this action, you can support one of the witnesses that doesn't support the new soft fork. That's perfectly normal, I've dropped from #6 to #21 (now #19, things moving fast.) after the soft fork.

At the end, Justin Sun's response was good and we're open to collaborate and make this blockchainour home a better place. I want to thank all the community members made this soft fork real. @netuoso for bringing the code in a timely manner, @drakos, @howo, @smooth, @ausbitbank, @therealwolf and many others for a good participation in the test net.

Of course, there were many more names contributing in different subjects which I cannot credit at this time, but that was a great community effort, (probably?) the first fork happened without the Steemit inc. code, and everyone put something to the table in a productive manner.

I'll be bringing my technical skills to the chain, currently working on a micro-blogging dApp on STEEM. I expect nothing but good news from that point.

If you didn't vote for my witness already, consider casting a vote on Steemconnect or on Steemit.

as long as the majority witnesses run the soft fork (11/20) then the transaction will not make it to the main chain/tree.

Hi,

I have a question.

Witnesses decided this soft fork by themselves without talking with community.
Is it right action for community?

Did you talk with staking holder and people who voted you?

Witnesses are delegatees, you delegate your stake to witnesses so that they can do the "gate keeping" of the blockchain. We've seen a threat and we have acted to keep the blockchain safe.

There was not a public discussion before that soft fork because of the level of the risk. Seeing this was a huge red-flag for example. Imagine, we discuss this on chain before that, the ninja-mined stake (promised to be stay neutral on a social contract) may single handedly rule out all witnesses, making the blockchain a one-man party.

SF doesn't nullify any account and it's reversible. We just wanted to be safe until we get a direct communication line from TRON side.

I see. I understand what you said. But, I think it is a little bit coercive.

Even if witnesses discussed by themselves (how many people included on discussion), this post includes stakeholders...

This statement has been co-authored by the Steem community, which includes witnesses, developers & stakeholders. - https://steemit.com/steem/@softfork222/soft-fork-222

Thank you for answering kindly.

While there wasn't a complete community poll, there were extensive & long open-forums where tons of members shown up ( the palnet discord literally froze on my computer after the ned & justin livestream where aggroed talked with dozens of people for hours ).

Again, it wasn't addressed by everyone, but just to put it in context, it was discussed with a lot of members and the overall consensus was in support of this move.

This action was rash, quick, intense, and a surprise. However, so was the action from SteemIt Inc. and Justin Sun. The fact that we must hold onto is Justin + SteemIt are not "normal" stakeholders. I'm not in favor of freezing accounts of random people who show up with big bags, but SteemIt Inc's stake was not "normal". Not only was it part of the ever-dreaded "ninja mined" staked, but they have also been considered the primary company behind the blockchain.

If Justin wants to transition this thinking into a more "normal" account type of situation, then that's fine, but as a community we need time to adjust. That's what happens.

give me a link so I can vote for you as a witness. I forgot how to do it lol

go to this link: https://steemit.com/~witnesses, find my name, and approve it. :)

thanks.

got it

I see both sides of the equation but I do get the reasons why it was important. There was too much that was not clear and Justin Sun did little to get involved in discourse. That said I am giving you my witness vote because I do agree with the stance so long as it is temporary.

Thank you.

Done. You are welcome. Thanks for the good work.

Justin Sun is a sociopath do not partner with him, I do not want to endorse tron by default being a Steem user.

if I am coerced into endorsing Tron I will dump all my tokens and that's sad because I have literally taken rent payments in Steem and was in this for the long hold.

Don’t worry, STEEM as a blockchain will be fine. We make sure of that.

Thank you very much. I will not sell until the logic behind this sentiment is dissolved.
