Yesterday, I wrote my first introduction post on Steemit
https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@liudasbutkus/a-quick-introduction-and-my-thoughts-about-steemit
The results are quite amazing, 5 upvotes, 15 views, and 15 comments. Not miracles, but considering I don't have Steem Power invested and I can't considerably boost my posts it's quite good.
Though after receiving my first few comments I realized, that it's all spam.
Take a look:
The first comment is just a friendly welcoming comment, but without mentioning zero details from my post. He is probably just posting the same comment on every single introduction post. Also, you can see he has 13 votes, probably he is in some sort of upvoting group where they automatically upvote everything they post.
So, a spam comment is just sitting there at the top.
The second one I would consider spam as well, zero mention of anything in my article and a bunch of links that he wanted to self-promote.
Another welcoming comment to promote his stuff.
And the second one again is self-promotion.
Ohh look at that, globalfoodbook commented again basically the same message, but with a different arrow.
Guess what I can do about this spam?
I can hide it for myself which is super useful or I can downvote it, which I did, but the comment is still there, just that it's sitting there at the bottom.
So, basically, 70% of comments that I received was spam. So, much for the great community. And there's no way to get rid of it. I think Google will really love ranking these posts with a trail of spam that can't be deleted.
I did a little more digging on some bigger players posts and the situation is better there, but there's still a lot of random comments.
You can't really blame the people for this because they are incentivised to do this. This is a huge flaw I see in Steemit and if this won't get solved, then Steem will fail.
I don't think steem will fail; this is not a make or break problem, and I believe steemit will solve this problem to some capacity eventually anyway. Remember this site's barely a year old!

Well, it can definitely be a huge problem. More spam lower website rankings, less traffic, no traction, no revenue, etc.

SO slows and hinders mainstream adoption. but we're still a major success :)
Creator Daniel Larima ( @dantheman ) is now working on EOS the even bigger umbrella that can encompass multiple platforms (like steemit), wow super exciting!
