Ah how I love the steem community – Or do I ???

in steem •  6 years ago

The last 6 months have been a struggle for me here on steem.  When I joined,  we had not fully reached the boom so I have been here for the good and the bad.  As things began to take a downturn, I stayed. I continued to support the community, to support authors and creators and to support the ecosystem.

Steem is still very young.  The ecosystem needs time to mature.  And Cryptocurrency needs adoption.  I am not frustrated with steem, but the community! Actually, I'm not frustrated with the community, I am frustrated with myself for the choices I made.  With all the community effort I put in, well I guess I was expecting too much when I thought the same people would eventually support my project when I launched it.  That never happened, yet I continue to run a community league at a  loss.  Foolish me huh!

I hear people give out that no one supports them and here I am doing the same.  But I get it. I understand why.  These people once did support the community, but when they launched their own project, they needed their SP and their time to make it work.   I have powered up my earnings, and I have purchased more SP.  But instead of doing what others have done and stop supporting those not involved and engaged with my project, I made the mistake of continuing to support the general steem community.

Now I am tired, and I also feel sad! Today I start my first power down.  The account I am powering down was used to vote for other community accounts and initiatives that supported the general steem user.  I’m not powering down to cash out but to consolidate my SP so I can support my own project and I feel sad that it must be this way.  Soon, I will be removing the last few delegations too.

I appreciate what you do with the growth leagues as well as the support you've shown me along the way.. I have found some interesting like minded people here but I'm certainly not a part of any community..

I'm not convinced there is any discernible culture or tangible bond that could constitute or support what is known as community. The only commonality we all share is we would appreciate seeing steem as a coin and platform for expression succeed.. Nobody has any idea how to galvanize these endeavors and I think the harsh reality is that success exists outside of our inner sanctum. Getting this infantile experiment beyond our current confines seems a long way off... Less than a quarter steem is definitely not instilling much confidence but it also makes it silly to quit at this point so I think like many others I'm cautiously optimistic and not void of hope, yet..

Best wishes on your project, I'm not sure what it is and I'm pretty active so perhaps you need to publicize your vision. It's possible it's getting lost in the abundance of muck..

Dear @skramatters

but I'm certainly not a part of any community..

Lone wolf? :)

Most definitely, I'm not opposed to hunting with others every now and again but eventually I will take my own path..

Aw... yeah, that can't feel very good. I know how you feel, hon. I have this little motto that I picked up along the way that helps me through this kind of thing. Maybe it'll help you, too. It goes something like this: when you've got a not-so great situation going on and you start losing hope that it'll get better, try to imagine it as a bad T.V. show when you've lost the remote. Just hang out a while and it'll change on its own eventually. For those of us who are devoted to the Steem blockchain, you're a shining star even if you're feeling a little tarnished. Things will get better one way or another.

Thank you for the delegation and the kindness you have showed me.

I know my random upvotes, comments, retweets and comments on Reddit where not much. I hope you find some support and are able to take things to the next level.

Running a project is tough with the sheer volume out there. Which is why I left or gave up on curating and running a community I was involved with a number of months ago. 60 hours or more a week was not enough to feel like I was making a difference or do much. Everything is so time consuming with an endless amount of people expecting more and more out of someone is frustrating.

I hope this means you are finally going pull the delegation from me (I have asked before!) if you have not already and will put it to better use. Sometimes you just got do what is best for yourself first.

So many seem to be running off and starting a scot tribe these days. I wonder what is going happen to most of them when the new feeling wears off and 6 months from now many are still exactly where they started.

I am sorry that you feel that way. I have so much going on here that I just don't keep up with other projects. There are also just so many things going on with the top end of this system right now. I have enjoyed being part of the growth leagues you run and am sorry that you take a loss in those. I do hope that this can get better for you. I have a lot of hope that those new things going on will lead to a stronger steem.

"I have so much going on here that I just don't keep up with other projects."

Same story with everyone. To many tiny islands with no population.

Yup, my island is pretty small all @contestkings and @steemmonsters so I lose track of the other stuff.

I believe we joined around the same time. I've always loved your energy and devotion to the red fish. One thing I've learned is do your own thing and try to turn Steem into the blockchain of you. (I am having limited success.) these bear times for me are more about making foundations. Hopefully when things pick up they can be built on to amazing heights.

Sorry to hear you feel this way Paula, but I sort of know how you feel. I've seen your delegation being abused and used to self vote more than vote the cause it was intended for, and that is just quite despicable. Personally, I feel having control over your own SP and project is the best way to ensure it achieves what you want to achieve. Good luck and I;m sure things will get better.

dang that is sad....

i don't know what to say..
hope you success wit everything you do.

i felt similar. @threespeak gave me new hope in the steem ecosystem.

well, I guess it's transition time... not much can be said about the old model working, that's for sure. things evolve

Yes, I think a lot of us felt the 'humpf' of too many shiny objects. Around the May time frame I was without access for a month and it put into perspective all the different things I had on the go...I've also had to pull back to focus on projects closer to me. Best wishes and keep us posted on your projects!

It is nice to know that you are not going anywhere, just consolidating a little bit, and I would guess like a few of us wondering what direction Steem Block Chain is going to take. All the new various small Scot-Tribes, and the possibility of SMT and SMT-Communities, things are becoming more and more diluted here on the Steem Block Chain.

The communities are a sort of blessing and a curse. I like how they have made content discovery sort of easier in that I view the Scot-Communities as magazines, what is missing though is the Publishers Clearing House of Steem Block Chain, so I can find that niche/specialty magazine easily.

I do not know what it is like in other parts of the world outside of my two small communities. The grocery stores used to have almost an entire aisle on one side for books and mostly magazines. Now just one small section shared by the books and magazines, maybe three shelves for the magazines and 5 shelves for the books at most.

Publisher's Clearing House was pretty much the only good Junk/Spam mail ever to arrive in the mail box. Not for the You Could Win.... dollar amount, but for all the magazines, there were hundreds to thousands to look at the names of. It has been for ever since I saw or received one of those You Could Be our... junk mails, I think a lot of magazines have gone the way of the dodo. That is the possible curse that the tribes/communities will face when people can no longer keep up and find those niche compartments.

I hope your next project can get a continuing support stream of users and that it is visible for the ordinary web/content/block chain surfers like myself. Visibility is a very important part of steem, and the Block Chain does not make it easy to get that visibility.

You have done so much to support the community, but I can appreciate it can be frustrating. Take a break if you need it. It looks like HF21 is coming next month and that may change things up a bit. I am hoping they will deliver communities fairly soon so we can get more social. See you around.

In theory it should be that contests and other community building initiatives should finance themselves through people who participate. And it would work if the price of Steem would be higher. In reality it's not the case. Most of the people who participate have very little SP and need support themselves. So if you are using your own earnings to support your initiative, it's not surprising at all. My experience with 2 contests I run is the same. Stay strong! The darkest hour is before the dawn (unless it's a solar eclipse...)

If i were you i would follow the other commenters advice and just have a break, i had about 6 months off and now I'm pleased to be back and i'm excited about steemit and steem once again,
I hope it all goes well for you.

Lots of changes happening here right now. Good for you making the changes that you feel you need to make. You do so many good things for so many Steemians... Always take time to take care of yourself, too.

It's a ride awakening when you expect others to act and feel as kind, generous and selfless as you are, but all they do is disappoint. I'm sorry it has to be this way 😞❤️

Dear @paulag

I've just read latest post by @abh12345 and I've learned that you had to make a difficult decision regarding @steemcommunity account and you started powering down.

I'm sorry to hear that your past half year was a struggle for you. It must be very exchausting to feel that way.

With all the community effort I put in, well I guess I was expecting too much when I thought the same people would eventually support my project when I launched it.

The problem is lack of visibility on Steemit. i believe that many people would support your project if they would know more about it. I surely would try to help if I would know that you need it. It's a bit hard to give someone a hand if we don't see that someone out there does require support.

Take a break, rest and perhaps come back again one day. Being tired is very close to being burned out, and I hope you won't ever feel that way.

Yours
Piotr

I have to disagree, the problem is not lack of visibility, the problem is that the content is not suited to the limited steem audience. There is no point in using promotional tools for more visibility when the content is not what people want. That would only achieve a high bounce rate and bad quality traffic. I get visibility, over 12k visitors this month and I am sending new users to steem daily. I use steempress to connect my wordpress blog so I have my stats. People do know about my project, it's just not up their ally.

Dear @paulag

Obviously I'm grateful for your comment. We may see those problems differently and whoever I spoke to about biggest problems on Steemit - most of them pointed out that lack of engagement (caused by lack of visibility) is what puts them off.

Let's give you an example: there has been so many authors out there who may sometimes have 2-3 comments (or sometimes zero). And few times we did some test (promoting publication by sending memo with link to all followers).

(that post in the middle was "boosted")

Results in our opinion proved that lack of engagement is caused by the fact, that people cannot find your publication their feeds (lack of visibility).

I get visibility, over 12k visitors this month and I am sending new users to steem daily

It's surely great result. You're surely doing great on Steemit.

Yours
Piotr

Sorry to hear of how hard it is for you @paulag. You are well known and respected even among newcomers here on steemit. Your service attitude to uplift others is noble and full of empathy. Like children when they leave home and don't bother to think of the mother they leave behind who selflessly raised them, some folks take wing when their time is right and fly their own path, though we should always remember and respect our teachers, for we are standing on the shoulders of the giants who carved the path before us.
