Is There A Case For A Private Steem Wallet?

in steem •  7 years ago  (edited)

I think this is a really constructive post @rawdawg.

The answers to a lot of your questions are going to depend on the individual users.

Personally, I like the idea of everything being very transparent. I know a lot of people disagree but it is a good way for the platform to be more self-regulating. You can see how influential other Steemians are by looking at their Steem power.

Let me try and answer my opinion on all of your questions.

Would you feel comfortable posting your bank balance online for anyone to see with internet access?

I view the Steem wallet as being different from a bank account. It is showing my investment in the platform along with the income I have generated from the platform specifically.

If one day, you have a large Steem balance and you are not operating anonymously on Steem, will you feel regret because anyone can have access to your balance?

I will have to see when/if I get there. However, the transparency, in my opinion, is one of the best parts about this platform

If you didn't realize that your balance is available to anyone outside of Steem, just as it is available to those within the Steem community, does it make you have different feelings regarding if you should or shouldn't be anonymous? In other words, does it make you feel uncomfortable?

I knew before joining that all wallets and their balances were public.

Does the wallet being public provide any benefit to Steem users?

I think of Steem as a business and by writing/commenting I am participating in the business. The wallet balance is like the 'shares' I hold and the influence I have in which posts generate income. Being able to see which 'investors' are more influential is good for users as it allows them to write quality content that the 'investors' will like.

Are there any other crypto tokens with public wallets?

This one I am not sure about. I haven't been able to find any though

Should the wallet stay public or should Steem users have an option to turn a privacy feature on?

I would like to see the option for people to make their Steem Dollars private but I think Steem Power should remain public at all times.

Would interactions become more authentic without Steem users bank balance available to anyone/everyone?

I don't think that it would change how authentic the posts are. I, so far, am really enjoying the posts people are making and the effort they are putting into them.

Is there something I am totally missing that makes this whole post nonsense? Is there a specific reason why there can be no wallet privacy inside and outside of Steem?

This post is far from nonsense I think it's important for people to question these things. Wallet privacy was probably something that the developers of Steem thought about but decided against as they seem to be striving for a very transparent platform.

Anyway, that is just my opinion on the subject. Again I think that posts like these are important. Not just praising Steem and not just putting it down. Very consructive questions!
