I logged in today to discover a nice surprise. I've hit 500 followers here on Steemit.
As you can see from that screenshot, I first joined back in January. It took me awhile to figure it out at first. Looking back at my introduceyourself post I can see I really didn't know where this would go.
It's interesting to see Steemit progressing. While I watch Medium (which another place I like to write) flail about, looking for a sustainable content model, I have to shake my head that they aren't giving something like STEEM or the blockchain more serious consideration. I feel like I'm watching a horror movie. "No! Don't go into the barn! There's a zombie in the barn!"
Now, nine months after joining Steemit, I'm getting the hang of it (thanks to talking to @ned on my podcast. I've cashed out a few hundred dollars, my account value is above $3k, and lookie here, I've got 500 followers on here, too.
Looks like this just might work! Looking forward to seeing where things go.
Did you know I had @ned on the podcast? The episode is right here ».
wow :) congrats. You are heading to bigger fishes now

Congrats David. I've been here for 3 days and I'm getting the sense that even though I'm in "late", that I (and the rest of us) are in super early in the grand scheme of things. Decentralized content just might eat some of the larger networks.
Imagine a decentralized Twitter in which likes & retweets compensated the creator (probably on a smaller scale than on Steemit). It would be absolutely incredible and would solve an entity like Twitter's value capture problem...because the value would be captured by the network.
Cheers and good luck on here - followed.

Hi, David. Listening to episode 71 of Love Your Work today made me revisit Steemit after months of not checking it out.
I love the idea of Steemit as an experiment in using cryptocurrency to support content creators and I think it's great that it worked for you at some level. However, looking at the top and trending page I can't seem to shake the feeling that it's more of a thin slice of Reddit (a messy Reddit without subreddits) than a content publisher such as Medium. And maybe that's the reason why I (as an audience) don't find Steemit as attractive to me.
Medium solved a problem for me, which is the ability to follow a series of authors, topics, and interests, and of discovering new content that might interest me, all in one convenient location. For authors, it became a source of readers, bringing them exposure without the distraction of ads and clickbait.
Maybe it's a matter of time to see Steemit growing and evolving, and maybe Steem moving outside just its current pocket universe. Who knows?
(I would love to see Steemit or a similar cryptocurrency available as a way of supporting authors and creators.)
Congrats on the milestone!
