I just wanted to share thoughts and hopefully get some feedback from the community regarding American Silver Eagles and their place in your stack.

When I first started stacking, I almost exclusively went with ASE. They are a coin I still like, but haven't purchased in some time. I will try to outline my pros and cons below:

Pros:

  • ASE is probably the world's most recognized silver coin. If SHTF I think this will be a go-to coin, as it's trusted and recognized by many people.

  • The coin itself is beautiful

  • Premiums are reasonable

Cons:

  • While I noted above that it is a beautiful coin, and it is, the coin itself essentially stays the same design year-after-year, except for the date. For me this becomes a bit tiresome, which is partially why I'm drawn to other government coins, such as the Lunar series, that are updated yearly.

  • Because the designs stay pretty consistent, their values may not go up as much over the years beyond the spot price of silver. I know there are exceptions to this, such as the 1996 coin.

  • While the premiums, depending on where you buy, are typically responsible, do these premiums outweigh being able to buy more silver? For example, buying a generic round that has lower premiums allow you to buy more silver.

Does the stacker community have any input on the ASE?

I like ASEs for all the reasons you mentioned. But because I started out as a coin collector before I became a weight stacker, I appreciate a multitude of other coins (mostly for their aesthetic beauty).

That said, I do try to stick to standard weight coins like Canadian, Australian, Chinese, Perth Mint, etc. I try to stay away from odd sized coins and sterling silver in favor of .999 & .9999.

The one exception is American "junk" silver. I like to stack ones as close to 1964 as I can.

That's a lot of exceptions, but what the heck, I love to stack!

I agree with the "premiums' dilemma" What's better: one 1996 or four to five 2017s, at same price? "That hole in the album must be filled", one might argue. I have found, that premiums, on Generics, rarely go up. But the premium, on a numismatic, can spike to more than spot.

Also, I have heard "experts" say, if silver, today, dropped to $8, the premium would go to $8, because no one would sell, at such a low price.

I'm a huge fan of ASE myself as well for all the reasons you listed. A close second favorite for me though is the Canadian Maple Leaf, I just love the way it looks, and the style has been mostly the same for a long while now. Often I can get a little better deal on them than ASE too.

Thanks for sharing!

It will surely be the last standing money standing when the U.S. falls. You will forget about the premium that day.
