My Morning Routine That Makes Me 10x More Productive

in steem •  7 years ago

Hey everyone, I've gotten a few questions related to morning routine lately, so I decided to share mine with all of you. Much of my routine is inspired by Tim Ferriss, whom you've probably heard of.

Tim Ferriss is the king of morning routines and has recently become an even greater advocate of having a good routine to start the day. He's also been referring to morning routines as a "bootup sequence" that world-class performers use to make every day productive towards their ambitious goals.

As Tim would say, "without further adieu" here's my routine:

  1. It actually starts the night before. I don't use any electronics within 1 hour of going to bed and I also put my phone on airplane mode, you'll find out why I do that below.
  2. Wake Up and immediately get out of bed. I do some push-ups, standing squats, burpees, etc. to get the blood flowing. A lot of people tend to lay in bed for a few minutes or even hours after waking up - I used to be one of these people, but this is the first hurdle you must get over each morning.
  3. After my little exercise routine, I brush my teeth and make a pot of tea before sitting down for my daily meditation session. Note: The reason I put my phone on airplane mode the day before is to avoid any unwanted distractions and messages. I found that if I even read 1 message that needs attention, it'll throw off my routine and can disrupt my meditation. Therefore, I leave my phone on airplane mode until I'm done with this entire routine.
  4. After my 20 minute meditation, I open a book (or use the Kindle app on my iPad), and read for 1-3 hours.
  5. This is where some variance comes into the routine... While reading, I tend to have uncontrollable sparks of inspiration and have to write them down. I use the Evernote app to manage all my notebooks and have been doing this for the last 4 years. Needless to say, I have quite a few notes (the last time I checked, I was sitting just above 5,000 notes). So when I say reading for 1-3 hours... that's actual reading time (excluding the time I'm writing).
  6. I am human and thus, I have to take some time to cook a meal and eat. I love food, but it completely destroys my productivity for the day... I try to put off my first meal as long as possible and usually eat around 4 P.M. and this is also when I'll take my phone off airplane mode and re-enter the world.

Well, there you have it, that's my daily routine... It usually takes me about an hour to cook that first meal and eat, but after that I'm usually answering questions, talking to family/friends, etc.. I typically won't write for the rest of the day, unless some idea randomly comes to mind. I'll spend the rest of the day socializing and then going to the gym for a few hours.

My next post will be a little intro piece about myself... Many of you have commented and asked who I am, what I do, etc. As a preview: I'm 20 years old and I dropped out of college last year to trade Options contracts (on the stock market) and cryptocurrencies full-time. I love to read/write and have an insatiable curiosity about the world and beyond. My goal in life and on steem is to share my knowledge and passion for learning with the world and hopefully inspire a few other people to be curious and take their education into their own hands.

Awesome. You must be disciplined in many ways to follow this routine. It is not just a matter of denying the physical desires but it is a quest for wisdom and well being. You are a truth seeker. I can see that your writing is inspired by your reading. Still you have a lot ahead of you. I hope the best for you. Stay healthy. I think the best thing you did was turn off electronics one hour before bed. Keep it up!!

Love,

Yes, the discipline is something I've had to work on over the past few years, but I'm getting better! Thank you so much for your kind words! I hope to hear more from you!

I like that morning routine. It would do me the world of good to jump out of bed and do some exercises, as I do tend to like my bed a little too much, especially in the cold winter mornings. I did quite well this morning though and actually got out of bed half an hour earlier than usual. So tomorrow, when the alarm goes off, that's it I'm ready. If I do that I may be even able to fit in a little meditation to start the day too. Awesome, thank you for inspiring me.

Great work! I'd love to hear how that works out for you/if it helps you get more done with your day! Thanks stopping by and sharing your kind words ❤️

Hi fret!

I envy you. I work at night and I basically have less sleep than most people.

Are you doing intermittent fasting? Would love to know more about your morning tips and etc. ^^

Hey! Yeah, I am doing intermittent fasting. I'm currently on an 18/6 plan right now (18-hour fast, 6-hour eating window). I highly recommend people to try IF, I find my focus to be incredibly sharper and my productivity is through the roof because I can just concentrate on working rather than cooking and eating. I'll write about my current IF regime in detail and then post it soon, thanks for the support!

Yes. I did that for two weeks. Then went back again. I'd like to do that again. Best that I get tips from you. Excited to read more. It's hihgly recommended these days.

Wow, that was very interesting to read about your Routine. Impressive how you can continue it every single day. My job doesn't allow any routine, every new day is a surprise, some times is good, sometimes bad. If I wake up in the morning and start the day with a bad message, the day is gone already ;-( thanks for sharing your story. We wish you a nice day. Greetings from Thailand

Thank you for your kind words! Yes, I understand the struggle of not being able to have a routine because of work. Like you said, sometimes that's a good thing and sometimes its a bad thing. I'm very jealous! Thailand is a place I really want to visit!

Gooooood morning ;-) Originally i am from Germany, but i am living in Thailand now for 11 years already. Found my wife here and now we having 3 beautiful children together. Thats what makes me feel good everyday, coming home from work and seeing all of them. Have a nice Saturday. Greetings from Phuket

Wow! Thanks for putting this out to all of us... This really resonated with me: "Wake Up and immediately get out of bed. I do some push-ups, standing squats, burpees, etc. to get the blood flowing. A lot of people tend to lay in bed for a few minutes or even hours after waking up - I used to be one of these people, but this is the first hurdle you must get over each morning."

I also used to be incredibly slow at getting out of bed, but I made a habit of just jumping right up and getting to work, it really does make a difference!

I'm still the laying in bed person, I'll have to try my best to jump out of bed next time. Nice write up !

Thanks! I appreciate your support! Let me know if it works for you!!

Anytime, my friend, I'm glad you found value in this post! If you try any of the other parts of my routine, please let me know how they go for you!

Will do!

I have no routine at all.But reading your inspired routine i think i also need maintain some routine thanks for inspire me

Anytime my friend! Let me know how it goes for you and if you try any of the routines I laid out above!

I can't believe I missed this post until now! Excellent boot up sequence. I have read be several health gurus that positive routine is the key to wellness and longevity. You have great discipline! I have a similar routine. I can't tell you how many chin ups I have done in the last year, but I love them.

Putting your phone in airplane mode is probably healthy from a radiation perspective too.

May you have many morning reboots and micro fasts!
