This is my collection of some Steem related resources and tips I have found on my first days using this platform
Buying STEEM
Using other cryptocurrency
The cryptocurrency exchanges I use didn't have any STEEM pairs so I had to look around. I found two anonymous exchanges (as I didn't want to spend days waiting KYC) that trade STEEM: ChangeNOW and SimpleSwap
The only real drawback I found on these sites is that the minimum amounts are rather high. It probably only matters when you try to exchange you Steem earnings.
Using credit card
ChangeNOW also accepts VISA and Mastercard.
Using Paypal (not recommended)
There are a few giftcard shops which sell Cryptovoucher and Bitnova digital gift cards and those cards can be redeemed to some cryptocurrencies which in turn can be exchanged to STEEM using the exchanges mentioned earlier. However those giftcard issuers, especially Bitnova, take fees from the gift card value and the actual amount of cryptocurrency you receive may be 5-20% less than the value on the gift card.

I don't try to re-explain how Steem voting and rewards works. I just share links to resources written by people I believe know these topics. Please note that information in this section, these formulas and strategies change over time. If you are reading this post several months after posting, you should search for newer information.

- I use this to check my share in curation rewards, just replace steemit.com with steemblockexplorer.com in post URL and you get stats for the post STEEM Block Explorer
