Like Pokemon Go, Steemit will hit even more crazy stats after the security breach
(N.B Earlier today I had an idea for this article as a follow-up to my last one. When I saw the website down a few hours ago, I remembered it, and I quickly penned this post down.
But after waiting for a while and the website still under maintenance, I decided to take a nap. It's a routine stuff, I thought.
I just woke up to see @Ned 's security announcement and I was shocked and sad at the same time.
But as I read through the amazingly honest announcement and seeing comments like this:
You're not legit until someone tries to hack you these days :)
You guys are kicking ass! Keep doing what you're doing, and keep building a fantastic community.
Transparency in this type of situation is more than we can say about the US government these days :)
My faith in humanity was restored and I'm more than convinced Steemit is just the place to be.
In a way, the fact that we're still on Beta gives a sign of even better things to come. Steem on )
A few days ago, I published a post detailing the crazy stats behind the growth of Pokemon Go and some similarities with Steemit's tremendous rise over the past few days.
I've paid attention to recent articles about Pokemon Go and one can't overlook some events that call for concern.
Earlier this week, four teenagers were recently found guilty for robbing about 11 gamers a pokestop.
How did they do it?
The Police reported that the suspects likely used the “Lure Module” to add a beacon to a Pokéstop to lure more players.
Also, recently, a security breach was found in the app that allowed Niantic full access to the Google accounts of gamers. A recent update was released. This initially crashed the game and rendered it non-accessible for several gamers.
Afterwards, another app update was released yesterday looking to patch this coding error. Gamers are advised to update the game as soon as possible.
Despite this, Pokemon GO popularity is soaring. Yesterday stats revealed that the augmented reality game has been downloaded more than several legendary games like Clash of clans etc.
Lesson
If you build a solid idea, people will use and love it despite the natural flaws.
Noticed any similarities?
How does this concern you as a steemian?
We've witnessed a tremendous surge in the popularity of steemit these past few days. Traders are flocking to the market to get a piece of the steaming meal. The worth of your hard-earned steem dollars has more than doubled and still getting valuable.
And naturally, some evil sharks are lurking………
While Steemit is built on a solid and secured platform, you as a user have to be careful too.
These posts by @pfunk will guide you on how to take care of your wallet's security.

However, as noted by Dan, unless you're paranoid, the owner key is well secured to function for all your steemit activities.
You just need to make sure:
- You don't login with a Public PC .
- You avoid visiting dubious websites
- You keep your passwords safe and secured from prying eyes
- You avoid using generic passwords that are similar to that of other websites account.
- You don't get tricked or social engineered to release your passwords
- Preferably, use a password manager. Like Lastpass. Remember, it would be very difficult to retrieve the funds in your wallet if you lose your password.
Keep Steeming. Have Fun. And Lets go conquer the world
P.S Would update this as more official information came out.
A recent update has advised all steemians to change their passwords
