Reddit starts a ban campaign. // There might be an opportunity in there somewhere

For a few weeks now i have been getting notifications from a few subreddits that discuss Reddit bans, Reddit dying, comment deletion and all sorts of things, so i was curious as to see what exactly was going on.

With communities coming to Steem in a few months there might be a potential opportunity for Steem in these bans.
Always use your competition failures and weaknesses to your advantage.

Apparently what has been happening is Reddit taking a harsh stance on what online abuse is. They changed their anti-harrasment rules... Heres a quote by a mod:

Reddit previously defined harassment as “systematic and/or continued” behavior that made people fear for their “real life” safety. Now, Reddit proscribes “anything that works to shut someone out of the conversation through intimidation or abuse, online or off.” That includes “menacing someone, directing abuse at a person or group, following them around the site, encouraging others to do any of these actions, or otherwise behaving in a way that would discourage a reasonable person from participating on Reddit.”

Alright... Sure, i can see why they decided to go with this. People can be dicks. But can you really deal with that kind of "abuse"? Dont you have "blocking" or "muting"? Cant the person annoying you online just make another account?
All this seems to do is restrict freedoms that used to be present before. Anything can be interpreted as offensive, anything can be seen as "abuse".

I never understood why being offensive was bad? Why being offensive is wrong, is seen as harassment or abuse?
How the fuck does constricting your rhetoric only to what the other side "wont mind" hearing lead to any kind of engaging conversation?!

Anyways... You cannot police the interactions between people, what you need to do is give them tools to deal it themselves.
Freedom of expression is important, Reddit can decide not to provide it but that could hurt them. It wont hurt them a lot but it might just enough for a small part of their user base to look elsewhere.
Why not target those?
