"Promoted" is the way to go! I wish I had the exact "hard" numbers behind promotion. I think I want to try vote-bots so I can at least call out the rip-offs. I am generally against, but it seems like such a hot topic on steemit, I think I should pipe in even if only to say "no."

Have you looked at Steem Bot Tracker? I use buildawhale and sneaky ninja once in a while but I also look to see what higher reputation people use..can say a lot!!
