In this article, we'll be exploring (stalking) the STEEM blockchain for the most interesting transactions, delegations, currency holdings, and more!
We'll find out who the most rich users, the most influential bloggers, and the most popular witnesses are in the Steem Community. Let's get started!
Stalking the Witnesses
First, let's start out by gathering some data about the various witness who help operate and protect our beloved blockchain. Below is a graph of the top 50 STEEM Witnesses and their vote distributions.
The dark leather-blue seen at the leftmost bar of @jesta and @timcliff is user @freedom. This user holds over 7 million Steem Power and has likely the most power on the blockchain itself. However, almost all of @freedom's Steem Power is delegated to various accounts.
Another interesting fact is that the light baby blue seen at the rightmost bar of every witness above is Smaller Voters, a bulk category for all voters with power less than the largest ones.
The thing to notice is that consistently for the top witnesses this category is the largest one. This shows that, for witnesses, attracting the votes of even minnows and smaller users matters as these can add up.
Additionally, users should not feel that they can only vote for the top 50 witnesses, as there are plenty more below that ranking who do a lot for the community. @reggaemuffin, @themarkymark, @arcange, @fubar-bdhr, and many more smaller witnesses come to mind. Below is a graph of the vote distribution for the next fifty witnesses, where we can see that similar patterns hold.
Exploring Delegations
Now, let's get into the world of STEEM Delegations! Delegating Steem Power allows another user to use your SP's vote worth when they vote.
To the right is a list of the biggest delegators on the blockchain. These are accounts and users who have delegated the most Steem Power to other users for various purposes.
Not so surprisingly, the top user on this list is the aptly-named @misterdelegation! Like @freedom (the second largest delegator), @misterdelegation holds 7 million Steem Power with over 4 million delegated out.
For such large stakeholders in Steem, @freedom and @misterdelegation are quiet and inactive accounts with no posts to show for it.
In the former case, @freedom mostly delegates to services who give payouts for delegation. Both @minnowbooster and @buildawhale are bots who reward delegation in recurring payouts, while @utopian-io rewards delegation in the form of shares as well.
The Most Influential Steemians
In this last and final stalking adventure exploration, we'll find out who the most influential and largest Steemians are in many categories.
First up, the Steemians with the largest net worth or account value. Below is a list of the top 10 most valuable Steemians:
It's not so surprising that Steemit Inc's account @steemit holds the largest amount of Steem Power (SP) and is the most valuable account on the blockchain. @poloniex and @bittrex are up next with @blocktrades not too far behind; these are the largest exchanges allowing conversions/trading with STEEM and SBD.
Thankfully, the only whale on this list currently powering down is @dan, due to Dan's recent departure from Steemit. The others are safely holding onto their Steem Power as shown.
And for our final chart, we'll look at the most reputable accounts (the users with the highest reputation):
From this list, we see that the most reputable account is @steemsports, a project launched by @thecryptodrive, holding an unimaginable 78
on the reputation scale (and almost halfway to 79
)! Interestingly, @steemsports also has the second-lowest account value on the list, likely due to powering down.
@steemcleaners, an account dedicated to fighting spam, plagiarism, and abuse on the blockchain is also incredibly high at over 75
. Reputation is logarithmic; this just means that it's about ten times harder to go from one reputation to the next. For example, it's ten times harder to get from 58
to 59
compared to getting from 57
to 58
, though I am still persevering in this journey! 😜
Conclusions!
There exist many tools to help you stalk explore the intricacies of the blockchain, with the two I used being SteemReports and SteemWhales.
Through exploration, we can quickly figure out details and patterns in voting, delegation, and transactions and we can uncover interesting information about the most superlative users on STEEM. Thanks for being on STEEM!
Thanks for reading,

witness: Though I don't run a witness myself, I will give out recommendations on who to vote! My current witness recommendations are @reggaemuffin, @lukestokes.mhth, and @aggroed! 😊
Note: I've been asked on chat about where I got my charts/info (even though it's already in the post :P)
But just to reiterate:
Please note that SteemWhales is down at the moment, unfortunately (as of late November 6th, 2017).
Thanks! @mooncryption

I love this kind of information.. Especially on the Steemit witnesses and the MegaWhales - thanks for your time spent with the infographics, stats, and narration - much appreciated from a minnow - anything is possible if you put the effort in on Steemit

Thanks for the information.
I was not aware that it takes ten times more to go from 57-58. No wonder it is taking me so long to move up in reputation.

The guideline is that it gets harder and harder to move up. When you're a newbie at 25 reputation, all it takes is a few votes to boost you to the 30s or 40s. After that, things get quite harder, and it takes quite a push to move you from one level to the next.

Thank you for the clarification.
That means someone who has a 62 or 63 is way ahead of a 58.
Each level is a drastic jump.

Exactly. Don't get too hung up on reputation once you're in the fifties and above :P
Also I can see you just made the jump to 58! Congrats :)

This is all interesting 'looking' but it doesn't make much sense to me. It's okay though. I'll probably figure it out someday.

It's okay! You can always ask me if something doesn't make sense :) I'm not sure exactly what doesn't make sense to you, so I'll give you a gist of some terms:

Well my "voting weight" is still pretty low (34). I was gone for about a month and didn't have really good access to my account. Mostly though, I'm having a problem figuring out a niche and getting more Whales and Dolphins looking at my posts. At least I think that is the goal I should be shooting for. Maybe when/if I ever get it figured out, I can check more into Delegation.

You're doing really well! I think you're right; you definitely need more outreach from users. Try looking into services like @minnowbooster; they help greatly with getting more interested viewers to look at your post.

Once you make a post, copy the Steemit.com post link, it looks like this:

Then, send 0.01 to 10 SBD to @minnowbooster using your Wallet page. Make sure the memo is the post link you just copied.
In the next 15 minutes, you should get a nice upvote on your post boosting its visibility :)

Bots should not be as powerful on the platform as they are. This has led to a lot of inorganic content being pushed around. If steemit wants to be a social media platform, better content has to be upvoted than what we are seeing now

Many bots help users get more attention and visibility such as @minnowbooster.
As for "inorganic", all of your posts are quoted word-for-word from CoinDesk.com; I appreciate that you put in the source link, but don't expect many votes when you simply copy paste an article from somewhere else.

See thats the problem, if you look at what I have posted there are two kinds of posts. One of them are word for word quotes from coindesk and the other are articles that I actually have taken the time to write. The ones that are direct quotes from coindesk have about 5 times as many upvotes as the ones that I have taken the time to write. This is bizarre why should copied content have more upvotes than something that I have actually taken the time to write. What happens is that it incentivizes people to post 'inorganic' content because that is simply what will get upvotes. It is definetly a problem that needs to be addressed

@mooncryption - some interesting data and analysis in this post. Have you considered also posting under #bisteemit or #statistics where there would be a few people interested in this information? I happen to also have voted for lukestokes and aggroed as witnesses as well :)
