I don't know about you but Steem has become really quiet over recent months. Granted it is nowhere near as estalished as the big social media giants yet, and we are still in beta - lots of confusion for newcomers, a steep learning curve and (maybe most importantly) a bear market.
That's right, whereas this place seemed to be buzzing with activity not a year ago I find the level of interaction between people has dropped significantly, many of the people on here that I dug so much have stopped being active altogether and it seems there are a small group of individuals who just keep on posting and interacting despite any market conditions while the vast majority of people on Steem have ceased to interact with the blockcahin.
Now there are tools to analyze this of course, but I merely want to share my impression. I also don't exclude myself from this, I have been posting less frequently lately, focussing more on longterm projects, my music and the challenges coming up in my life. and maybe it's the same for all those I dearly miss.
Still, the correlation of dropping prices and the level of interaction on Steem made me curious. It made me wonder about why we are here to begin with and whatever happened to "come for the rewards, stay for the community"... Where we had incredible prices and potential rewards a year ago, Steem is now in the lower double digit cent value in terms of dollars and I can't shake the feeling that there is a strong correlation to dropping user activity.
It's funny really, because facebook still seems to be far from dead even though there were never any rewards promised for signing up, nor is there such a supportive community like there is on Steem (except for some special fb group pages I guess).
Steem on the other hand started off with offering people rewards for their work, which is not a bad thing in itself...
However I do get reminded of a talk by Alfie Kohn that I have always found fascinating, especially where he talks about the mechanism of "buying off intrinsic motivation". You know, the rewards that the writing itself can give people - learning, self-reflection, connecting to likeminded people - everything that any regular old social media network does.
I made an excerpt of Alfie's lecture where he tells this funny little anecdote about how monetary rewards can overshadow and void intrinsic motivation and ultimately change people's original intent and behavior by offering lower and lower monetary compensation for what they originally would have done for free as they pursued the activity for its own sake before money came into the equation. Come check it out ;)
It seems to me this is rather spot-on considering the perceived correlations between dropping prices and activity on steem.
If you want to listen to Alfie's full lecture you can do so here:
I have also written an article about this talk in the past which you can read here
What do you think? Does this explain why there is so little going on here lately and why there might be massive interest in Steem again once the next bullrun starts?

You nailed it!🙏🏻🌟🔮
Intrinsic motivation is everything!
Doing something because the sole act of doing it provides you joy is the way to go! When we do things for external rewards, sooner or later, we will find ourselves hitting a wall.
I love how you put it though! You’re an epic writer and you presented this so well. Keep it up shawty!😘

Spot on! Steemit is like the old man in Alfie's story. What an awesome metaphor. Sounds like the solution to bullying and perhaps even war. What if wars made less and less money? Let's be honest, they just cost money. Let's not even go into this.
I can't help but thinking - lately - that I should spend more and more time on creating and less on monetizing/ marketing/ selling my creativity.
What if we could do that with everything? Slowly but steadily take money out of the equation. It surely tells us what really matters to us.
Let's go back to the stone age/ island life where everyone is focusing on what they're good at and or like to do, the things that are actually necessary to survive and possibly thrive :>)
Here's a big hug and loads of positive energy from me to you

Aw, my lovely Vincent. I feel the same lately, leaving it to the universe to find ways to bring abundance to me instead of trying to achieve it all with fervor through the mind and rational thinking. I feel more and more I need to trust in the totality of things in order to continue on my path, instead of clinging to things I think may work when they seem to get me deeper and deeper into a deadlock kinda situation.
I really can't wait for that perma oasis to flourish and put only the bare minimum of focus on system mechanics. guess the goal is clear, let the universe do the rest, I trust it fully <3
much love to you my friend!

Amazing write-up and the great issue being discussed!
I honestly haven't experienced any sort of engagement on steemit in a very long time shame to see the current state of the community kinda dead most replies I receive are from bots that I delegated SP to so I get upvotes in return to my content creations, It's been a blessing being around Steem when things were "Mooning" and community was so much more alive hopefully this will come around again as most people are motivated by $$ and gains but again the ones who are left are the "creme de la creme"... Kudos!

Hey Lethalskillz,
thanks for stopping by man <3 I agree, but then I can really say things are looking up here lately, it feels like steem is moving forward once more and I think people will be back (maybe for the wrong reasons when we moon again haha, but back nonetheless).
It feels like there is a new wind blowing lately and I'm happy to say I'm happy I stuck with steem through the times of little activity. Just like you have.
All the best to ya!

Steam also lacks the addictive qualities that are designed into FB, Twitter, etc. Those sites purposefully put in addictive qualities because addiction is a better motivator than a few bucks.
