What are Diatoms? Algae Under The Microscope: Limnology

in steem •  6 years ago

This is a video recording of freshwater algae.
One of the most interesting organisms we can find in water samples is diatoms.
Diatoms are a one-celled organism that lives around the planet, in salt water, fresh water, and moist soil.
They often link to each other and can create colonies of organisms.

They are built with a transparent silicone dioxide wall that makes it possible for them to absorb sunlight. Through photosynthesis, they actually produce over 20% of the earth's oxygen! Some say this number is up to 40% of the earth's oxygen.
In addition to this, they are also a big and important food supply for many different animals.

Fossil evidence has suggested that diatoms have been around since before the early Jurassic age.
Over 100,000 species of diatoms have been discovered and new types are found every year.
